The Conterno name was established with the 1920 vintage by Giacomo Conterno, who set out to produce wines capable of longevity in bottle as opposed to many wines at the time, which were sold in cask or demijohn destined for early consumption. For many years Giacomo, and then his son Giovanni, made wine from purchased grapes however when growers began bottling their own wines they realised that they needed to secure an outstanding parcel of fruit for continued supply and purchased the “Cascina Francia” vineyard located in Serralunga in 1974. Soon after this, Giacomo and Giovanni stopped purchasing fruit and relied solely on the approximately 5 Ha Cascina Francia vineyard for their fruit. We will be offering two wines, the 2008 Giacomo Conterno Cascina Francia Barolo and the 2005 Giacomo Conterno Monfortino Barolo Riserva. Stylistically, both of the wines are fermentated on skins for 3-­‐4 weeks in wooden vats with the Barolo spending four years in botti (large, old oak casks) and Monfortino Riserva spending approximately seven years in botti. 2008 Giacomo Conterno Barolo – Offer Price $255 (RRP $320) “The 2008 Barolo Cascina Francia possesses gorgeous inner perfume, layers of sublime fruit and fabulous overall balance. Plums, dark cherries and licorice are followed by darker notes of graphite and tar as the wine opens up in the glass. Today, the 2008 is much less expressive than it has been the many times I have tasted it from barrel. It will be interesting to see how the 2008 develops and whether it puts on weight or remains more of a mid-­‐
weight, gracious Barolo. Either way, it is fabulous. Anticipated maturity: 2018-­‐2048.” – 95+ Points (Antonio Galloni, The Wine Advocate, www.erobertparker.com). 2005 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva – Offer Price $740 (RRP $880) “A rich, sensual tapestry of dark plums, cherries, smoke, incense, tar and licorice emerges from the 2005 Barolo Riserva Monfortino. Exotic, rich and layered, the 2005 boasts gorgeous depth and a sensual enveloping personality. I am quite amazed at how the 2005 has developed since I last tasted it, in November 2011. The once-­‐firm tannins have never been more elegant than they are today. That said, as good as the 2005 is, it doesn’t quite have the thrill factor of the very best vintages.
