case for support
“
For the past 35 years,
Motability has provided
freedom and independence
to disabled people across
the UK.
How the Motability Scheme works
Motability enables disabled people to lease a car, scooter or
powered wheelchair using their government-funded mobility
allowance.
The following allowances can be used:
• Higher Rate Mobility Component of Disability Living
Allowance (HRMC DLA)
• Enhanced Rate of the Mobility Component of Personal
Independence Payment (ERMC PIP)
• War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
Motability is a registered charity, founded
in 1977 and incorporated by Royal Charter.
Motability has enabled over three million
disabled people to become mobile by
exchanging their mobility allowance to lease
a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair.
• Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
Charitable Grants from Motability
If a standard production car does not meet the mobility needs
of an individual, Motability can provide charitable grants to
those who require a complex solution to suit their individual
needs and who are unable to meet the cost this requires.
For many disabled people being mobile can be
life-changing. Access to suitable transport means they
can do the simple things that many people take for
granted, like dropping their children to school, getting
to the supermarket and attending essential doctor or
hospital appointments. Being mobile can also empower
them to pursue work or education and to participate in
hobbies and pastimes in their local communities.
Examples of these are:
Here, in our case for support, you will find more information
about: how Motability works; how vital our charitable
grants fund is; and how we are raising funds to meet the
need of charitable grants. Most importantly, we would like
to share some stories which show first-hand how important
the work of Motability is.
Our ability to make charitable grants is dependent upon
voluntary income. To ensure we make the best use of our
supporters donations, all beneficiaries of a grant are
means-tested so we only help the most disadvantaged people,
and we only provide the least expensive suitable solution so
we can help as many people as possible. Last year we made
3,193 charitable grants to disabled people across the UK.
“
Beneficiary stories
• Car adaptations (such as wheelchair hoists or infra-red
controls)
• Vehicle Advance Payments (often for larger, more
expensive vehicles)
• Driving lessons for 16-24 year olds, ensuring young disabled
people have access to driving tuition in specially adapted cars.
Here you can read some stories from people we have
helped in the last year:
Amber-Rose
Four year old Amber-Rose is happy and outgoing – she loves her
dollies and having tea parties with them. She has central apnea,
global development delay and has seizures; conditions which
affect her breathing and mobility. She also has low muscle tone
and hypermobility so her family need to travel with a lot of extra
equipment including an adapted pushchair and oxygen.
Amber-Rose lives with her mum, dad and brother. Her mum
Nicola explains “Before we found out about Motability we had
a car but we could not fit the whole family and Amber-Rose’s
equipment in. Also, the car was low down and my back was
constantly strained from lifting her in and out”. Nicola found out
about Motability from her key worker and they approached us
for a charitable grant towards a suitable car that could
accommodate the family’s needs.
Nicola says “The help from Motability has made such a difference
to our lives. I can fit Amber-Rose’s equipment in the car and the
higher seating has made lifting her in and out of the vehicle much
easier. Most importantly, we can travel together as a family.”
Lesley
Lesley is a 32 year old learning support assistant at a technology
college. She lives with her husband Craig and their three year old
daughter. Lesley has Lupus and Sjorgen’s Syndrome – an auto-immune
disease that causes restricted movement in her limbs.
Lesley describes herself as a positive, bouncy person. She has been
living with Lupus since she was 15 years old but it was only when
she had her daughter three years ago that her condition worsened
significantly. She says “Having my daughter caused my condition
to deteriorate. It was devastating as we had been trying to have a
baby for seven years and all the things we had hoped to do with
her are now more difficult”. Lesley and Craig, who is also disabled,
applied to Motability for help to get a car big enough to accommodate
Lesley’s scooter, Craig’s wheelchair and a hoist to lift the scooter in
and out. Lesley says “Our Motability car has been a lifeline. Without
the car I would not be able to get out to do the shopping or take my
daughter out.
Motability has been there throughout my disability and when my
condition worsened they have been there to make sure I get the car
that most suits my needs. It allows me to keep my independence.”
Zoe
Zoe, 17, is currently studying science at college and plans to
go to university. Zoe has cerebral palsy which limits her ability
to walk.
She applied to Motability for help with driving lessons in an
automatic car with hand controls, and Motability funded
40 lessons in a specially adapted car with a trained driving
instructor. Zoe has been a Motability customer for a number
of years. As a child her parents drove her around, but now
she is 17 she hopes learning to drive will enable her to move
forward with her education, enjoy days out with her friends
and give her greater independence.
Margaret
Margaret is four and lives with her mum, dad and sisters.
She loves swimming and going to the park. Margaret has
spina bifida and hydrocephalus so she finds it very difficult
to walk and uses a walking frame. She also needs to travel
with a lot of specialist mobility equipment. Before the family
discovered Motability they had a small vehicle and there
wasn’t enough space for the family to travel together with
all of Margaret’s equipment.
Margaret’s mum Sarah explains “We used to have an old car
that was always breaking down. It became so expensive to
run and I was always worried on every journey – especially if
I had Margaret in the car. Since we got our first Motability car
life has been brilliant. We finally have a car that is reliable
and I know that every time I put the key in the ignition it is
going to start. I can’t tell you what a relief that is. It is larger
so I can fit in all the equipment Margaret needs without
stress, and we are able to go out as a family in one vehicle.
We are very grateful to Motability for their help.”

How we raise money
Motability raises money in a variety of ways: from individuals who fundraise for us, donations from
charitable trusts and foundations, corporate support and from our trading activity.
Individual giving
Corporate fundraising
Individual supporters play an important role in our fundraising and
we are grateful for their on-going generosity which comes from
a range of activities including; sponsored events or challenges,
raffles and appeals. Our most committed supporters make regular
monthly gifts to us and some donors choose to remember us
in their will or make a gift in remembrance of a loved one.
In a tough economic climate Motability’s corporate
supporters remain committed to supporting our charitable
aims and objectives.
• In 2011/12, we raised over £1.67 million from raffles,
appeals, regular gifts and subsequent gift aid claimed.
In 2011/12, we raised £234,000 through employee fundraising,
corporate donations and events.
Some important contributions were:
• A national events programme which raised over £90,000.
• Corporate partner RSA committed over £90,000 in donations
and employee fundraising.
Trusts and Foundations
We are extremely grateful to Trusts and Foundations who
continue to provide substantial support to Motability.
• In 2011/12, we received 140 gifts from grant-making
organisations, ranging from £50 to £20,000. These individual
gifts provided a total of £243,000 to help disabled people.
• Asda donated £20,000 from their scheme which fines
non-disabled drivers who park in disabled bays in their
car parks.
• Almost £25,000 was raised from companies supporting
our Christmas Appeal.
Trading
Motability carries out trading activities to generate income
including commission earned from our affinity Home, Pet
and Travel Insurance products and seasonal product sales
at Christmas, Easter and Valentines.
Haven Holidays continued to offer special holiday discounts
to our customers, generating commission to Motability of
over £40,000.
• In 2011/12, we raised £241,000.
