Rotary Notes 5-4-16
It was a beautiful spring day
at The Greens of Le Roy for our
weekly meeting. Brian Foeller
from Le Roy Central School
joined us today as our guest.
Announcements included
REAL (Rotary Excited About
Literature) is now accepting
books, Rent a Rotarian will wrap
up this weekend, and Club Leadership Training will take place on
May 7th in Niagara Falls. Sam
Vagg reported everything is on
track with the Graze to Raise.
The Graze will be May 20th at
Mercy Grove. Sam encouraged
all Rotarians to get donations in
to her as soon as possible. The
event is sold out.
Nanette Chiulli, Jerry McCullough, Jim Ellison, and Tim
Moag were all tagged for missed
meetings. Scott McCumiskey
was fined for a Buffalo Bills
Flag, in an attempt by President
Tony to get Scott on the Buffalo
Bills bandwagon.
It was our pleasure to welcome
Mike Cassata to our Club today.
Mike is the General Manager of
the Le Roy location of Copart Inc.
Our program today was presented by Kim Cox, Superintendent of LSCD, and Brian Foeller,
Business Administrator. Kim
Cox started the program highlighting student & school achievements. Kim and Brian then gave
an overview on the 2016-2017
District Budget. After 8 years,
the District’s Gap Elimination
Adjustment (GEA) has been fully
restored in the State Budget. The
proposed total budget for the
2016-2017 year is $23,214,782.
This is an increase of $393,275
(or about 1.72%) over last year’s
budget. The bulk of the increase
represents increasing operating
and salary costs. The district is

also adding a full time
school psychologist,
and restoring a clerical
position that had been
reduced several years
ago. The District recently
began work on the RITE

inconveniences along the
way, but reminded us that
they will all be worth it.
The Budget Vote will be

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MAY 15, 2016
by Lynne Belluscio
The little pink flags in the field
east of my house indicated where
the ditcher would be digging
trenches for the perforated plastic
drain tile. When completed, the
field would drain west toward
a ditch. The exact location and
pitch of the tile is critical in order
to completely drain the field. It
should alleviate the sitting water
in the spring and make it easier to
get into the field in soggy weather.
After the tile is put in the trench,
everything is covered up and the
field can be plowed and planted.
The importance of proper drainage is understood by farmers, but
most people haven’t a clue about
drain tiles.
Many years ago, when I was
researching the history of agricultural fairs for developing the Ag
Fair at Genesee Country Museum,
I came across the story of drain
tiles and John Johnson of Geneva
and I met a most remarkable man,
Marion “Mike” Weaver.
In 1964 Mike wrote a book: the
“History of Drain Tile” and luckily I have a copy. Mike also had
a large collection of drain tiles. I
remember asking Mike to bring
some of his tiles for an exhibit
during one of the early ag fairs
at Genesee Country. He pulled
up in a an old station wagon, that
was filled with heavy tiles, and
the springs were about flattened
out. There were few people who
appreciated what they saw that
year and several years later Mike
donated his entire collection to the
Geneva Historical Society.
The collection is now part of
the John Johnson Farm adjacent
to historic Rose Hill Mansion.
This is where, in 1838, the first
fields were trenched and tiled in
the United States. John Johnson
was from Scotland where tiles
were used to drain fields. On his
farm in Geneva, he dug 72 miles
of drainage ditches and laid clay
tile on 320 acres. According to his
records he was able to increase his
wheat yield from 12 bushels an
acre to 60 bushels. John Johnson
Tile Drain
is known as the “father of tile
drainage in America.”
Farmers knew the importance of
drawing water away from fields.
Both Cato in 200 BC and Pliny
in the first century AD, described
drainage systems. Sometimes the
trenches were filled with rocks
and covered with larger rocks.
There were all different shapes of
drain tiles. The important story in
Western New York is tied in with
the Erie Canal.
Pottery and potters, such as
nearby Morganville, were manufacturing redware pottery because
that was the type of clay that could
be found locally. Redware glazes
were filled with lead and redware
was fired at a low temperature
and was soft. Once the Erie Canal
opened, potters were able to ship
clay in from the Midwest and
could fire grey stoneware which
was harder and not as porous.
This put the redware potters out
of business, but with the introduction of drain tiles, many redware
potters switched to drain tile
production. (It is believed that the
pottery in Morganville made drain
tile.) Special tile making machines

At the 1862 meeting of the New
York State Agricultural Society
there was a lot of discussion
about tile drainage. Mr. Brooks
of Wyoming County didn’t have
much good to say about drainage
tiles. He said that the investment
per acre could never be justified.
He declared that draining was
the “stupid burying of crockery.”
However, Mr. Peters of Genesee
County stated that he believed
that a system of drainage would
increase state production by a
third. He noted that water stood in
post holes up to mid summer. He
also noted that in undrained fields,
it seemed that the frost would kill
crops earlier in the fall.
L.H.Bailey, Dean of Agriculture at Cornell University wrote
a poem:
Tile Drain
Far under the ground
As men pass by
Unseen and alone
I silently lie
When the plow team tramps
On the full crunching earth
I feel the hard thrust
Of the first harvest birth;
But the plow man thinks not
That I lie down below
And tireless prepare
For the harvest to grow.
Calm and content
I secretly lie
And carry my work
As men pass by,

Little League Wrap Up - May 2-8
A’s 4 Indians 2
The A’s faced the Indians in what would be
a pitcher’s duel on this cool Tuesday evening.
The A’s combination of Shawn Morabito and
Conner Wright would prove too much as the
A’s would squeak out a 4-2 win. Morabito
and Wright could combine for a 4 hitter,
striking out 12 Indians over six innings. Zach
Vanderhoof was very effective for the Indians
giving up 5 hits and 3 earned runs over 5
while striking out 10, before being replaced
by Conner Magee who gave up one run on 2
hits in 1 inning pitched.
Morabito would also provide the offense
for the A’s going 3 for 3 with a triple, scoring
twice and driving in one. Mike Covert also
had a nice day at the place as he went 3 for
2 with two RBI’s including the game winner
that plated Morabito in the 4th. Maveric McKenzie went 3 for 2 with two doubles, one run
scored and an RBI for the Indians in the loss.
White Sox 9 Red Sox 0

all with singles. Adding a excellent defensive
play at 3rd base was Aiden Riggi Robbing a
sure extra base hit from the White Sox with
the bases loaded.
Orioles 22 Tigers 1
The Orioles and Tigers faced off on Thursday night with Spring weather finally seeming
to settle in. The Tigers struck first in the top
of the 1st when Adam Risewick scored on a
Robbie Newmark infield single. Merritt Holly
would also reach base, however Orioles hurler
Jimmy Burns would also settle in and strike
out 3 in a row to close out the first half inning.
The Orioles wasted no time squaring
things up. Shortstop Drew Strollo tripled
down the third baseline to lead off the bottom
of the first, and scored when the relay throw
was off line. A double by big brother Tyler
and big Jimmy Burns would give the O’s a 2-1
lead. Two batters later James Blake plated
Burns to give the O’s an early 3-1 lead.
After a scoreless top, the Orioles came
back to the plate in the 2nd. Iaein Frawley led
off the inning with a single. Two batters later,
Drew Strollo drove Frawley in with another
triple. Tyler Strollo would extend the lead on
the next at bat, driving in Drew to push the
score to 5-1 after 2.
James Blake would take the mound in the
3rd for the Orioles and allow no runs. The
Orioles extended their lead in the bottom of
the inning after a walk to Ben Pocock and singles by Blake and Adrian Stephens, making
the score 7-1. Blake would strike out 3 in the
top of the 4th inning and the Orioles were at it
again with the bats in the bottom half. Drew
Strollo once again showed his wheels on his
third triple of the game. Tyler Strollo knocked
in Drew again with a single, and later scored
on a Jimmy Burns single. Doubles by James
Blake and Adrian Stephens sandwiching a
walk to Andrew Pocock would score 2 more,
leaving the score at 12-1 after 4.
The Strollo brothers would finish the game
on the mound, striking out 5 in the last 2
innings to preserve the win. Offensively, the
Orioles would add 10 runs in the 5th inning,
highlighted by a moon shot 3 run homer by
Jimmy Burns. For the game, the entire Orioles
squad contributed offensively. Drew Strollo
led the way with 4 hits (3 triples, 5 runs, 3
RBI). Tyler Strollo and Jimmy Burns (HR)

pitched. Robbie Newmark had 2 hits, while
Merritt Holly added 3, and Joey Stephany
and Wade Dziedzic had hits as well. Holly
and Stephany pitched as well, as did younger
brother Alex Stephany
Indians 9 Red Sox 8
On Friday, May 6th, the Indians would
host the Red Sox. The visiting Red Sox would
strike first in the top of the 1st inning. John
Panepento would single and score after Joey
Brennan and Luke Caccamise would reach

in the bottom half of the inning with 2 runs
after Cory Wallace doubled scoring Maveric
McKenzie and Zach Vanderhoof. The Red Sox
would tie the game at 2 in the top of the 2nd
after John Panepento doubled scoring Zach
Flansburg. The Indians would try to break
things open in the bottom of the 3rd scoring
4 runs, 2 of which were driven in on a hit by
Jacob Iten. However, the Red Sox would not go
down without a fight. Luke Lathan and Aiden
Riggi would each single and later score on a
ball hit by John Panepento making the game
6-4 after 4 innings. The Red Sox would tack
on another run in the 5th after Xavien Walker
singled and scored. Down 1 run heading in to
the top of the 6th, the Red Sox would take the
lead scoring 3 runs by John Panepento, Joey
Brennan and Luke Caccamise. The Indians
would not be outdone. Maveric McKenzie

Twins 8
Indians 7
It would take an extra inning to decide
this Little League thriller. The Indians would
come out swinging. Maveric McKenzie, Tony
Piazza, Connor McGee and Jack Duyseen
would all single in the first. With McKenzie
and Piazza going on to score runs in the inning
to take the early lead. The Twins would answer
with two runs of their own in the first. Colin
McCulley would lead off with a double to the
left center wall. Cole Rauscher then hit a deep
shot over the left field fence.
The pitchers then settled in and made
it difficult to score runs. Zach Vanderhoof
started for the Indians pitching into the 5th
before being relieved by Cory Wallace. The
Twins started Cole Rauscher who also pitched
into the 5th inning before Brian Roblee came
into finish.
The Indians would break out in the 4th
inning to score 4 runs. They would tack
a run on in the 5th to take a 7-3 lead. The
Twins would rally in their half of the inning,
scoring 4 runs to even things up. Both teams
would threaten but could not score until the
bottom of the 7th. Brian Roblee drew a walk
then stole second. He made his way to third
on a Kaden Burger fielders choice. Antonio
Martinez would score Roblee on a infield hit
to give the Twins the win.
Leading the way at the plate for the Tribe
were Connor McGee(3 singles),Zach Vanderhoof (2 singles), and Maveric McKenzie (2singles). Also hitting for the Indians were Cory
Wallace(triple), Maicen McKenzie (single),
Tony Piazza(single) and Jacob Iten(single).
The Twins pounded out ten hits in the
game. Colin McCulley lead the way for the
Twins with four doubles. Jackson Locke had
three singles. Cole Rauscher hit a HR. Connor
Murrell had a single to center and Antonio
Martinez had the game winning single for
the Twins.
Orioles 5 White Sox 1
The O’s and White Sox matched up in
a mid morning pitcher’s duel on Saturday.
The Orioles struck first in the bottom of the
first inning. Tyler Strollo laced a triple to the
outfield and later stole home to give the O’s
the early lead. However White Sox pitcher
Finn Shelby struck out 5 of the next 6 batters,
baffling Orioles with a dancing knuckleball.
Orioles pitcher Jimmy Burns was dominant as
well holding the White Sox scoreless through
3 frames.
In the bottom of the third inning, Drew
Strollo singled, stole 2 bases and later was
driven in by Tyler Strollo. A walk to Jimmy
Burns eventually resulted in another run, as
the Orioles pitcher capitalized on his speed
and eventually scored as well to make the
score 3-0 after 3 innings.
More excellent pitching by Shelby and
Burns brought the game to the 5th inning
with the score 3-0. The White Sox would
tighten the game in the top of the 5th however,
as slugger Kenny Saunders tripled in rugged
catcher Chase Cummings. Burns would strike
out the next batter to strand Saunders at 3rd,
leaving the score at 3-1.
In the top of the 5th, the Orioles looked to
add insurance runs. This was accomplished
in quick fashion, as speedster Drew Strollo
hammered a shot to right field and circled
the bases to secure a stand-up in-the-park
home run. Two batters later Jimmy Burns
doubled and stole home, extending the lead
to 5-1. James Blake would come in to pitch a
perfect 6th inning, securing the save and an
Orioles victory.
The story in this game was pitching, as
Jimmy Burns earned the win with 14 Ks in 5
innings, only allowing 1 hit. Finn Shelby also
pitched superbly, only allowing 4 hits while
striking out 10. Josh Noble also saw action
on the mound for the White Sox. Offensively,
Drew Strollo had 2 hits including a HR, 2
runs, and RBI. Ty Strollo added a triple, run,
and RBI, while Jimmy Burns doubled and
scored twice. Kenny Saunders provided the
offense for the White Sox, tripling in Chase
Cummings who walked.
Yankees 12 Red Sox 11
The Yankees started off the first inning
loading the bases, but Red Sox pitcher Bryce
Lathan would fight back striking out 2 batters
to get the Sox out of the inning. John Panepento would get things going for the Red Sox
in the bottom of the first hitting his first home
run of his little league career over the fence
in left center field. The inning ended 1-0 Red
Sox. In the second inning the Yankees Adam
Woodworth drew a walk and eventually scored
on Gianni Ferrara RBI double. In the bottom
of the third, with the score tied 1-1. Red Sox
lead-off hitter John Panepento started things
off hitting a single, Joey Brennan would then
double to score Panepento, and the X-Man
Xavien Walker would hit a single to score
Brennan putting the sox up 3-1 after 3.
In the top of the 4th the Yankees bats came
alive. Adam Woodworth again drew a walk,
followed by a Gianni Ferrara single, Ryan
Shirley then drew a walk to load the bases.
Yankees clean-up hitter, Ryan Higgins hit a
2 RBI single to score Woodworth and Ferrara.
Connor Hageman then singled, and Landen
Saeva hit a triple to score Higgins and Hageman. Saeva would later score on a past ball
to put the Yankees up 8-3. The Red Sox would
fight back. In the bottom of the fourth Zach
Flansburg would reach first, John Panepento
doubled and Luke Cacamise singled. Flansburg and Panepento both scored making it an
8-5 game in favor of the Yankees. In the top
of the fifth, the Yankees Jake Higgins drew a
walk, Gianni Ferrara, Tom Condidorio each
had base hits. Ryan Shirley then hit an RBI
single to score Jake Higgins, Ferrara scored
on a past ball, and Ryan Higgins then singled
to score Tom Condidorio and Ryan Shirley.
With the score now 12-5 in favor of the Yankees the Red Sox would start a rally. Joey
Brennan started it off with a single, followed
by singles from Xavien Walker, Aiden Riggi,
Zach Flansburg and a walk by Luke Lathan.
With the bases loaded, John Panepento with
a home run, single, and a double on the day
already, hit a triple, and reached home on an
errant throw to third. The Red Sox would come
up just short of the comeback losing 12-11 to
the Yankees in a nail biter of a game. Pitching
for the Red Sox were Bryce Lathan, and John
Panepento. Pitching for the Yankees were Tom
Condidorio and Gianni Ferrara.
A’s 15 Tigers 4
The A’s took on the Tigers in the third game
of a Derby Day quadruple header. The A’s bats
would tell the story on this day, as they scored
15 runs on 17hits. Brady Fix and Conner
Wright both went 4 for 4 with Brady scoring
4 runs including his two HR’s, a triple and a
double, while Conner scored 3 times. Jackson
Fix and Shawn Moribito both went 3 for 4 with
Shawn following a Brady Fix homerun in the
2nd inning with one of his own for back to
back jacks. Jake Williams had multiple hits
and scored a run for the A’s as well.
The Tigers got hist from Robbie Newmark,
including a double in the first inning and
Adam Risewick. The A’s used 5 pitchers to
scatter three hits while walking 10 batters and
striking out 11. Robbie Newmark and Alex
Stephany worked the mound for the Tigers.
The win improved the A’s record to 5-0 while
the Tigers dropped to 0-6.
A’s 10 Twins 7
A rare Sunday game on Mother’s Day saw
the undefeated A’s face the also unbeaten
Twins. What appeared to be a pitcher’s duel
turned out to be the opposite as both teams
combined for 21 hits in a 10-7 A’s victory. Cole
Rauscher wasted no time getting things going
for the Twins as he would hit a 2-run homerun
for his third HR of the young season in the
first. The A’s would come right back scoring
three in the bottom of the inning when a bases
loaded double by Shawn Morabito would score
two. Morabito would score on a Jake Williams
single to make it 3-2 A’s after one.
Both starting pitchers Morabito and Colin
McCulley would settle down and strike out the
side in the 2nd. Brett Babcock would triple in
the 3rd and score on a single by Jackson Locke
to tie the game for the Twins. The A’s would
go back on top in the bottom of the inning
when Morabito would double in Jackson Fix
who reached on single.
The offenses would open up in the 4th as
the Twins scored four runs on timely walks
and hits by Brett Babcock, Jackson Locke and
McCulley. The A’s answered right back as DJ
O’Geen would get things going when his first
LL hit would score Mike Covert before doubles by Conner Wright and Brady Fix would
plate 5 more runs giving the A’s a 10-7 lead.
Relievers Conner Wright and Brett Babcock
would finish off the the 5th and 6th innings
with no damage being done.
The A’s pitchers combined to strike out 13
while walking 3. The Twins struck out 8 while
walking 4. The win improves the A’s to 6-0
while the loss drops the Twins to 4-1.
