1. Boys and Girls Clubs of West Georgia (Two Locations: LaGrange and Hogansville, GA)
About: Boys & Girls Clubs of West Georgia provide daily afterschool and non-school day programming that seek to instill in
each child the senses of belonging, usefulness, influence, and
competence. Through programming in the areas of academic
success, healthy lifestyles, and good character & citizenship, the
Clubs seek to inspire and enable all young people to realize their
full potential as responsible, productive, and caring citizens.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Helping
students with their homework, leading and participating in fitness
programming, planning and leading specialty classes (music, arts,
writing, newspaper, drama). There could also be an opportunity to
plan and lead man and womanhood classes with preteen boys and
girls.
Note: Each of the two locations will be receiving a group of
students. If you end up serving at the Boys and Girls Club, you will only go to one of the locations,
not both.

2. Park Elementary School (Hamilton, GA)
About: Park Elementary School is located in Hamilton, GA. Their After School Enrichment Program
“offers an inviting learning environment consisting of 3 classrooms, which provide the opportunity to
complete homework assignments as well as additional grade level academic enrichment
activities. Students receive a snack and have the opportunity to visit the gym for exercise as well as
outside recess time (weather permitting).”[4]
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Helping out with the After School Enrichment
Program as well as art classes. There may also be an opportunity to help out with students with special
needs at this site. Additional optional opportunities include assisting school functions such as field days,
dances, etc.

3. Open Door (Columbus, GA)
About: The mission of Open Door is to “empower
impoverished people in their community to realize their full
potential as children of God… They work with children,
women and families to embody Christ and empower those
who need help and hope.” One part of their incarnational
ministry is providing an after school program to children
and teenagers.[3]
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Helping
students (ages 5-12) with homework (reading and math),
planning and leading specialty classes such as sports,
recreation, music, or drama class.

4. First Tee (LaGrange, GA)
About: First Tee is a non-profit organization which utilizes the sport of golf
to influence children ages 8-18. While instructing students in golf, the
organization also teaches skills such as communication and goal setting.

setting up and helping out with golf lessons

5. Good Shepherd Therapeutic Center (Warm Springs, Ga)
About: The 303 acre farm seeks to help troubled teenagers find emotional
and spiritual healing by Christian counseling, participation in community
(including church), and care of a horse. Good Shepherd also offers
equestrian programming for individuals with special needs from children
to seniors.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Working with and care

6. Humane Society of Harris County (Hamilton, GA)
About: Different from “the pound”, the Humane Society cares for
animals while striving to find permanent homes. The clinic also runs
weekly adoptions at various locations on the weekends.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Transporting dogs
for walks/exercise in the park, frequently updating the society’s social
media, training the dogs in simple commands, socializing all animals
(cats, dogs, etc.) in order to combat “institutionalization” from extended
inactivity

7. Jenny Jack Sun Farm (Pine Mountain, GA)
About: Jenny Jack Sun Farm grows a variety of fruits, vegetables,
herbs and flowers on four acres of land in Pine Mountain, GA. Their
farm is also home to pigs and chickens. All of the food they produce
is sold within 30 miles of their farm.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Mulching,
weeding, harvesting, helping prepare for the CSA (Community
Supported Agriculture) by bagging and sorting produce.

8. Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park (Pine Mountain, GA)
About: FDR State Park is Georgia’s largest state park. It includes
campgrounds, cabins and cottages, trails, beautiful scenery and
many other outdoor activities.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: General
maintenance of state park property, outdoor activities such as
raking, cutting grass, cleaning fire rings, repairing/rebuilding a
stairway, painting, washing windows, weed eating, etc.

9. Georgia Initiative of Community Housing (Pine Mountain, GA)
About: The Georgia Initiative of Community Housing (GICH), funded by several partners and sponsors,
“helps communities improve their quality of life...through the development of locally-based housing and
revitalization strategies.” The initiative came to Pine Mountain in 2007 and is operated by the Town of
Pine Mountain.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Driving to various homes in Pine Mountain to survey
damage and needs, working on homes and implementing those needs.

10. Valley Rescue Mission (Columbus, GA)
About: Valley Rescue has several avenues of outreach including shelters (lodging, meals, clothing, and
counsel), thrift stores, and recovery programs (whether from abuse, alcohol, etc.). They have been serving
Christ and sharing His love with the greater Columbus community for over 50 years.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Prep and serve meals, organize food pantries, plan
activities with children at shelter, work at thrift shop

11. FOCUS (Hamilton, GA)
About: “FOCUS is a faith based non profit organization dedicated to
helping the less fortunate and those in need in Harris County, GA.
Their ministries include a thrift shop and food bank, providing
monetary assistance for medical bills and prescriptions, helping with
utility payments, promoting child abuse prevention, and assisting with
home repairs.”[2]
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Helping out in the
thrift store by sorting through donated items, folding clothes and
arranging items in the store.

12. Georgia Family Connection (Hamilton, GA)
About: GFC works together with 20 service providers throughout Harris County in order to “improve the
lives of at-risk children, families and communities.” They also host several creative charitable events
throughout the year.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Attending monthly collaborative meetings, creating
flyers, helping with preparation for GED classes, working on special projects, data analysis, etc.

13. Circles of Troup County (LaGrange, GA)
About: “Circles of Troup County is a high-impact approach to address
poverty. The nationally recognized program combines best practices in
several disciplines including community organizing, case management,
SMART goal setting, financial literacy, peer-to-peer counseling and
learning, and child/youth development.”[1]
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Data input, running
errands, helping plan lunches and events, assisting with poverty
simulations, getting to learn more about the ins and outs of non-profits,
etc.

14. Sound Choices Pregnancy Center (Columbus, GA)
About: Sound Choices is a help center for pregnant, or post-abortive
women seeking counsel and options. They offer a variety of
assistance including free pregnancy tests (including ultrasounds),
health and adoption referrals/information, relationship and pregnancy
counseling, and baby supplies - all with love and the hope of Christ.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Receiving
communications training (official training as receptionist), Shadowing
workers in the ultrasound room, Organizing donations, Helping
prepare for biennial Gala, writing newsletter.

About: MercyMed is a Christ-centered non-profit medical clinic that seeks to provide physical, emotional

love, and honor while providing the highest quality healthcare available to individuals, with or without
insurance.
Potential Service Learning Opportunities Include: Helping out with the different aspects of the clinic
such as the front desk, nursing, event planning, shadowing Dr. Scarborough in the exam rooms, as well as
other administrative tasks.

16. Chipley’s Historical Society (Pine Mountain, GA)
About: Chipley’s Historical Society strives to preserve the local communities history such as old
documents, photographs, and letters. They are located downtown and host several local events,
particularly for holidays such as Veteran’s Day.
