Welcome to Starry, Starry Night, Centrum’s
festive 42nd Anniversary Gala!
Please don’t forget to purchase tickets for your opportunity to win a seven day cruise on Holland America! One
lucky winner will walk away tonight with this trip of a
lifetime.
While we think of our sparkling artist communities, yearround, as our constellations, tonight you are our stars! Our
talented performers and participants guide our actions
and motivate us in our long-term mission to stay on course
in delivering our unrivaled programs. With your support,
we bring multiple generations together to celebrate our
nation’s shared heritage and traditions.
This evening is also the result of the hard work, dedication and commitment of nearly 100 volunteers led by our
2015 Gala co-chairs, Jo Ann Bussa and Gigi Callaizakis.
Please join us in thanking them, their volunteer committee
members, our most generous presenting sponsor, Kitsap
Bank, auctioneer Laura Michalek—and all of our Board
(especially Cindy McBride!) and staff as we celebrate our
achievements together!
With your generous and thoughtful help tonight, you’ll
ensure that Centrum’s programs will continue to positively
change lives. We are here to celebrate 42 years of extraordinary enrichment.
Thank you all for your continued support, and here’s
to everlasting years of life-changing programs at
Centrum!
Tonight’s Gala is a chance for you to show your support of
Centrum and its mission. We encourage you to bid generously; motivated by knowing that 100% of what you bid
helps Centrum and the thousands of workshop students
and adults that we serve.
We are especially thrilled to share our evening with a special talent from the Chicago area and a former high-school
participant in Jazz Port Townsend, Alexis Lombre. Alexis’
story moves us on so many levels, and we’re proud to see
her flourish in her first year of college this fall.
Tonight we reflect upon these 42 years with gratitude
to all those who brought us to where we are today. We
also look forward to the incredible potential of Centrum’s
on-going programs and the possibility of new and exciting
ventures. With your help this evening, Centrum will fulfill
its potential and continue to offer transformative creative
experiences for next year and beyond.
This gala is particularly important to emerging artists,
young and old, who cannot otherwise afford to experience
what we offer without financial assistance. Your special
participation in tonight’s auction and “Fund-a-Need” segment supports our annual programs and scholarships for
these artists.

AUCTIONEER
GALA MUSICIAN
Nurtured by programs
sponsored by the Jazz
Institute of Chicago since elementary
school, young jazz pianist
Alexis Lombre is making
her way onto Chicago’s
jazz scene. A student of
pianists Steve Million
and the iconic Willie Pickens, she has performed
with former Jazz Messengers, guitarist Bobby Broom and alto saxophonists, Bobby Watson and Donald Harrison; the Corey Wilkes
Quintet; pianist and Ravinia Festival CEO, Welz Kauffman, and with
drummer, Charles “Rick” Heath IV. Alexis has performed around the
city as a four-time Ravinia Jazz Scholar; a former student in the CPS
Advanced Arts-Gallery 37 Jazz program that is partnered with the
Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz; as a representative of the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s Jazz Links Student Council and, as the leader of
the Alexis Lombre Trio/Quartet. She did all this while completing her
senior year at Whitney M. Young Magnet High school.
Fundraising
Auctioneer
Laura Michalek still relies
on the endurance and discipline she possessed when
at the age of 15, she was
the first female winner of
the Chicago Marathon.
While Ms. Michalek has hardly missed a day of running since then, it’s
this intention to excel at what she loves that is most evident. “To me
Auctioneering is about giving a lot of yourself, before and during the
event, in a way that most folks wouldn’t expect.” Her style, fundraising insight, and commitment to her clients, and their mission, not only
sets her apart, but has created a career beyond Ms. Michalek’s wildest dreams. “I’ve always been deeply interested in how non-profits I
care about are going to sustain themselves, so it is nothing less than a
thrill to know I can personally and professionally be part of that.” For
15 years prior to becoming a full time Fundraising Professional, Ms.
Michalek owned and operated several nationally recognized vintage
modern furniture stores in Seattle. “My critical eye, intuition, and energy level has been pretty consistent all these years, so whenever I
set out to do something, it’s the same set of skills, just a slightly more
developed new chapter.” As the youngest winner in the history of the
Chicago Marathon, it has not been lost on Ms. Michalek that this experience informed her whole life. “When I start Auctioneering, it’s like
being in the starting block all over again, and I still set out to win, however this time it’s for the organization I’m representing.”
Alexis performed solo, the National Anthem, opening the main stage
for the final day of the 35th Annual Chicago Jazz Festival for the Jimmy Heath Quintet, Robert Glasper Experiment and Donald Harrison
Quintet. As bandleader of The Alexis Lombre Trio/Quartet she has
also performed around Chicago in the City of Chicago’s “Made in Chicago Jazz Series” in Millennium Park, the Hyde Park Jazz Festival, the
Bucktown Art Festival’s New Jazz Roots Stage, the Hyde Park Jazz
Society’s Sundays at Room 43, the Trinity UCC Jazzapalooza Jazz
Festival, the University of Chicago’s David & Reva Logan Center for
the Arts’ Third Tuesday Jazz Series and, in the “Charles Heath Presents: Jazzin on the SouthSide” series.
JOEL ROGERS PHOTOGRAPHY
Joel Rogers is a Seattle/Port Townsend-based stock photographer,
photojournalist and author who has spent 31 years photographing
and writing about adventure travel, outdoor sports, world trade and
environmental themes. Joel specializes in writing and photographing
books including the award-winning The Hidden Coast, Coastal Adventures from Alaska to Mexico by WestWinds Press, British Columbia
- Vancouver by Insight Guides, Watertrail, The Hidden Path through
Puget Sound by Sasquatch Books, and Seattle by Graphic Arts Center.
Alexis was one of two inaugural recipients of the 2014 Ken Chaney
Memorial Scholarship to attend summer jazz camps. She also received the Luminarts Cultural Foundation’s 2014 Jazz Improvisation Competition’s People Choice Award and the 2nd Place Award
for High School Honorees; the Individual 3rd Place “2014 Heroes In
the ‘Hood” Award, given to Chicago teenagers making a difference in
their community; and the Jazz Institute of Chicago’s 2012-13 Kiewit-Wang Mentorship Award for private study with jazz pianist, Willie
Pickens.
Joel will be taking arrival photos and candid shots at the Gala.
Post-gala, go to www.centrum.org to view the results and download
your favorite images.
Alexis was awarded a scholarship to attend Centrum’s Jazz Port
Townsend in 2014 and 2015. She’ll share her story with us tonight.

CENTRUM PROGRAMS
Port Townsend
Writers’
Conference
Voice Works
Erin Belieu,
Artistic Director
There is nothing quite as personal as using one’s own voice to express
music. Voice Works celebrates singing – at every level – as a means of
building community and honoring musical traditions. The workshop
draws exceptional faculty as well as participants from throughout
the U.S. This year, Voice Works featured Jennifer Scott and Pharis
Romero, from British Columbia; Pamela Bertoli, La Familia Govea,
and Moira Smiley from California; Cathy Jordan from Ireland; Cedric
Watson from Louisiana; Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms from Oregon; Elizabeth LaPrelle from Virginia; and Laurel Bliss, Casey MacGill
and Eli West from Washington. The annual polka dot dance and live
simulcast of our summer-opening concert on KPTZ make this week
something special!
Since 1974, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference has provided
writers of all levels with rigorous craft instruction and egalitarian
community in a nurturing environment. Whether writers come to
create new work, to rethink and revise existing work, or whether
they simply desire to be refreshed and renewed in the writing life, the
Port Townsend Writers’ Conference is the central heart of the Pacific
Northwest literary scene.
In 2015, the Port Townsend Writers’ Conference returned to its legendary ten-day model, which was in place from 1974 to 2004. Artistic Director Erin Belieu, Luis Urrea, Lisa Norris, Joseph Stroud, Kim
Addonizio, Gary Copeland Lilley, Jimmy Kimbrell, Skip Horack, Pam
Houston, Claire Davis and others transformed the inspirational environment of Fort Worden into a supportive, craft-oriented community
built around helping each writer take the next step or steps in their
writing life.
The Festival
of American
Fiddle Tunes
Jazz Port
Townsend
John Clayton,
Artistic Director
Suzy Thompson,
Artistic Director
This year’s Festival represented a multiplicity of styles from three different countries and nine regions of the United States. What a way to
spend the week - living, learning, and jamming with masters of a wide
variety of fiddling styles and, most importantly, being in community
with the bearers of fiddle traditions. Artistic Director Suzy Thompson drew more than 30 faculty members to the workshop, including
Kristian Bugge, Morten Alfred Hoirup, and Sonnich Lydom from Denmark; Kinnon and Betty Lou Beaton from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia;
Lisa Ornstein, Andre Marchand and Normand Miron from Quebec;
and and Louisiana Cajuns Anya Burgess, Kristi Guillory and Christine
Balfa and friends. They brought to life the art and the soul of community-based fiddle music.
After 39 years, Jazz Port Townsend is still going strong as one of
the oldest and most respected Jazz workshops in the nation. Artistic Director John Clayton orchestrated a week-long opportunity
for participants to meet other excellent musicians, soak up a week
of jazz in a seaside paradise, and leave as a better musician. In 2015
we welcomed an all-star faculty led by Benny Green, George Cables,
Terell Stafford, Regina Carter, Matt Wilson, Romero Lubambo, Sachal
Vasandani and many more. Centrum continues to draw the greats to
this workshop and to provide life-changing educational experiences
to participants.

Acoustic Blues
Festival
Centrum
Artist
Residencies
Jerron Paxton,
Artistic Director
For over 30 years, since 1980, artists from around the world have
come to Centrum seeking the opportunity to retreat into nature
and focus on their art while having the resources to support their art
and to meet their daily needs. Open to individuals or groups in all art
genres, this program provides an ideal location of tranquility and natural beauty nestled in Fort Worden and yet has accessibility to amenities at the park and in downtown Port Townsend.
New Artistic Director Jerron Paxton invited players from regions
where pre-war country blues originated—Piedmont, the Delta, Mississippi Hill Country, New Orleans, Texas and more—to the largest
country blues gathering in the nation. Alice Stuart, Andy Cohen,
Beareather Reddy, Cyd Smith, Gene Taylor, Jerie Choi, Lightnin’
Wells, Michael Jerome Browne, Phil Wiggins, Samuel James, The
Sherman Holmes Project with Brooks Long and Cora Harvey Armstrong, Terry Waldo, Tom Feldmann and others offered an immersion
in the African American history and traditions from which blues has
grown. Capacity crowds enjoyed a Rag, Blues and Zydeco Dance,
Acoustic Blues Showcase and Blues in the Clubs.
Centrum is now in the second year of its initiative to support artists
at the beginning of their career trajectory. The Emerging Artists Residency is a month-long residency with housing, studio space and a
stipend provided to 6 visual artists. The month-long residency takes
place October 19-November 16, 2015.
Finalists are selected through an invitation only process. Centrum’s
residency program manager, Martha Worthley, contacts educators
from throughout the Northwest, Alaska and Canada to nominate artists who have graduated from a fine arts program within the last five
years. The nominated artists are then invited to apply.
Young
Artists
Project
Centrum’s Young Artists Project (YAP) offers dynamic creative experiences for elementary, middle and high school students. The Young
Artists Project brings professional artist faculty to present workshops, exhibits, and performances that engage young artists in the
world of arts and ideas, promote creative risk-taking; and teach best
professional practices. These vital, contemporary artists guide and
inspire young participants to immerse themselves in the arts—practicing, listening, conversing, drawing, sculpting, painting, dancing, performing, writing, and reading—while in residence at Fort Worden’s
barracks. The workshops include Explorations (Grades 7-9); Tales,
Texts and Theater for Blue Heron Middle School (Grade 7); Water
World (Grades 5-6); Advanced High School Writers’ Studio (Grades
9-12); and DANCE This! at Centrum (Grades 9-12).

CENTRUM PROGRAMS
Port Townsend
Chamber Music
Festival
Brazilian
Choro
Lucinda Carver,
Artistic Director
The Brazilian musical style of Choro represents the coming together
of European melodic and harmonic traditions with African rhythms
and sensibilities. Emerging in Brazil in the middle of the nineteenth
century, Choro is a cousin of jazz, with a sense of yearning that is
often described as a “sweet lament.” Choro is a great way for both
jazz and classically oriented musicians to meet on common ground.
There are written charts with lovely and lively melodies accessible to
any competent player. There’s also room for improvisation, and in a
vein that’s a great way for classical musicians to expand their skills in
this. In 2015 we welcomed Anat Cohen, Dudu Maia, three-time Latin
Grammy nominee Jovino Santos Neto, Douglas Lora, Alexandre Lora
and Eduardo Neves as artist faculty and featured performers!
Under the guidance of Artistic Director Lucinda Carver, Port
Townsend Chamber Music Festival exists to showcase the brilliant
talent of many of the world’s finest classical artists along with the top
echelon of most promising young talents in the field today. The intimacy and warmth of the Joseph F. Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden
provides an ideal venue for our dynamic performances and master
classes. Following the huge success of our inaugural residency with
the Enso Quartet in 2015, Centrum is excited to welcome the Calder
Quartet as “Ensemble in Residence” for our 2016 workshop. Two
emerging quartets and two accomplished and aspiring pianists will
be invited as participants for this unique and immersive experience.
Come and experience chamber music at its highest level.
Port Townsend
Ukulele Festival
Marianne Brogan,
Artistic Director
Now in its third consecutive year of sold-out events, the Centrum
Ukulele Festival rocks! Artistic Director Marianne Brogan and 20
world-class faculty—Del Rey, Brook Adams, Casey MacGill, Francis
Doo, The Canote Brothers, Jim D’Ville, Stu Fuchs, Heidi Swedberg,
Daniel Ward, Sarah Maisel and Craig Chee, Gerald Ross, Joel Eckhaus, Ralph Shaw, Jason Arimoto, Nani Edgar, Cathy Fink and Marcy
Marxer and Aaron Keim—are feeding the huge demand among uke
players from all parts of the USA. So good we had to do it twice in
2015!

Auction Rules 2015
11. Centrum has attempted to describe and catalog all items correctly, “as is, where is.” Centrum neither warrants nor represents, and in no event shall be responsible for the correctness
of descriptions, authorship, or condition of items.
CENTRUM GALA AUCTION GENERAL RULES
1. Unless otherwise noted, all goods and services must be claimed
and used within one year of the auction date.
2. Upon entry, each guest receives a bid card. To bid in the silent
auction, write your bid number clearly on the silent auction bid
form. To bid in the live auction, hold your bid card up high, with
the number toward the auctioneer. By bidding in the live or silent
auction each bidder agrees to these auction rules.
12. Each person issued a bid number (bidder) assumes all risks and
hazards related to the auction and items obtained at the auction
and agrees to hold harmless all parties connected with the auction from any liability arising therefrom.
3. A bid acknowledged in the live auction by the auctioneer is a legal contract to purchase the item. In the silent auction, designation by the silent auction official of the bid you have written is a
legal contract to purchase that item.
SILENT AUCTION
1. B
id by writing your bid number on the form opposite the amount
you want to bid. We ask you to press firmly, as you will be making
two copies. The next bidder must bid the next higher amount to
be successful.
4. Winning bidders may pay for their items at the conclusion of the
live auction. If you sign up for “Express Pay” at the beginning of
the evening, purchases will be charged to your account. Payment
in full is mandatory at the auction.
2. You do not have to take the next available bid amount, but
may skip ahead to find the amount you really want to bid.
5. Except for “per person” bidding, auction items are awarded to
one purchaser only. A purchaser wishing to split the payment for
an auction item must collect individual payments from the other
bidders sharing in the cost and present them to the cashiers at
the time of payment for the item.
3. To ensure your purchase of an item, write your bid number
opposite the amount labeled “GUARANTEED PURCHASE”
and you own the item. Bidding on that item is concluded.
4. You may bid on any silent auction item until the section is closed.
Bidding will close at the time announced or posted.
6. All purchases are final and there will be no exchanges or refunds
on items unless otherwise noted.
LIVE AUCTION
You may bid in the Live Auction by holding your bid card up high, with
the number toward the auctioneer. Either the auctioneer or bid spotter can accept your bid. Please note that some items, for large groups,
will be bid PER PERSON. Each couple has two bid cards, and you must
raise a card for each person bidding to attend one of these events.
7. We will gladly accept your payment by currency, check, Visa or
MasterCard, but Centrum benefits if you pay in cash or by check.
Please make your check payable to Centrum.
8. Centrum reserves the right to add or withdraw, without notice,
items to or from the auction.
9. Purchaser may claim the certificate(s) from the certificate table
and pick up items from the designated volunteers in each section by showing the “Paid” receipt. Certificates will be delivered
to “Express Pay” guests.
10. Reservations for trips, dinners and vacation accommodations must be mutually arranged unless otherwise noted.
