Mercy for Us
Mercy from Us
From Father Godfrey
- As we have been in the news this past week
again, I remind everyone of the MANY internal
financial controls that have been put in place to
help keep our funds safe through the diligent
work of our parish Finance Council. We have
segregated duties for deposits, check-writing,
and check-signing. We have instituted a policy
that all financial reporting comes directly from
the Parish Data System software instead of being translated into
other programs. We are finally compliant with Canon Law, in that
the pastor’s oversight is required for every account bearing the
name of St. Benedict Cathedral. We have required some accounts
that were opened by individuals for parish activities to be converted
so that this consistency and transparency can be maintained. Bank
statements for all parish accounts now come directly to the parish
office for regular review.
- Some have asked for more details about the Cafeteria case: everything we know was contained in the Police Department Press
Release.
- Sincere thanks to all who helped make the PTO Mardi Gras such
a wonderful event. This event will clearly help us tend to the many
needs in our aging school buildings. And thanks to all who took
part and supported these efforts!
- Soon, at the suggestion of the Adult Faith Formation Committee,
I’ll be composing a brochure about annulments. This will be part
of our Easter mailing. Some things have changed, including the
elimination of fees. Much has not changed: the sanctity and indissolubility of marriage, the need to prove nullity (some reason that at
the time of the exchange of consent there was some lack of freedom on
the part of one or both parties). More info soon.
- Tax letters were mailed before the January 31 deadline. If you
have received a letter with totals that don’t match your giving,
please just let us know. We’ll be happy to correct our records. As I
wrote on each of those letters, THANK YOU for your generosity!
- Thank you to all who made CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK a
great celebration. Thanks especially to Sr. Karlene, our principal,
and all her staff and faculty. What a blessing our school is to our
parish and the City of Evansville!
- WE ARE ONCE AGAIN IN NEED OF FAMILIES WHO
WILL HELP STRAIGHTEN UP THE PEWS AFTER THE
SUNDAY 10:30 MASSES. If you’re able to help, please just step
right in to do this good work — raising up the kneelers, removing
trash and papers, depositing hymnals in the boxes. Thank you in
advance for your generous assistance.
- Soon, you will be receiving a request for your commitment to
STEWARDSHIP OF TIME AND TALENT. This community
of faith only works if we all pitch in according to our ability. We
spend thousands of dollars a year paying people to do things that I
know our parishioners are able to do. So much of what we do requires volunteer labor. As far as I see it, everyone’s gifts are needed,
or God wouldn’t have given them. Please get ready to celebrate
what you’ve done the past year and what you’ll do this year.

St. Vincent de Paul
Last week with all the snow and snow
closings, St. Ben’s Vincentians still visited patients in the Evansville State
Hospital and nursing home residents
but we were unable to make more than
2 home visits. Only 2 St. Ben’s Vincentians made home
visits to 2 of our St. Ben’s neighbors in need where 6
poor folks live in family. With $330 of the alms you
entrusted to our care, and on your behalf, we helped
them by giving them SVdeP Thrift Store Vouchers for
household goods. Thank you. God bless you.
Theology Uncapped
Next Theology Uncapped is Wednesday,

Symbolon—
The Catholic Faith Explained
Looking for a way to deepen your faith during Lent?
Consider joining one of the groups that will meet to
view Symbolon, a video series that focuses on core
Catholic beliefs and how these beliefs fit together and
what difference it makes for our lives. During these 5
sessions, we will focus on our encounter with God in
the sacraments. There will be sessions between the
8:30 and 10:30 Masses on Sunday AND the same session will be offered again the following Tuesday after
the 9 a.m. Mass. The following is the schedule: The
Sacraments (Sun.,Feb. 14 and Tues., Feb. 16); The Eucharist (Sun., Feb. 21 and Tues., Feb. 23); Walk
Through the Mass (Sun., Feb. 28 and Tues., Mar. 1);
Penance & The Anointing of the Sick (Sun., Mar. 6
and Tues., Mar. 8); Matrimony & Holy Orders (Sun.
Mar. 13 and Tues., Mar. 15). All of the sessions stand
alone, there is no fee for the program, and all are welcome.
Hospitalizations
Because of increased security of healthcare information, we are no longer informed when a parishioner
is admitted to the hospital, especially if it's through the
Emergency department. Please call the parish center
when a family member is in the hospital and we will be
happy to visit them. The same goes for Nursing
Homes, as well. Also, it's good to be anointed before
surgery. If you're preparing for surgery, please ask a
priest to anoint you beforehand.

24 Hours for the Lord
In this Jubilee of Mercy, Pope Francis has called for 24
Hours for the Lord on March 4 and 5, 2016. He asked
that dioceses around the world celebrate the Sacrament
of Reconciliation for 24 consecutive hours. While wanting to support Pope Francis but at the same time balancing the resources and facts in our diocese (population,
rural in nature, etc.) the Year of Mercy Committee has
recommended, and Bishop Thompson has approved, the
following 24 Hours for the Lord - Friday March 4 and
Saturday Mar 5, 2016. This will take the place of the
Light is on for You. St. Benedict Cathedral and St. Francis Xavier Basilica will offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation on: Friday, March 4, 2016 from 6—8pm and Saturday, March 5, 2016 from 9—11am and 1—3pm.

The Cocoon Tree
This Lent we will again have
the opportunity to help the
residents of the House of
Bread and Peace through
participating in the Cocoon
Tree Program. The House of
Bread and Peace is a shelter
for homeless women and
children. During Lent there will be trees in the back of
church with “cocoons” on them. Each “cocoon” has
on it the name of something that the House of Bread
and Peace is in need of—food, cleaning supplies, etc.
You simply take the “cocoon” from the tree and bring
the item back by placing it under the tree. The items
will then be delivered to the House of Bread and Peace.
Thank you for helping those in need.
“Souper” Sunday
As in years past, we will again collect soup for the
House of Bread and Peace on the weekend of Super
Bowl Sunday, February 6/7. Boxes will be placed in the
vestibules and in the back of church
marked “Souper” Sunday. The
House of Bread and Peace is a shelter for women and children. Thank
you for all your help.
