GMD 400 (1.60 m / 5’3’’)
Designed for work on farms with low
horsepower tractors, the GMD 400 uses
many features available on KUHN’s
largest disc mowers. Though a small
mower, the GMD 400 retains the long life
durability and high operational capacity
of KUHN’s larger disc mowers.
GMD 500 (2.00 m / 6’7’’)
GMD 600 - GII (2.40 m / 7’10’’)
GMD 700 GII (2.80 m / 9’2’’)
For operations on mid-size tractors the
GMD 500 gives the operator the productivity needed to match the needs of the
farm operation.
The GMD 600 - GII offers the farmer high
production capability and ease of operation with a power requirement of only
45 horsepower. Placed in the middle
of the range of KUHN disc mowers,
the GMD 600 - GII gives midsize hay
operations greater capacity and efficiency of operation.
For farms with increased production
demands, greater time limitations, and
moderate horsepower, the GMD 700 - GII
offers the best blend of cost, features, and
cutting width. The large cutting width
allows cutting at a rate approaching that
of many disc mower conditioners.
GMD 800 GII (3.11 m / 10’2’’)
Largest of the series, the GMD 800 - GII
disc mower is fitted with 8 discs for
2.40 m (7’11”) wide swaths.

capability
DISC MOWERS GMD 500
The new suspension system provides
built-in capability for mowing terraces
and banks. The operating range is a full
+ or - 35 degrees.
5 Attachment and parking
The new G II suspension system eliminates the need for a parking stand by
locking out the suspension spring with a
parking latch. Once unhooked the mower
is free standing and the 3pt frame
is locked horizontally for fast attachment
the next time the mower is used.
(GMD 600 / 700 / 800 - GII).
4 Even floatation over the
entire cutterbar
A heavier compensating spring ensures
the cutterbar will operate with optimum
ground pressure through a wide range of
terrain and contours.
6 Semi-automatic Belt
Tension
Belts are automatically readjusted during
new belt run-in. They feature easy and
accurate adjustment of belt tension.
And, a KUHN exclusive, proper pulleyto-pulley dimension is maintained
regardless of the load on the belts for
increased belt life. (GMD 600 / 700 /
800 - GII).

Oval shaped disc for
quality mowing :
• Sophisticated disc profile
for positive ejection of
mowed crop also provides protection to the
blade bolts and long life,
• A less power demanding
header thanks to the
optimum crop flow and
reduced rearward force,
Compact streamlined
cutterbar…
New design: Very flat and smooth cutterbar that reduces soil or crop residues
from building up. It features an excellent
crop flow even in very dense crops.
… Perfectly protected!
A stiffener ensures extra rigidity of the
cutterbar gearcase.
• Increased knife overlap
for a cleaner, more even
cut by attaching knives
to a larger diameter disc,
A
• A bent knife cannot
contact a neighbouring
disc.
• Very little risk of a
foreign body getting
jammed between two
discs.
A
Knives
Large steel forgings
KUHN knives are made of high quality
steel and manufactured to very strict
standards! For safety and long life, knives
are attached with specially designed
hardware, not “quick fastening” devices.
The front part of the disc is fitted with
large forged steel cups ensuring a very
efficient protection of the knife attachment
hardware and providing exceptional disc
service life A .
A heavy duty (HD) version for difficult working conditions
In certain countries, a “Heavy Duty” (HD) version of the GMD 400/500/600/700 and
GMD 800 - GII is available for working in particularly difficult conditions. The machines
are equipped with heavier discs and disc guards.
Take a close look at all of the features!
Some disc mowers may look like a KUHN from the outside. However what is on the inside
is more important. KUHN’s design and construction standards ensure a long life and reliable
operation.
The substandard design and construction of an inexpensive machine can lead to expensive
repairs and time loss in the field.

Detailed view of the internal components of the GMD Series 100 & 100 Generation II cutterbars
1 Withstands the highest loads: High capacity bearings-fitted in a one piece sealed housing not subject to distorsion.
2 Protection should an obstacle be struck: The PROTECTADRIVE
®
system is designed to protect the cutterbar gear train and
minimizes downtime risks in full season.
3 Long-term reliability: Large diameter gearwheels in high tensile forged steel with reinforced teeth.
4 Perfect sealing: O-rings used on cutterbar bearing housings for a perfect, leak-free seal.
5 Increased service life:
Disc pinion shaft bearings endure radial forces for longest bearing life. This optimum position
improves the load balance.
6 Minimum wear or distortion risks:
Idler gear fasteners are located in heat treated steels cups. Correct alignment is
ensured without the risk of distortion.
7 Highly wear resistant:
to the disc.
Knife attachment hardware is fully protected. For added safety, heat treated steel cups are welded

1 Minimized downtime
with fast removal disc
bearing stations
Fast and easy removal and installation of
the disc bearing station. For maximum
reliability and minimum down time,
the stations which include the housing,
bearing and pinion shaft are factoryassembled.
2 Protective disc guards and
skid shoes
1. Heat- treated steel skid shoes fitted on
either disc ends ensure contact between
the cutterbar and the soil.
2. Heat-treated disc guards protect the
other discs.
Attached to the front of the bar and to the
rear stiffener, they make replacement a
simple procedure. These heat-treated
parts are important in stony or sandy
soils
3 Deflector shields
Wear blocks fitted between the disc
guards protect the cutterbar. Knives bent
down by contact with an obstacle are
generally prevented from striking the
cutterbar. These shields also protect the
cutterbar from the abrasive effects of soil
and debris moving with the cut crop.
More features for:
Safety, Simplicity & Ease of Operation
For transport, the safety cover
is folded back and the cutterbar is raised to the vertical
position. Transport width is
minimised without restricting
visibility to the rear.
In addition the following functions can be performed from
the tractor seat:
1. Cutterbar raised and lowered from the field transport
position through the use of
only one hydraulic control
lever.
2. Raising and locking the
cutterbar into road transport
position
3. Unlocking and lowering
the cutterbar from the road
transport position.
8

4 Safety breakaway
mechanism
1
Should an obstacle be encountered, the
safety breakaway allows the mower to
swing slightly rearwards, significantly
reducing the impact load on the cutterbar. The device is simply reset by backing
up.
5
A feature exclusive
to Kuhn, one tool for
all adjustments
2
5
One tool, supplied with the mower, will
perform all of the following:
- Adjustment of the floatation spring
- Belt tension adjustment
- Replacement of knives
- Removal of discs
-6Unlocking the safety cover.
Constant hitch height
Once in the field position, the hitch height
doesn’t need to be adjusted. To ensure
the proper hitch height and floatation
adjustment, a heavy-duty check chain is
supplied as standard equipment.

Standard and Optional Features
for Swath formation.
99
High quality, clean, hay
and forage is the key to
getting the productivity
desired from a herd. KUHN
offers several standard
and optional features that
allow the swath to be tailored to what best suits
specific operational needs.
Outer swath wheel for perfect
swath formation (standard)
Used as an improvement over a swath
board, the swath wheel is mounted
behind the outer disc cone and functions
to separate the cut crop from the uncut
crop allowing the right tractor wheels to
drive over the ground instead of the
previously cut crop. The advantages of
the swath wheel over a swath board are:
- fits entirely under the curtain
- not touching the ground so damage by
backing or turning is eliminated.
Inner swath wheel for
GMD 600 - GII
(optional equipment)
2nd Inner high cone for
GMD 700 - GII
(optional equipment)
Reduces the swath width on the
GMD 600 - GII to approximately
1.50 m/4’11’’/1.60 m/5’3”wide.
To reduce swath width on these mowers,
the second flat disc is replaced with
a high cone that reduces the swath
width to approximately 1.70 m/5’7” 1.80 m/5’11”
10
For outstanding tractor/
mower adaptation
Inner swath wheel for
GMD 700 - GII
(optional equipment)
Used in conjunction with the 2nd high
cone, the inner swath wheel on the
GMD 700 - GII will reduce the swath to
approximately 1.50 m/4’11’’ wide.
Standard offset capability
To ensure a full width of cut when the
mower is attached to tractors with various
track widths, the GMD 400 & 500 have
an offset range of 172 mm/ 7’’, the
GMD 600, 700 & 800 GII have an offset
range of 105 mm/4’’.
Greater optional offset
capability on the GMD 600, 700
& 800 - GII (optional equipment)
An extended left hitch pin is available
that extends the offset of the GMD 600,
700 & 800 - GII up to 200 mm/8’’ to the
right.
Disc mowers
GMD series 100 / 100 - GII
One goal: Harvest a highly nutritional crop for
maximum quality!
11
Amount of dry matter/hectare and nutritional value per ton of
DM/ha: aim the highest levels!
• Give hay a good place in the feeding operation to save on concentrates,
• For the cheapest and best-balanced base ration, rely on hay
and hay silage. The more the field produces energy, proteins and
minerals, the lesser additives are required.
Aim for highly nutritional hay crop at a lower cost!
Careful mowing to obtain high value hay!
- Mow at the stage adapted to the harvesting method, hay or hay silage,
- Harvest clean high quality hay to improve the intake and energy coverage capacity as well as the digestibility.
- Increase the number of cuttings per year (starting earlier).
Preserve the field
- Its lifetime: if the plant deteriorates itself, temporary pastures/fields must be renewed more rapidly which means additional costs,
- Its quality: if forage varieties are destroyed, lower value forage varieties could settle causing hay silage or hay value to drop.
Bank on hay: give yourself the means with KUHN Disc mowers! The more you demand of your hay crop, the more it will have to be
handled carefully.
6 ways to harvest all the crop’s value and how, by listening to
farmers’ needs, KUHN has improved its equipment
No. 2: A clean, even cut
To prevent leaf loss or damage to plants that risk then being affected by illnesses,
diseases, only forage must be harvested.
KUHN Advantages:
- The disc mower bevelled knives ensure a high quality clean, even cut,
- The oval-shaped discs, and compact and streamlined profile of the cutterbar reduces
soil and crop residue accumulation.
No. 1: Mowing at a cutting
height of 5 to 7 cm
1st reason: Less impurity is moved into
the crop, not only when mowing but also
during the whole forage harvesting
operations, tedding and raking.
2nd reason: increased high-value
forage varieties. The crop yield is
reduced if cut to close to the ground,
which allows undesirable weeds and
plants to grow.
3rd reason: increased crop yield and
productivity; by taking care of new buds
which will form the plant and build up its
reserves; by preserving the tillering base
which composes the sugar reserves of the
plant and the new buds.
An intensively worked crop is more
sensitive to accidents and stresses as
plants are not deeply rooted.
KUHN Advantage:
An ideal and constant cutting height is
obtained by simple adjustment of the top
link.
No. 3: Grass must be cut not
chopped!
The crop is quickly ejected into the swath
and is only cut once.
KUHN Advantage:
The crop is quickly ejected into the swath
and is only cut once. On mowers where a
number of discs turn the same way there
is a double-cutting effect on the crop (On
5 and 7 disc machines, only the two inner
discs turn the same way). Double cutting
of the crop causes higher crop losses,
delays regrowth and increases the power
requirement on the tractor.

and reduce hay crop production costs!
No. 4: field conditions

Some conditions are difficult to control:
moles, drought, floods, whereas, grass
stubble destruction can be avoided by
choosing the proper mower. The more the
hay fields are productive, the more they
are sensitive to damage. Therefore give
yourself the tool to preserve them.
Otherwise, deeply rooted plants which
are often undesirable (rumex, dandelions, etc) would develop.
KUHN Advantage: Perfect following of irregular grounds.
With an ideally designed floatation
system KUHN disc mowers reduce the
amount of down pressure required for
uniform mowing. Skid shoe wear and
damage to the cutterbar and grass
stubble is reduced.
Nutritional value in MJ/kg DM.
13
0 1
3
5 7 9 11 13 15 17
Impurity content in % DM.
The best hay will have an impurity level no greater than 3 %
for an average energy level of 6 MJ/kg DM.
No. 5: Mow at the right time
For silage hay even more than for hay,
harvesting at the right stage means
collecting the full value of forage plants:
sugars, proteins, minerals and dry matter.
Therefore, when good weather conditions
and plant stage is ready, it’s time to mow.
You can also postpone mowing
until the afternoon rather than mowing in
the morning when the soil and grass are
still wet.
KUHN Advantages:
- The disc mower floatation that allows
appropriate working speeds,
- The machine’s reliabi-lity - the mower
won’t let you down during mowing
operations,
- Easy swath clearing and headland turn
maneuvering thanks to the single
cylinder operated lift linkage,
- Cutting width adapted to the working
surface.
14
No.6: Swath delivery
Optimum correspondence between a
mower and a tedder for even tedding.
KUHN Advantages:
See page 11 & 12 for a list of the
standard and optional features available
from KUHN that can best customize
a mower for easy tedding by a
GYROTEDDER.
