Learn CPR— Free Class Scheduled
Sadly, 70% of Americans may feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they do not know how to administer CPR
or are hesitant to act. West Deer EMS wants to work to lower those
statistics.
Why learn CPR? Four out of five cardiac arrests happen at home.
Statistically speaking, the life you save by administering CPR is
likely to be someone you know: a child, a spouse, a parent, or a
friend. You can prepare yourself to act in an emergency by attending a community CPR class. Friends & Family CPR Anytime is for
anyone who wants to learn basic CPR skills, choking relief, and
AED awareness, and doesn't need a course completion card to meet
a job requirement.
As part of the Staying Well Together community awareness program, West Deer EMS is offering community CPR classes every
third Saturday from 10am to 12pm at the EMS base on E. Union
Road. The next class is scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 2015. For
further information, please contact Donna Kovac, training coordinator, at 724-265-3033 or 724-321-2039. You can also

The purpose of the Distinguished Alumni Award is to identify,
recognize, celebrate, and honor those alumni who have distinguished themselves in academics, the arts, public service, professional contributions, or athletics at the collegiate or professional
level and who, in so doing, have contributed to the pride and prestige of the Deer Lakes School District.
Earlier this year, the district circulated nomination forms asking
East Deer, Frazer, and West Deer residents to nominate a graduate
from the former East Deer/Frazer, West Deer and Deer Lakes
School Districts who had graduated at least a decade ago and whom
they felt deserved to be recognized. Seven judges, comprising
administrators, individuals from the community at-large, board
members, and a current student of the Deer Lakes School District
selected six honorees from a dozen nominations. The honorees were
selected on the basis of outstanding contributions made in their chosen professions.
Dr. John S. DiSanti Deer Lakes High School Class of 1972
Dr. DiSanti enjoyed a long, extremely successful career in public education, first as a teacher and coach and later as an administrator, including as superintendent of schools at West Allegheny, Derry
Township and his alma mater, Deer Lakes. He currently heads
Optimal Performance by Design, LLC, an education sector consulting agency which seeks to maximize school districts’ potential and
the communities they serve by helping them choose leadership and
curricula that best meet their needs.
Dr. Richard D. Linkenheimer Deer Lakes High School Class of 1982
Dr. Linkenheimer’s educational journey and professional career
is a testament to his persistence. Prior to becoming one of the area’s
most trusted veterinarians, Dr. Linkenheimer worked as a teacher
and in the swimming pool industry. He also spent time in
Columbus, Ohio, Louisville, Kentucky and Starkville, Mississippi
stateside and overseas in such exotic locales as Dublin, Ireland and
St. Kitts, West Indies – all in pursuit of realizing his dream career
which he eventually attained through his unwavering persistence
and the remarkable support and patience of his family.
Ms. Clara Salvi Deer Lakes High School Class of 1970
Ms. Salvi has always been passionate about serving her community. Salvi was a committed student at Deer Lakes and later at
Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Salvi carried that passion with
her throughout her distinguished teaching career at Shaler Area
School District, where she taught Spanish for 34 years. Among her
many career awards and highlights came in 1990 when she was honored with the American Association of Women’s Educator of the
Year Award. She was also twice nominated for the Pennsylvania
Teacher of the Year Award.

passed away in 1997 from complications related to his military service, was a classic overachiever. An early entrant into the Vietnam
War, Simonetti became a decorated veteran, earning a Bronze Star,
an Army Commendation Medal, and a National Defense Service

Mr. Joseph S. Venus - East Deer –
Frazer High School Class of 1954
Mr. Venus is an American artist living in Utah. He has lived out
West for so long and has produced so much Western inspired art
works over the years that many who have followed his successful
career would probably be surprised to know that he actually grew
up in Creighton in the 1950s. Among Venus’ most noteworthy
achievements was being selected by the organizers of the 1998
Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan as one of three American artists
to provide authentic representations of the American West’s land,
culture and history.
Mr. Joshua Wiegand Deer Lakes High School Class of 1999
Mr. Wiegand, the most recent graduate among this year’s
Distinguished Alumni honorees, has dedicated his life to public
safety, logging over 1,300 hours of first responder training.
Weigand has served as a volunteer firefighter going all the way back
to his high school days. In 2008, he was elected Chief the West
Deer Township Voluntary Fire Company No. 3. In 2013, Wiegand
became an inspector for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy.
Weigand’s full-time job is as an Emergency Medical Technician at
the McCandless-Franklin Park Ambulance Authority. Weigand also
works with more than 50 fire departments and EMS services to help
them secure funding through grant writing. In the past 10 years he
has secured more than $6 million in grants and awards including
nearly $1 million for West Deer VFC No. 3.

Deer Lakes Announces
Barnes as Assistant Superintendent
Deer Lakes superintendent Dr. Janell LogueBelden announced today
that Bobbi-Ann Barnes
has been hired as the assistant superintendent of
Deer
Lakes
School
District at an annual salary
of $90,000. Mrs. Barnes
was unanimously approved by the school
board at its March 17 voting meeting following a
pair of interviews, including a comprehensive presentation on mathematics
data analysis and curriculum mapping for the district administrators and
school board members.
Among Mrs. Barnes
many responsibilities will
include aligning Deer
Lakes’ curriculum to meet
state standards as well as
working with district teachers and staff to help design a curriculum
that best meets the needs of Deer Lakes’ students at all grade levels.
“We knew we needed someone who could help our prepare our
students post-graduation regardless of whether that meant they are
college bound, work force bound or technical bound,” said Dr.
Logue Belden, who previously worked with Barnes at Avella Area
School District.
“We were most impressed by Mrs. Barnes’ obvious comprehensive understanding of curriculum design and her proven ability to
take that knowledge and communicate it to various audiences in a
way that not only made sense but felt familiar,” she said.
According to Dr. Logue-Belden, Barnes quickly rose to the top
in the interview process with her experience in starting innovative
programs, proven history of working well with all grade levels, as
well as her experience working in districts of varying size and settings.
Barnes is currently the Elementary School Principal at Avella
Area School District, where she recently spearheaded the district’s
implementation of an entirely new writing curriculum. She also
serves as the school district’s federal programs coordinator.
“I am excited to become a part of the Deer Lakes School District
and getting to know the staff, the community, and the especially the
students to learn about some of the challenges we face as we
improve going forward,” said Barnes.
Prior to Avella, Barnes spent 16 years working in the Keystone
Oaks School District, first as an assistant principal and later as the
principal at Dormont and Fred L. Aiken Elementary Schools. In
2011, Barnes led Aiken to a prestigious National Blue Ribbon
School distinction as one of the nation’s highest achieving elementary schools. Aiken also qualified for Adequate Yearly Progress
(AYP) for each of her years there.
Barnes’ school earned such notoriety through its excellence and
special events that it appeared on local and national television programs including “Live! With Regis and Kelly.”
Barnes who will begin her duties in May , is a married stepmother of two who resides in Oakdale.

On April 15, KDKA Meteorologist Dennis Bowman brought his
traveling weather classroom tour to Curtisville Primary School.
Bowman, an institution in local weather and KDKA’s morning
and noon voice of weather, will retire on April 17. His visit to
Curtisville Primary Center was the final edition of his legendary
Classroom Weather series.
Bowman was welcomed by the cheering students in the packed
auditorium as they showed off their weather hats adorned with
storm clouds, suns, and rainbows.
The students laughed and cheered as Bowman’s sidekick
“Chester Drawers,” took the stage. Bowman and Chester kept the
kids laughing with a few jokes, a story with a moral lesson included, and a song.
During the severe weather talk Bowman emphasized that we
must know how to stay safe from severe storms, whether we are at
home, at school, or in an open setting. The severe weather talk culminated with the creation of a simulated tornado, using boiling
water, dry ice and lots of wind, Bowman showed the students what
a tornado looks like up close using “The Mean, Mean Tornado
Machine.”
Bowman, who combines his love of ventriloquism with his passion for weather, estimates that he has done some 66,000+ weather
forecasts, and visited nearly 2,000 schools in 10 states and the
District of Columbia during his distinguished career.
At the end of the presentation, students carrying cards spelled out
a “Happy Birthday” greeting to Bowman who celebrated his 65th
birthday on April 14. They also recognized his retirement with a
weather themed cake, gift baskets for him and the KDKA morning
staff and a Curtisville Primary Center t-shirt. The presentation was
complete with a “sounds of rain” performance by the students and
staff.
The t-shirt was used as a fundraiser that raised $1,050.50 for the
KD Turkey Fund. Local business owner Leslie Rhodes from Deer
Creek Diner also presented a check in the amount of $1,000.
Curtisville principal Mrs. Jennifer Cavalancia said her students
are honored to share in such a special event. “Our students don’t
often get the opportunity to interact with such an important public
figure so this is obviously a momentous occasion for all of us,” she
said. “We are all very excited to have had the opportunity to experience Mr. Bowman’s informative and interactive program.
Video of Bowman’s visit can be seen on KDKA’s web site.

Also a $250 Jimmy Switalski Military Award will be presented to a person entering a branch of the Armed Forces. There

In early April, Michael O’Hare announced the creation of the
Dody & Stel O’Hare Memorial Scholarship at Slippery Rock
University. The $25,700 endowment will be awarded to and divided by the seven Deer Lakes High School graduates from the Class
of 2015 who have chosen to attend Slippery Rock University beginning in 2015. Those students are Zane Adiyeh, Makenzie Herbinko,
Marissa Hilinski, Jonathan Kendell, Kaitlyn Maher, Samuel Sack,
and Michael Senge.
This scholarship honors O’Hare’s parents, Dody and Stel
O’Hare, who also sent Mike’s older brother Patrick to SRU by way
of Deer Lakes (’65).
As children Dody and Stel each endured the Great Depression
and as young adults they experienced World War II. Dody was
exempt from military service, but voluntarily enlisted in the Navy in
1943. Dody survived the bombing of his ship on Christmas Eve,
1944, in the waters off the coast of the Philippines, while Stel cared
for two young children stateside for more than two years.
After the war, Dody became a route salesman for a soft drink
company and Stel was a homemaker. In 1960, the Hare’s purchased
their first home in the Fawn Haven neighborhood of West Deer.
They loved the West Deer/Deer Lakes community and lived in their
home until their passing. Michael, the scholarship’s founder and the
couple’s youngest son, was a member of Deer Lakes High School’s
first graduating class in 1970.
O’Hare said that while his parents were not able to help their
children with college costs, their support came in the invaluable
forms of encouragement, love, home cooked meals, and whatever
else it took to allow their children to meet with success.
The six Deer Lakes graduates entering Slippery Rock will be
granted $1,000 for their first year, and thereafter the remainder of
the endowment will be awarded based on academic achievement.
The Michael O’Hare family has previously awarded $32,000 in
scholarship money to Deer Lakes graduates through the Geraldine
O’Hare Memorial Scholarship. They say they are proud to support
Deer Lakes schools and Slippery Rock University.

NO LOVE LIKE A MOTHER'S LOVE
There is no love, like a mother's love,
no stronger bond on earth...
like the precious bond that comes from
God, to a mother, when she gives birth.
A mother's love is forever strong,
never changing for all time...
and when her children need her most,
a mother's love will shine.
God bless these special mothers,
God bless them every one...
for all the tears and heartache,
and for the special work they've done.
When her days on earth are over,
a mother's love lives on...
through many generations,
with God's blessings on each one.
Be thankful for our mothers,
for they love with a higher love...
from the power God has given,
and the strength from up above.

New Patio Home Construction in West Deer
The women of the Bairdford United Methodist Church completed a “Matts for the Homeless” project recently. The matts are made
of recycled plastic bags, which were cut into strips, the strips are
tied together, then crocheted to make a 3 ft. x 6 ft. matt. The homeless use the matts as a moisture barrier between the ground and the
cardboard they may be sleeping on.
Joyce Valerio, spokesperson for the group said that many
“Women Hours”, sore fingers and wrists were endured for this labor
of love. A total of 16 women were involved making a total of four
matts. They are sending their matts to Butler where about 30 women
of the Butler United Methodist Church meet once a month for six
hours to make mats.
The process is called Plarning. If you would like more information on how to make the matts, visit: http://www.tenderheartshelpinghands.com/plarn-mats/ or just do a search on matts for the homeless.
