Assets School welcomes you to…
Friday, March 12, 2010
Thank you for joining tonight’s
celebration! Assets’ annual gala
“Illumination, A Stars’ Night Out” is
an apt description for an evening
when supporters of the school
gather together to shine a little extra
light on this school that has such a
tremendous impact on the lives of
its students.
During my two years here at Assets,
I have had the opportunity to meet
so many wonderful kids. They truly are “stars!” As you can see by
the beautiful artwork on our invitations, note cards and this catalog,
our students are incredibly talented. They bring tremendous skills
and abilities that light up everything they do in school…and
everything they will do in life.
To our entire ohana – corporate and individual donors, parents,
teachers, staff, trustees, educators, volunteers and our own alumni –
thank you for sharing our vision and contributing to our endeavors.
The goals and journeys of our students are truly worthy of
illumination.

About Our Chefs
After working hard in several kitchens of the major Hawaii hotels,
Sam Choy finally opened his first stand-alone restaurant on the
Big Island in 1981. Today he has restaurants in Honolulu, Guam
and Japan.
He attributes his success to the amazing mix of cultures and
flavors that make Hawaii unique.
Harold Beltran is the driving force behind BluWater Grill. As
Executive Chef, he has guided his team toward perfection since
opening day back in March of 2004. Giving back to the community
is one of the million things Chef Beltran loves to do, donating his
time and talent to MDA Soiree, Adult Friends For Youth, Assets
School, Dolphin Days and Taste of East Oahu just to name a few.
Elmer Guzman was born and raised on Maui. After graduating
from Baldwin High School, he moved to Honolulu to study at
Kapiolani Community College in their culinary program. He
continued his education at The Greenbrier – one of the world’s
most difficult and prestigious culinary programs. These days he
keeps busy with his popular restaurant, Poke Stop, located at the
Waipahu Town Center.
Joe Akaka started Joe Aloha Catering in Las Vegas in 2000,
where he served as the personal chef for the owner of a fabulous
ranch. He has been catering in Hawaii since moving back here in
2002, working on a variety of events and as a personal chef for
various celebrities. Prior to that, Chef Akaka had the opportunity
to work at Wolfgang Puck restaurants, Spago, Lupo’s and at Alan
Wong’s.
Michelle Nakaya began Ginniberries as a personal chef in 1996.
Ginniberries grew rapidly from a personal chef business to a full
service catering company acquiring a reputation for creative and
contemporary presentation, along with the wide variety of food
flavors. “You can’t live without the classics, but we also like to
bring in food trends that haven’t yet touched the sand of the
islands, all the while keeping things healthy, fresh and local.”

About Our Chefs
Eric Leterc of The Pacific Club has worked in Hawaii for over 18
years in places such as the Pacific Beach Hotel, Alan Wong’s, the
Maui Prince Hotel and the Manele Bay Hotel. Prior to that he trained
in France, honing his skills at the Hotel Royal Club Evian, Hotel Du
Cap and Hotel Negresco. In 2001 he was listed in Pacific Business
News’ top 40 under forty.
Ernesto Limcaco is an integral part of customer relations at Y.
Hata. With his vast experience (family restaurant, three start-up
chain restaurants, catering, hotel restaurants, and owning his own
restaurant) he consults with Y. Hata customers on all aspects of the
foodservice industry and focuses on their success.
JJ W. Luangkhot started his career in New York when he was
just 19 years old. He credits his mentor, Jean Marc Burillier, for
helping him build his future in the profession.
Chef Luangkhot moved to Hawaii in 1994 and it is at JJ’s Bistro
& French Pastry that you can see his creations. You can also
find his desserts at Chai’s Island Bistro, Singha Thai, The
Willows, and at the Espresso Bar at Neiman Marcus.
Alan Takasaki is the owner/chef of Le Bistro in the Niu Valley
Shopping Center in East Honolulu. Specializing in French, Italian,
and Japanese dishes, this intimate eatery has earned high marks
since it opened for business. Chef Takasaki has worked in New
Orleans as a saucier at Hotel Iberville, at New York’s Hotel
Continental and Le Bernadin, and in Los Angeles at the famed
Regency Club. He worked in Belgium and France before finally
heading back to Honolulu.

Schools of the Future
You already know about Assets
School and its mission to
empower gifted and/or dyslexic
children to maximize their
potential and find their places as
lifelong learners in school and
society. At last year’s event, we
introduced a grant project
designed to build an online
community of learners where
participants communicate and
collaborate in order to promote and sustain 21st century skills that students
who learn differently will need for growth and successful transition.
Much has been accomplished since last year! One example, is a private
Ning site that was set up to connect parents in the school. It’s a great
resource for parents to learn more about the latest events, see a window
into the classroom, learn more about the latest research on learning
differences, connect with other parents, and access resources on transition
for their student. Another example is the Moodle, launched this year in the
high school. It allows them to create amazing activities for students
including: audio flash cards for foreign language, links to online help sites
and interactive math activities, discussion forums, online quizzes and
access to digital text. And, this is just the beginning as Assets’ students
break out of the four walls of the classroom and connect and collaborate
with the world!
Assets goal: to create a social and educational network that will connect
the common interests and concerns of our community – students, alumni,
teachers and parents – not just here with families and schools in Hawaii,
but with people and institutions from around the world. Different learners…
no limits … you can help!
Mahalo for Supporting Assets School!
