HTD SERIES DISC MOWERS
GENERAL
HTD7
The HTD7 is a 5 disc, 6’ 8” (2.0 m) cutting width
mower. A tractor with a minimum of 35 hp (26
kW) is required to operate the mower. The
tractor needs to be equipped with an enclosed
cab, to protect the operator.
The mower
attaches to the tractor with a Category I or II
three-point hitch, and requires a single acting
remote valve, for lifting the mower into transport
position.

HTD8
The HTD8 is a 6 disc, 7’ 10” (2.38 m) cutting
width mower. A tractor with a minimum of 40 hp
(30 kW) is required to operate the mower. The
tractor needs to be equipped with an enclosed
cab, to protect the operator.
The mower
attaches to the tractor with a Category II threepoint hitch, and requires a single acting remote
valve, for lifting the mower into transport
position.

HTD9
The HTD9 is a 7 disc, 9’ 2” (2.79 m) cutting
width mower. A tractor with a minimum of 45 hp
(34 kW) is required to operate the mower. The
tractor needs to be equipped with an enclosed
cab, to protect the operator.

attaches to the tractor with a Category II threepoint hitch, and requires a single acting remote
valve, for lifting the mower into transport
position.

CUTTERBED
Easy Cutterbed access
Lifting the front curtain easily accesses the
mower cutterbed. Changing knives and periodic
maintenance can be quickly performed. The
curtain can then just as easily be returned to the
working position.

Modular Bed Design
The cutterbed is designed so that if one cutting
module is damaged internally, it will not
contaminate the other modules. The modular
bed design allows for replacement of the module
rather than disassembling the entire cutterbed,
for ease of maintenance and service.

Segmented Drive Shaft
The segmented shaft allows the cutterbed
modules to be taken apart easily, without
removing a long driveshaft, greatly reducing
repair time. The shaft is a small diameter, to
keep the bed profile low. A low bed profile helps
keep the bed level when cutting, which reduces
“scalloped” cutting and streaking.The hex shaft
is also designed to absorb the shock if an
obstruction is encountered in the field. This
reduces the chance of damage to the more
expensive gears and bearings.

Cutterbed drive
The modular cutterbar system consists of
individual modules and a segmented hex drive
shaft. The segmented hex shaft and pinion
gears drive the cutterbed.
The modular
cutterbar drive requires less horsepower than
competitive designs, so operators can utilize
smaller tractors efficiently.

Sealed Modules
Inside the sealed modules are cut steel bevel
drive gears and sealed bearings.
The
cutterbar’s reversible, hex driveshafts provide
longer life and reduced operating cost. Each
cutterbar module consists of two main pieces,
the sealed gearbox housing, and the oval disc
that retains the knives.

Hillside Mowing
Because each drive unit is sealed with it’s own
supply of lubrication, the mower can operate at
any angle (up to 90 degrees), for long periods of
time. The lubrication stays within each module,
and doesn’t run to one end of the bed.

Knives
The standard knife has a 12 degree pitch. For
tough conditions such as down crop, an 18
degree knife is available. The 18 degree knives
gives more lift to help pick up the crop for a
cleaner cut. This optional 18 degree knife takes
a little more horsepower to operate and is more
subject to damage in abusive conditions.

MAINFRAME
Hitch
All models use a heavy-duty, one-piece tube
hitch design. The larger models, HTD8 and
HTD9, use a wide beam design to accommodate
larger tractors and wider wheel spacings. The
HTD7 offers an optional offset hitch for the larger
tractors with wide wheel tread.
The HTD7 offers a Category 1 & 2 three-point
hitch to fit the smaller model tractors, as well as
the larger ones. The HTD8 and HTD9 are
designed for the larger model tractors, and offer
a category 2 three-point hitch.

PTO Shaft
All units are equipped with a 6-spline, 540-rpm
PTO shaft with an overrunning clutch. The
overrunning clutch is designed to prevent
damage to the cutter bar, PTO shaft, and tractor
PTO clutch when the machine is being shut
down. It allows the cutter bar to coast to a stop
when the PTO is turned off.

Drive Belts
The cutterbar main drive gearbox is driven from
the PTO shaft by belts. The HTD7 has 3
matched “HB” Section belts, the HTD8 has 4
matched “HB” Section belts, and the HTD9 has
a 4-groove power banded belt to drive the
machine. The belts help to reduce the shock
load to the gearbox. The belts can easily be
maintained without removing the belt guard.

Main Drive Gearbox
The heavy-duty main drive gearbox has two
separate oil reservoirs. Both are separate from
the cutterbar modules. The gearbox contains
90W gear oil. The lubrication used in the
cutterbar is heavier EPO grease designed for
lubricating the bevel gears in the cutterbar
module.

Inner Flotation Spring
The inner flotation spring is standard on all
models. It is set at the factory and is nonadjustable. It takes pressure off the inner skid
shoe to increase wear life.

Outer Flotation Spring
Challenger® offers an outer flotation spring as
standard equipment for the models HTD8 and
HTD9. This reduces the wear on the outer skid
shoe giving it a longer wear life. Outer flotation
springs are optional for the HTD7.

Hydraulic Lift Cylinder
The hydraulic lift cylinder is standard on all
models and is used to raise and lower the
cutterbar for transport and storage.

Transport Lock
The transport lock valve is used to hydraulically
lock the cutterbar in the raised position when
transporting, storing or working on the machine.
It stops the cutterbar from lowering if hydraulic
pressure is lost.

Cutterbar Breakaway
The cutterbar breakaway is designed to prevent
damage if the cutterbar hits an object. It gives
the operator time to stop before serious damage
is done. The spring tension is adjustable and if it
is tripped, the operator simply backs up to reset
the breakaway.

Heavy Duty Curtain
All the HTD series disc mowers offer a heavy
curtain as well as a reinforced curtain frame.
This curtain helps to contain material and
reduces the possibility of objects being thrown
toward the tractor.

Swathboard
The Swathboard guides the cut crop away from
the uncut crop. This separates the cut and
uncut crop, making it easier to mow.

Tall Crop Divider
The optional tall crop divider attaches to the
outer end of the disc mower and is used to
separate tall material. The tall crop divider
provides a clean division between the standing
crop and crop being cut. It improves the cutting
performance in tall, tangled crops.

2” Topping Skids (Set of Four)
The 2” (51 mm) high skid shoes provides
additional cutting height for longer stubble. The
high skid shoe is also recommended in rocky
conditions, to protect the cutterbar.

Offset Hitch Bundle for HTD7
The offset hitch moves the mower (HTD7 only) over 12” (305 mm), to allow the use of larger
tires or wider wheel spacing. The offset hitch allows the operator to use the full width of the
cutterbar, and prevent the rear wheel from running over the uncut crop.
