The theme of this year’s festival is “Tako – Japanese Kites” The JCCC and Kobayashi Hall will be decorated with colorful and elaborate
kites to welcome the spring and the long-awaited close of the winter season. Festival guests entering the Centre will be greeted by an
elaborate display of Hina Matsuri Dolls.
Haru Matsuri will feature Japanese arts and crafts demonstrations such as Ikebana (flower
arranging), Bunka Shishu (embroidery), Sumi-e (brush painting), and Shodo (calligraphy) and
Cha-no-yu (Tea Ceremony). The JCCC offers classes in all of these areas and you can sign
up for our Spring programmes. Special demonstrations of Japanese kite-making will illustrate
the craftsmanship and artistry behind the tako. There will be various booths of origami, dollmaking, and more.

an exhibition of Meiji Era artifacts and swords presented by the Token Kai Japanese Sword
Society of Toronto.

MOVIE NIGHT IN THE KOBAYASHI HALL
The Twilight Samurai: Tasogare Seibei
“It’s wonderful to see a Japanese movie in which a samurai, for all his
somber discipline and skill, is also a touching and complicated ordinary
man”
Owen Glieberman, Entertainment Weekly
Hiroyuki Sanada and Rie Miyazawa star in this quiet and deeply
affecting story of a most unusual samurai. Gently-paced and subtle
in presentation, The Twilight Samurai captures a side of the famed
samurai that is rarely seen. Set in a northeastern province (Shonai) of
late nineteenth century Japan, the film tells the story of Seibei Iguchi
(Hiroyuki Sanada)--a low-ranking, debt-ridden samurai who, after
losing his wife to consumption, struggles to care for his two young
daughters and senile mother. Emphasizing the conflicts between duty
and family, and love and class rank, director Yoji Yamada has created a
film that is deeply engaging on several levels: a classic tale of honour,
love, and courage.
Winner of 12 Japanese Film Academy Awards, as well as an Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, The Twilight
Samurai lives up to its billing. But don’t expect an action-packed, samurai-fighting film - just a quiet and moving masterpiece.

REVIEW OF TORONTO TOKEN KAI
JANUARY MEETING
The Toronto Token Kai met on January 15th. The topic of this
meeting was Hizento – the swords of Hizen Province in the Shinto
era with a focus on the sideline smith - Shodai Masahiro. The aims
of the talk were as follows:
-To introduce Hizento
-To provide examples of the range of work of Shodai
Masahiro
-To teach you how to look at a sword
-To let you handle swords
-To teach you how to compare swords
-To challenge you to apply what you learned in an
attempt to solidify your knowledge
During the talk, Barry Hennick (Token Kai treasurer) illustrated the
presentation with eight swords made by Shodai (first generation)
Masahiro and two swords made by Nidai (second generation)
Masahiro. After the formal part of presentation six Shodai Masahiro
blades were set out for the group to handle. Full scale oshigata
(drawings of the features) of five blades were hung so that people
could look for the features in the specific blades. All assembled
enjoyed the hands on aspect of the presentation. The PowerPoint
presentation used to support the talk can be viewed at www.

NOBODY KNOWS, winner of the Best Actor Award at the 2004

of innocence from Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda, and based
on a real 1988 event, this fictional retelling recreates the story of

MOMIJI BAZAAR
By Chris Okawara, Momiji Bazaar Chair
Momiji Health Care Society staff and volunteers are hard at work
planning the upcoming Community Bazaar to be held on Saturday
April 2 at 3555 Kingston Road at Markham Road from 12-3:30 pm.
Think of us as you clear away things you no longer need. The
sushi, manju, karinto and baked goods booths will also be glad of
your contributions – they are always early sell-outs.
Become involved as a volunteer. Ask about our karinto, manju
and sushi bees; offer your help in setting up, tearing down and in
manning the various stations. Please contact Jovel Patricio at the
Momiji office (416) 261-6683 if you are able to help.
Ask your company to donate larger articles to our very popular
silent auction or foodstuffs for our snackbar, dining room, tea room
or ingredients for our pre-packaged food sales areas.
Come out on April 2nd to meet your friends, enjoy some Japanese
cuisine and hunt for bargains. We hope to see you all there!
THE VANCOUVER ASAHI
BASEBALL TEAM
By Pat Adachi
Over the years, we have had such wonderful support from the
community and all the fans throughout Canada and Japan. With
the presentation of the Asahi at Skydome in 2002, and their
induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in
June 2003, the Asahis have been acknowledged as an important
part of our Canadian history.
This April 28, 2005, the Asahi Baseball Team will be inducted
into the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame at a fabulous “Banquet of
Champions” at the Westin Bayshore Resort and Marina in
Vancouver. Information is available at: www.vancouverasahi.org or
e-mail: [email protected]. On the following day,
April 29th, there will be a more informal gathering at the B.C. Sports
Hall of Fame and Museum. In conjunction with the celebration,
the Asahi exhibit will be held at the Japanese Canadian National
Museum in Burnaby, B.C.
This is a great undertaking. The cost of developing this exhibit
and later touring across Canada as a traveling museum becomes
costly. But it is well worth the effort to maintain the Asahi legacy
for future generations – not only about the baseball team but of
the Japanese Community and it’s people. We appeal to you to
read the enclosed brochure and to support us in this important fund
raising.
Many thanks.

NUTS FOR PROTEINS
By Haruko Ishihara
Whatever you call them,
carb-restrictive diets seem
to be in fashion these days.
It is common to hear that
someone is trying to cut
down on carbohydrates
and to increase their
consumption of proteins.
Apart from the argument on whether carb restriction is healthy or
not, let’s think about protein sources. Proteins are important to
build up and to repair tissues such as muscles, skins, hair, nails
and internal organs. They are also large components of hormones,
antibodies (immune system), enzymes and hemoglobin. Proteins
are made up of amino acids. Out of 22 amino acids there are 9
essential amino acids that cannot be manufactured in the body and
need to be taken from foods (or supplements).
Many people connect protein directly to meat; i.e. they believe
that they need to eat red meat, poultry, or fish in order to get enough
proteins and/or to get all 9 essential amino acids. However, there
are many other foods that you can obtain plenty of protein from
and many ways to obtain all 9 essential amino acids. For example,
nuts and seeds are excellent sources of protein. Believe it or not,
many of them contain close to 20% protein. Unlike red meat and
poultry, the fats contained in them are essential fatty acids, the
good fats. They are high in B vitamins, vitamin E, selenium, and
zinc. Moreover, nuts and seeds contain a good amount of fibre!
Nuts and seeds are plant protein and they don’t always provide you
all 9 essential amino acids but by combining nuts with legumes you
can solve the problem. It is very important to keep in mind that nuts
are fragile to light and heat, and easily gets rancid. So try to avoid
roasted nuts, buy them in small amounts in their shell and store
them in the fridge or freezer.
This recipe, Grilled Eggplant with Miso & Walnuts Sauce
Donburi, is great for getting all nutrients, proteins, carbohydrates
(they are complex carbs, the good ones!) and good fats.

WINTER DRIVING
By Toronto Police
Winter has arrived and snow and colder weather will continue on for
a while. Snow storms always brings an increase in accidents. This
is caused partly by changing road conditions and also the failure of
drivers to change their driving habits for winter conditions.
Before the next cold spell arrives, ensure your car is properly
prepared. Have your vehicle properly tuned and this should
include checking the battery and starting systems. Replace old
wiper blades and ensure your antifreeze can withstand cold winter
temperatures. Equip your car with a window scraper. Have your
exhaust system checked and if necessary replaced. A faulty
exhaust system can allow carbon monoxide gas to seep into your
car. With all the windows closed, this could cause drowsiness and
result in an accident. Consider leaving your window open slightly
to allow fresh air inside.
If you travel the expressways, or travel out of town, it is
recommended that the following items be stored in the trunk of
your car in case you are stranded in a storm:
- a shovel
- sand, kitty litter or a mat can be used as traction aids
- battery booster cables
- blankets and warm clothing
- a “CALL POLICE” sign (attach to your window to
encourage passing motorists to call for assistance)
- candles and matches to supply warmth inside your car
if it will not start
- road flares
- non-perishable food items such as chocolate bars,
granola bars, etc.
- snow tires
If your vehicle becomes disabled in a winter storm, remain with your
car and wait for assistance to arrive. Consider purchasing a cellular
phone for use in emergency situations. The emergency number
is 9-1-1 and help can be obtained in over 150 other languages
(through the help of Language Line Services interpreters).
Winter driving is a matter of preparation and common sense.
The posted speed limit may not be appropriate, adjust the speed of
your vehicle to match road conditions. Avoid sudden lane changes
or panic braking which could cause your vehicle to skid and result
in an accident. Movement of cold air under bridges and overpasses
results in early ice formation. This can cause unsuspecting drivers
to lose control. Watch for yellow caution signs warning of this
condition.
