Scholarships Benefit Tuality Employees
and Leave a Legacy
T
here are many ways to honor the lives of
friends and loved ones while giving back
to the community. One way is by setting
up a scholarship fund that will benefit countless
others well into the future.
Each year, the Tuality Healthcare Foundation is
able to distribute money to Tuality Healthcare
employees whose objective is to continue
their education and advance within the Tuality
Healthcare community. The Scholarship
Committee, made up of members of the
Foundation’s Board of Directors and Tuality
Healthcare’s director of Human Resources,
meets three times per year to evaluate
candidates and administer funds.
In 2005-2006, more than $24,000 was
awarded to people working toward completing
continuing education credits, Bachelor’s,
Master’s and Doctorate degrees, as well as
post-graduate seminars.
To date, the following Employee Scholarships
are available:
The Helen Schoen Scholarship Fund was
established by Herman Schoen to recognize
the outstanding nursing care his wife received
in her final days while a patient at Tuality
Community Hospital. Mr. Schoen’s generous
gift establishing the scholarship expresses his
desire to ensure that this quality care continues.
The Helen Schoen Scholarship provides funds
for employees of Tuality Healthcare involved in
direct patient care who seek to enhance their
education in health-related careers.
Generous contributions to the “Well Into
the Future” Endowment have provided
scholarship funds for employees of Tuality
Healthcare who are pursuing studies that
will enhance their knowledge and skills, and
contribute to the high quality of health care
in our community. “Well Into the Future”
scholarships are available to all Tuality
Healthcare employees; they are not restricted
to those involved in direct patient care.
The Foundation’s R.E. Hutchinson, M.D.
Health Scholarship Fund was set up by the
board of directors to honor Dr. Hutchinson’s
commitment to Tuality and the community.
Scholarships from this fund are restricted
specifically to employees pursuing further
education and training in a medical position.
Contributions to the Jane Kay Pitts Nursing
Scholarship Fund provide a way for Tuality
employees to pursue educational opportunities
in the nursing fields. Established through
generous donations from Jane Kay’s family,
friends, and her family at Tuality, this fund pays
tribute to her dedication to the nursing field and
the community in a lasting way.
The Judy Browning Memorial Scholarship
was established by Robert Browning and his
family in memory of his wife Judy Browning
who was cared for at Tuality Community
Hospital. Funds will be used for continuing
education seminars and classes for nonmanagerial, hands-on patient-care clinic staff.
To qualify for any of these scholarships,
applicants must be current employees who have
worked for Tuality Healthcare for at least one
year; are enrolled in an accredited educational
program or wish to attend a workshop, seminar
or any continuing education program or wish
to receive certification or re-certification. An
application and interview process provides the
panel an opportunity to meet and determine the
financial need of each candidate.
Those who receive assistance appreciate
the support for a number of reasons. Kelly
McDowell, surgery clinical support analyst,
is currently completing a Business Marketing
degree.
“Winning a scholarship has impacted me
in several different ways,” she said. “It has
provided me some much needed financial
breathing room and has allowed me to take
classes that I would otherwise have had to defer.
It also reinforces that Tuality Healthcare cares
enough about its employees’ long-range goals to
provide outlets for educational assistance. By
advancing my education, I will have more to
offer Tuality.”
It’s one more way members of the community
are helping us in our mission of “building a
healthier community”.
For more information about creating a
scholarship fund, contact Marni Eilers, manager
of annual giving, at 503-681-1577 or

Top Pinot Noir Auction Cont
to Break Records
¡S
alud! Oregon’s Pinot Noir Auction
celebrated its 15th anniversary with
animated bidding on unique, premium
wines and exciting oral and silent auction
items. A record $754,000 was raised, with
$166,400 contributed by the barrel auction alone.
The two-day event ranks among the Northwest’s
top fundraisers and was an opportunity to
preview wines from the 2005 vintage from
42 of Oregon’s premier wine producers.
The event, held November 11 and 12, focused
on exclusive Pinot Noir cuvées created by each
of the 42 participating wineries. The barrel
auction drew bids in excess of $1,000 for the
majority of the 168 case lots, with several
topping $2,000. The highlight of Sunday’s black
tie dinner was the Special Appeal paddle raise
that generated close to $110,000, jumpstarted
by a $32,500 collaborative pledge by the
participating vintners.
Co-chairs Danielle Andrus Montalieu of Soléna
Cellars and Adam Campbell of Elk Cove
Vineyards credited the event’s impressive success
in part due to an increased demand for Oregon
Pinot Noirs.
Campbell said, “Our winemakers stepped up
with spectacular wines and generous supporters
responded with terrific energy. We’re seeing an
increased awareness of the cause and everyone
involved is passionate about ¡Salud!”
Montalieu added, “Oregon vintners have
a reputation for independence and this
outstanding show of support and respect for a
workforce without whom our wines wouldn’t be
possible, says a great deal for our winemaking
community.”
For the first time in the benefit’s history, the
2007 auction will be held on a Friday and
Saturday (Nov. 9 and 10) as opposed to the
traditional Saturday and Sunday.
For further information, visit
www.saludauction.org.
¡Salud! provides healthcare outreach services for
seasonal vineyard workers and their families.
Since this mobile workforce rarely qualifies
for health insurance plans, they are unable to
receive benefits. To fill this void, a dedicated
group of Oregon winery owners, Tuality
Healthcare physicians and others associated
with the Tuality Healthcare Foundation created
a bi-lingual, bi-cultural service calling it ¡Salud!,
for the traditional Spanish toast “to your health.”
Through ¡Salud! seasonal workers receive health
education, cholesterol and diabetes screenings,
dental care, assistance with medical paperwork,
and more. Referrals are made for necessary
medical aid beyond the financial means of most
recipients, including quality pre-natal care,
hospitalizations and surgeries. In 2006 alone,
¡Salud! served over 4,000 qualified individuals.

9th Annual Golf Tournament
Scores a Hole-in-One
$150,000 New
Donation makes
a splash!
W
he Foundation is proud and pleased to
announce that the Tuality Healthcare
Volunteer Council, formerly known as
the Auxiliary, has agreed to donate funds to
the Foundation, once again! Their $150,000
donation will be put to use in the Foundation’s
current “Building a Healthier Community”
Campaign.
T
hat started in 1997 with a mere 36
golfers grew to 210 participants at
one of Oregon’s most prestigious golf
courses. The 9th annual Putt and Pray Golf
Tournament took place on Wednesday, May 10,
2006, at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club
in Aloha, Oregon.
The event, presented by the Cerner
Corporation, raised more than $55,000 to
help support Tuality Healthcare’s spiritual and
community outreach activities, easily clearing
the organizers’ goal of $50,000.
“The tournament provides enjoyment for many
people, but is also an excellent communication
tool to the community to explain what we do
and why this is important,” said the event’s
founder, Dick Halaas, chaplain, Tuality
Healthcare.
Tuality’s spiritual outreach programs include
Chaplain Services, which provides faith-based
support and counseling to patients and families
within the hospital facilities. The Parish
Nurse program works with nurses and other
healthcare professionals who volunteer in their
own faith communities to “bridge gaps” in
health services and education.
The beautiful spring day started with lunch
overlooking The Reserve’s North and South
courses. Golfers had the opportunity to practice
their swing on the driving range before the
shotgun sounded, marking the start of play.
Along the way, players competed in fun contests
and enjoyed the company of community
members and friends.
Organizers invited people of all skill levels to
join in, and Halaas said that the team “scramble”
format is helpful for those who may not be as
confident in their game. “It gives everyone a
chance to contribute their best plays to the team
effort,” he said.
And speaking of team, Putt and Pray wouldn’t
be possible without the hard work and
dedication of the Steering Committee event
volunteers and all of our major sponsors.
Mark Your Calendars!
The 10th Annual Putt and Pray Golf
Tournament is set for Wednesday,
May 9, 2007, at The Reserve. Golfer
check-in and lunch is scheduled for noon,
with tee-off time set for 1:30 p.m. sharp.
Cost is $125 per player or $500 per
foursome (fees cover the round of golf,
driving range usage, cart rental, box lunch,
banquet dinner, and prizes).
To register, call the Tuality Healthcare
Foundation at 503-681-1770 or visit
www.puttandpray.org.
Gifts made to this campaign will be spent to
improve and renovate facilities, purchase new
equipment, and provide important health
education classes and programs.

the Council is helping us to move this campaign
forward in the right direction.”
Comprised of community volunteers, the Council
has served Tuality, its patients and their families
for more than 47 years, raising funds to fulfill a
variety of hospital and healthcare needs, including
education scholarships. It was only a little over
one year ago that the Auxiliary completed an
amazing five year pledge of $450,000 for the

T
en-year-old Melissa Epifano, a Banks
Elementary student, already knows firsthand the tragedy of losing a parent—her
father died when she was just seven years old.
But now, she and her classmates are working to
save others from suffering a similar fate. They
were on hand to present the money they raised
through a special cookie sale to help commence
the sixth annual C.A.T. Walk & Fun Run.
Melissa and her classmate, Logan Wilmoth,
rallied a group of their friends from Banks
Elementary to bake and sell pink-frosted
cookies to raise money for breast cancer
programs.
I
n 2006, more than 5,000 people in
Washington County were diagnosed with
cancer. On July 4, 2006, a record 725
friends, relatives, neighbors, and survivors
took to the streets of Hillsboro with a common
goal—to run the disease out of town!
Funds raised by the sixth annual C.A.T. (Cancer
Awareness & Treatment) Walk & Fun Run
support the Tuality Healthcare Cancer Initiative,
which brings the latest cancer education,
treatment and support to our community.

Digitally aided mammography screenings
Fully integrated breast health services
Oregon’s only mobile mammography vehicle
State-of-the-art radiation treatment
The latest in brain tumor removal
Smoking-cessation programs
Prostate cancer screenings
Peer support programs for all cancers.
Organized by the Tuality Healthcare
Foundation, the C.A.T. Walk expanded in 2006
with great results. In addition to the traditional
5K Walk, a 5K “fun run” was added, increasing
attendance by 75 people. Kids were able to
participate in the festivities as
well with their very own “Kid’s
Dash!” Representatives from
local law enforcement agencies
taught children how to search
the Internet safely, and the local
fire department allowed kids to
explore a fire truck.
Following the event, cancer
survivors boarded the Tuality
Healthcare C.A.T. Walk float for
the Hillsboro Rotary Club Fourth
of July Parade.
More than $12,000 was raised at
the 2006 C.A.T. Walk, bringing
the total funds collected since the first event
in 2001 to approximately $300,000. To help
continue the fundraising efforts of event walkers
and runners, please consider making a donation
to the Tuality Healthcare Foundation Cancer
Initiative. Just call 503-681-1170 or go on-line
to www.tualityfoundation.org.
Start training now—the 2007 C.A.T. Walk
& Fun Run is coming up again on July 4!
Students from Banks Elementary, who sold cookies to
raise money for breast cancer programs, present a check
to Dick Stenson, president & CEO, Tuality Healthcare,
and Catherine Crooker, former director, Foundation &
External Affairs, during the 2006 C.A.T. Walk & Fun
Run on July 4.
Since her father passed away, Melissa has
connected with other children who have lost
their mothers to breast cancer through a special
support group for kids. And through her
experiences, Melissa became determined to do
something to help.

Royal Treatment Bestowed on
‘Royal Tuality’ Guests
An elegant cruising experience.
O
n Jan. 27, 2007, more than 200 people
boarded The Royal Tuality and “set
sail,” raising more than $48,000 at the
22nd annual Dinner Dance. The cruise-themed
fundraiser, hosted by the Tuality Healthcare
Foundation, was a black-tie affair complete
with food, entertainment and dancing.
The evening began with a cocktail-and-hors
d’oeuvres reception. Guests mingled with one
another while listening to the “Caine O’Brien
Jazz Trio” featuring lead singer Caine O’Brien,
Griff O’Brien and Dick Stenson, Tuality’s
president and CEO, on bass.
Following a heartfelt toast by Denzil Scheller,
chairman, board of directors, everyone moved
into the “Grand Ballroom” for the evening’s
main festivities. Area high-school students
served a decadent meal prepared by Jake’s
Catering.
Following dinner, Cece Clitheroe made her
debut as director of the Tuality Healthcare
Foundation. Clitheroe expressed her
excitement about her new role with the
Foundation and gratitude to all of Tuality
Healthcare’s generous donors.
For the third year, the local band “design”
created a festive mood fit for dancing with their
upbeat vocal style and fun stage antics.
With the lively evening winding down, the
Royal Tuality docked at its final port-of-call.
The cruise would not have been possible
without the hard work and creativity of
“co-captains” Darlene Ditsworth and Marggi
McKinney, and the amazing “cruise directors”
who made up the steering committee:
Lila Ashenbrenner
Dot Constant
Linda Gratteri

The Tuality Healthcare Foundation Board of
Directors would like to extend its gratitude to
the sponsors and guests who made the event a
tremendous success.

Minnie Jones Coy was a true pioneer. In an age still dominated
by men and with only a fifth-grade education, Minnie accepted
the challenge of establishing a much-needed hospital in western
Washington County. She had the courage and the will to open a
medical facility, to attract medical doctors, and to become involved
with virtually every aspect of running her hospital, all without the
benefit of any medical, legal, financial or business training. Largely
due to Minnie’s determination and spirit, what began in a modest
two-story home grew to become Tuality Healthcare.
As members of the Minnie Jones Coy Society, we honor you, like
Minnie, for your leadership, compassion and commitment to Tuality.
Thank you for following in Minnie’s footsteps and helping us to meet
today’s challenges in providing high-quality care to the community.

Dr. A.O. Pitman, known to his friends and
colleagues as “Arch” or “Archie,” joined the
Jones Hospital staff in 1930. As one of the
town’s leading physicians, Dr. Pitman worked
hand-in-hand with Minnie to care for the
community.
After Minnie’s death, Dr. Pitman led the
physician group through the challenging
process of establishing Tuality as a non-profit,
community hospital. Dr. Pitman and his
colleagues had the wisdom to recognize the
importance of Tuality to the community, and
they took vital steps to assure its survival as
an independent, locally controlled hospital.
As members of the Dr. A.O. Pitman Club,
we thank you for your dedication and
determination in helping us assure our
future as one the few remaining, successful,
independent non-profit hospitals in Oregon.

Tribute Gifts
Contributors to the 2006
Honor and memorial gifts are contributions that honor
a friend or family member on a special occasion or pay
tribute to the memory of a loved one. Many patients
and families feel a special gratitude for the care they
received at Tuality Healthcare; a gift in honor is a
meaningful way to thank caregivers and show regard
for the work they do.

Challenge Shows Support for
‘Building a Healthier Community’ Campaign
I
n 2006, the Tuality Healthcare Foundation
launched the “Building a Healthier
Community” Campaign to help ensure that
Tuality Healthcare continues to provide the topquality patient care for residents of Washington
County and beyond. The $1 million goal
will allow us to purchase state-of-the-art
equipment and to maintain quality educational
programming.
As a show of support for the campaign, the
Tuality Healthcare Foundation Board of
Directors issued a challenge to members of the
community. Money given to the
“Building
a Healthier
Community”
ampaign
y new
onors will
e matched—
llar for
llar—up to
00,000.
“This is a great opportunity and a huge challenge
for Tuality,” said Cece Clitheroe, director,
Foundation & External Affairs. “Educating
people about the importance of a cause they
are unfamiliar with is much more difficult than
asking for funding from a long-time supporter.
However, we really need to increase our donor
base if we want to sustain a high level of giving
well into the future. This is a chance to do
that.”
A “new donor” is defined as an individual or
corporation who has not given a gift to the
Foundation in the last five years. It does not
include those whose only gift to the Foundation
has been as a participant in the annual C.A.T.
Walk or a sponsor of an individual C.A.T.
Walker, outside foundation grants, or
employee gifts.
Added Clitheroe, “Our Board is truly
committed to Tuality. This challenge gift proves
it. We really appreciate that level of support.”
To contribute to the “Building a Healthier
Community” campaign, contact Cece Clitheroe
at 503-681-1617, [email protected],
or visit the Foundation Website at
www.tualityfoundation.org.
Welcome New
Board Member
T
he Tuality Healthcare Foundation would
like to welcome Gwynne Anne Pitts to
its Board of Directors.
Gwynne continues to serve her family’s interest
and dedication to Tuality Healthcare. Her
mother-in-law, Jane
Kaye Pitts, was a
long-time nurse and
educator at Tuality.
The Jane Kaye Pitts
Scholarship is one
way that family,
friends and donors
can support Tuality
Healthcare. Charles
Pitts, Sr., served on the
Foundation’s Board of
Directors until 2006.
Gwynne was a valuable
member of the 2007 Dinner Dance Steering
Committee. In addition to her service to
Tuality Healthcare, Gwynne is a member of
the City of Hillsboro Parks Commission and
volunteers with a number of community
organizations. She is an independent
manufacturer representative and mother of two.
