For the
Princeton or any
offense.

“If a player cannot

pass the ball, the
offense stops moving.
If he cannot shoot, he
will always be open.
If he cannot dribble,
the defense will attack
”

20 Principles
12 Principles
Personalize the Princeton
20
Optional
Phasing
Principle
1.
If you can pass, dribble and
shoot well, you will always
dictate to the defense
what they do.
If you can’t, then you
are not fundamentally sound,
and the defense
will dictate what you do.
21
You must be able to dribble,
pass and shoot, screen and
cut, on the move under
pressure.
The quality of your passing
determines the quality of
your shots!
Optional
Phasing
Principle
2.
You must dribble with a
purpose and the other 4
players must read the
dribbler.
22
Optional
Phasing
Principle
3.
3.
Think change of direction -think 5 players high.
Five players must work
together.
23
There is a counter for
everything the defense does.
Do the opposite of what the
defense is doing.
You must read the defense.
Are they playing hard or soft?
Optional
Phasing
Principle
4.
If there’s any denial, cut
backdoor.
24
Optional
Phasing
Principle
5.
Think lay-ups and
3-point shots.
In that order.
25
Optional
Phasing
Principle
Don’t run to the ball!
6.
26
Optional
Phasing
Principle
7.
Hit the cutter with a
bounce pass.
It is ok to use
one-hand passes.
7.
The offense is about
hypnotic cuts, passes
and handoffs.
Timing & cutting are essential
to establishing this flow.
Flow brings success.
27
Optional
Phasing
Principle
Keep your center high.
Keep the area below
the foul line empty.
8.
28
Optional
Phasing
Principle
9.
This offense is more about
cutting than screening.
Move to open spaces.
When you screen,
don’t just screen.
Screen and read
each situation.
29
CUT CREDIBLY.
Look for the ball where
you are coming open,
then get back outside
to the perimeter
as quickly as possible.
Optional
Phasing
Principle
10.
30
STAND JUDICIOUSLY.
Float to an open spot and
occupy your man.
Fingers up and butt down.
Think ball in air, feet in air.
Optional
Phasing
Principle
11.
31
Optional
Phasing
Principle
12.
Five players must
work together.
UNSELFISHNESS
is more important
than brains.
You must couple this
with discipline.
32
Applying the
Principles
33
The Big Picture
1.
The center’s location is the key
to the Princeton.
The center is central.
34
The Big Picture
2.
The Princeton is a series
of phases (plays).
35
The Big Picture
3.
Options for phases are limited
only by your imagination.
