F. Daniel “Dan” Ewald
Dan Ewald, of Chelsea, Michigan, age 91, peacefully passed away at home, with his family, on
Tuesday, January 20, 2015. He was born on November 17, 1923 in Detroit, MI and was raised
in Chelsea, MI. The son of Fred and Martha (Schenk) Ewald. On November 1, 1947, he
married his love, Clara (Miller) Ewald.
Dan was a World War II Veteran, who served as a US Marine from 1942-1946. He flew on the
VMTB-131 Torpedo Bombing Squadron, on an A4 Skyhawk Aircraft. He was also a gunner, on
the SB2C Hell Diver. Dan retired after 33 years from Dana Corp, as a Field Service Engineer.
He was known to bring two pieces of paper to a meeting – one with the problem and one with
the solution. He had a passion for: Fishing, Hunting, Golfing, and all things relating to nature
and the outdoors, which he loved to share with his children, grandchildren, and
great-grandchildren. Dan was also a great Artist and attended Saginaw Art school after
returning home from the Service. He used his talent for many of his work presentations,
community and family events. He was also an active member of the First United Methodist
Church.
Dan leaves his children: Martha Salyer of Chelsea, Carol Ford of Chelsea, Jane Engel (Jay
Wade) of Homer, Joseph (Beth) Ewald of Chelsea, and daughter-in-law Beverly Ewald of

Chelsea; grandchildren: Jennifer Ewald, Rein Ewald, Sarah (Tim) VanSchoick, Gregory
(Bethann) McKeighan, Brett (Mike Jones) Salyer, Ryan Ford, Leah Ford, Daniel (Kristy) Engel,
Valerie (Scott) Steele, Lisa (Jacob) Eby, Linda (Jonathan) Streeter, Josie Ewald, and Preston
Ewald; great-grandchildren: Reid Ewald, Max Daniel VanSchoick, Lucy Steele, Elliott Steele,
Owen Eby, Gwen Eby, Parker Streeter and Odin Streeter.
He was preceded in death by his wife Clara (Miller) Ewald, son Theodore Ewald, son-in-law
Robert Salyer, his parents Martha and Fred Ewald, sister Gene, and brothers Roland, Jim
(Jasper), and Vern.
He will be missed and remembered, for the quality time he spent with his family. He was a
selfless, kind, and honorable man.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 6, 2015, at the Staffan-Mitchell
Funeral Home, Chelsea, with Rev. Tom Macaulay officiating. The family will receive family and
friends at the funeral home on Thursday, February 5, from 5-8 p.m. and Friday, February 6,
from 1-2 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Chelsea Athletics or Inverness
