Summer 2014:
A time of challenge and of unrest.

Staff
As we move into this 17th season, we cannot help but
feel a little dispirited. Financial struggles are usually
the most pressing issues as we undertake the incredible - presenting another season of Admission Free
Shakespeare. But this season is different. In April, we
lost a key member of our team to illness - long-time
webmaster, administrator and one of the triumvirate
that is SBTS – Katie Price.

Since 1999, Katie was a rock to Lisa and then also to
Suzanne, providing clarity, patience, creativity and
buckets of wry humor. Over the years, volunteers and
company members all got to know Katie and her sardonic wit. (She was never one
to suffer fools gladly.) Our patrons saw her work on a regular basis, but didn’t know
it. She kept our website ever-changing. Those email blasts you received - they
came from Katie. You may have heard her voice on the other end of the phone. She
was the one who responded to questions about the website, Decadent Dining orders, schedule, locations and what to bring to the show. If you loved our King John
in 2013, you have Katie to thank, because she pestered Lisa for years to produce it!

If you attended any show at Little Fish Theatre, you likely exchanged emails and
text messages with her or actually met Katie when she was House Managing. If you
came to our Shakespeare Birthday Tea, you checked in with Katie and her buddy
Margaret Sullivan at the reception counter and, hopefully, you were lucky enough
to sit at their table for some lively conversation! To others, she was mother, wife,
sister, daughter, aunt, mother-in-law, artist, collaborator and friend. Sometimes
“Katie” and other times “Kaite”.
Our thoughts now filled with the loss of a loved one and the disorder resulting, we
return to two plays whose themes may provide us (and our audiences) illumination,
as well as entertainment: Hamlet – an examination of mortality, self and action,
and A Midsummer Night’s Dream – the restoration of the natural order through love,
creativity and harmony.

Fill the GAP
The difference between what the show actually costs to present per night and what cities are able to offer us as a stipend are
widely different. The cities who are able to offer us a stipend are
usually able to offer us anywhere between $500 to $3000 a performance. Some cities have zero funding but we love the park
and the audience so we book a performance there anyway, and
look to the community for support. This creates what we call
“The Gap”.
We still have a long way to go to make our budget this year.
Please help us pay for the productions we’re so passionate
about presenting for you, your family and friends by making a
donation today.
Donate and become a member of our BIG FISH family:
FREE IS NOT FREE
Without ticket income, we must rely on grants, merchandise
sales and donations to raise the funding needed to make these
performances possible.
How Much Would Make a Difference?
If we received just $10 from each audience member, we’d
reach our financial goal. Every donation, big or small, makes a
difference.

Synopsis
The Duke of Athens, Theseus, announces that he will marry Hippolyta, the
Queen of the Amazons. This causes one of his subjects, Egeus, to complain
that his headstrong daughter Hermia has refused to marry his choice of suitors,
Demetrius, because she is in love with Lysander. The Duke pronounces that
Hermia must marry Demetrius or choose between death or joining a convent.
Lysander and Hermia run off to the forest, with plans to go on from there to
a neighboring land and be married. Hermia’s friend Helena, however, has
designs on Demetrius and tells him of the plan in hopes of winning his favor.
Demetrius loves Hermia, so he follows the lovers to the forest, with Helena pursuing him. There they encounter the King and Queen of the Fairies, Oberon
and Titania, who are in the middle of a quarrel. The fairies decide to use a love
potion to make Demetrius return Helena’s affection. Meanwhile, a troupe of
players enters the forest and provides Oberon, who is still angry with Titania,
the opportunity to play a cruel joke on her. A case of mistaken identities and
misplaced affection ensues, leading to much hilarity. Will Lysander and Hermia be married? Will Demetrius find love with Helena? And will Oberon and
Titania reconcile? Follow this play to its wacky conclusion and see!

Old King Hamlet has died. His brother has become king and married his
widow, Gertrude. After the wedding, Laertes, son of courtier Polonius, departs
for France, warning his sister Ophelia against getting too romantically involved
with Prince Hamlet. Hamlet’s friend Horatio, having seen the ghost of Old King
Hamlet along with sentries Marcellus and Bernardo, decide to tell Hamlet and
agree to meet on the battlements to watch for the Ghost. The Ghost appears
to Hamlet and tells him that he was murdered by Claudius and asks his son to
revenge his death. Hamlet swears vengeance and his friends swear secrecy
as Hamlet decides to feign madness while he tests the veracity of the Ghost’s
revelations. Claudius and Polonius use Ophelia to spy on Hamlet, seeking
a reason for Hamlet’s sudden strange behavior. Claudius, determining that
it is not love that has caused Hamlet’s behavior, summons Hamlet’s friends
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and asks them to find the cause of Hamlet’s
melancholy. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern hire a group of travelling actors to
cheer him up. Hamlet rehearses with the players and selects a play for them
to perform which includes scenes close to the circumstances of the old king’s
death. At the performance Hamlet observes Claudius’ reaction. Claudius is so
incensed by the performance that he stops the play and storms out. Hamlet is
summoned to his mother’s closet, and on the way, sees Claudius attempting to
pray. Hamlet thinks about killing Claudius then, before he realizes that killing
him in the act of prayer would send his soul to heaven, rather than to the hell
he deserves. He continues to his mother’s room, where he is being observed
by Polonius. When he upbraids his mother and she becomes afraid, Polonius
cries out for help, and Hamlet kills him, thinking he is Claudius. Hamlet tells his
mother that he is only feigning madness. After a chase, Hamlet is captured and
send to England. On the way, he discovers Claudius’ plan to have him killed,
and outwits him, boarding a pirate ship, and sending Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to their deaths in his stead. During Hamlet’s absence, Ophelia goes
mad as a result of her father’s death, and she is drowned. Hamlet returns to
Denmark and meets Horatio in the graveyard. During their conversation with
a gravedigger, the court arrives to bury Ophelia. Hamlet and Laertes confront
each other over Ophelia’s body. Claudius arranges a duel between Laertes and
Hamlet at which Claudius has plotted for Hamlet to die either on a poisoned
rapier or from poisoned wine. The plan goes wrong and both Laertes and
Hamlet are wounded, while Gertrude unwittingly drinks from the poisoned
cup. Hamlet kills Claudius and Horatio is left to explain the truth to the rest of
the world.

Thank You
These businesses and individuals have helped
make this season possible by making a financial
contribution. They are the BIG FISH in our little
sea. Shakespeare by the Sea is honored to have
earned their faith in our productions and hope that
we make them proud to be a part of our family.
Without them, we wouldn’t have made it to our
17th season.
Funds raised through the BIG FISH campaign are
used to cover the costs of creating the production
-- from directors and designers to the tour truck,
props, costumes, and our amazing sets.
BIG FISH dollars help keep Shakespeare by the Sea
admission-free.
Why are donors called Big Fish?
Back in 2002 Lisa Coffi and Jenny Myers were developing Shakespeare by the
Sea’s individual and corporate giving levels and perks. They researched what
other Shakespeare theatre companies were doing and noted that most carried
a theme, like “Juliet’s Bower” or “Hamlet’s Haven”. There were also names like
“Producer’s Circle” or “Spotlights”. Realizing that SBTS was just one of 800 or
so theatre companies in LA, we wanted to set ourselves apart. Also, as a newly
launched endeavor in a city rich with culture, we felt like guppies in an ocean.
After a few hours of going back and forth with some very stiff and staid sounding names, we started joking around about asking people to become Big Fish in
our little sea of Shakespeare in the South Bay. We decided to go for it and came
up with a slew of fish varieties that corresponded to the size of donations. Thus,
our first “Become a Big Fish” campaign was born and it’s been with us ever since.
Large or small - all our donors are Big Fish in our eyes!
