All the tools you need to become a compelling, literate, and persuasive
speaker, in a course developed at Harvard and Brown Universities.

The Kenyon Institute offers a seminar for
students and adults on the craft of speechwriting
and public speaking.
Your success in the boardroom or courtroom can depend on your skill as a
communicator. It is one thing to write a speech—and another to persuade
and inspire by using all the skills of reasoning, emotional appeal, organization, and presentation to connect with your audience. In this intensive
two-day weekend workshop, you will master the fundamentals of constructing and delivering a compelling, memorable message, with special
attention to the public speaking requirements of executives.
Jim Dennen and David Carter have helped make public speaking a
perennial favorite at Harvard and Brown Universities through a lively
interactive curriculum that draws on both contemporary and classical
techniques for the formulation of persuasive arguments. Through short
lectures and participatory exercises, you will learn numerous ways to construct your arguments and build your skills as a public speaker, including
everything from non-verbal communication to effective management
of the post-speech Q&A. While you are learning to give speeches and
perfect your delivery style, you will be learning key features of rhetoric
and persuasion and how to develop arguments, use humor and anecdote
effectively, employ visuals, and land a winning conclusion.
In two intensive class days, you and your new colleagues will each
develop a speech, drawing on techniques presented and discussed in class.
You will learn with your classmates how to make your speech more effective, departing with a video of your presentation, analysis of your work,
and tips for moving forward in the future.

DAVID CARTER
Teaching Assistant, Harvard University
David Carter has taught public speaking at Harvard University and the
Boston & Cambridge Institute, assisting individuals in exploring practical
skills and theoretical approaches to improve their speaking abilities. Carter’s voice movement therapy counseling practice has expanded to include
working with international students and business executives in becoming
more fluent communicators in public presentations. A graduate of London’s Oxford and Cambridge and the Royal Society of Arts, Carter holds
a diploma in voice movement therapy and is an accomplished improvisational actor and director.
JIM DENNEN
Assistant Professor of Drama and Film, Kenyon College
Jim Dennen has taught courses on performance theory and practice, acting, directing, improvisation, documentary filmmaking, public speaking,
and expository writing at UCLA, Brown, and Harvard. His work as a
theater artist and director has been seen in regional theaters and festivals
around the U.S. and abroad. As a filmmaker, Dennen has specialized in
experimental work with live performance and improvisational narrative
development, winning a New Television Award funded by the National
Endowment for the Arts. Recently, he collaborated with designer/educator
Anastasia Congdon and Pritzer Prize-winning architect Wang Shu on a
semester-long experimental workshop at the China Academy of Art in
Hangzhou, exploring the intersection of performance and architecture.

videos of landmark speeches, and discuss critical commentary
about the writing process

DINING AND THE COMMUNITY
You will enjoy three meals daily in Kenyon’s recently restored historic
Peirce Hall, featuring an extensive farm-to-table local foods program.
Each night, Institute participants
will gather for a joint dinner. In
Gambier Village, opportunities range
from fine dining at the Kenyon Inn’s
restaurant and bar to informal fare at
the Village Inn, the Village Deli, and
Wiggin Street Coffee. The full-service
Village Market makes cooking in the
apartment easy, and the Institute will
also host gatherings during the week.

A Community of and for Writers
The Kenyon Playwrights Conference is part of the Kenyon Institute, which
hosts programs for adult professionals seeking greater proficiency and
experience in writing in their chosen fields.
We offer a community with innumerable opportunities for interchange
with fellow writers, not only at readings but also at meals, over coffee or
drinks, or on campus pathways.
A SETTING OF RARE TRANQUILITY
Located among the rolling hills of Central Ohio, Kenyon’s hilltop campus
is considered one of the most beautiful anywhere. On wide shaded
lawns, stately 19th-century halls harmonize with architecturally striking
contemporary buildings. Quiet vantage points offer long views over the
surrounding countryside. Facilities include comfortable seminar rooms
and lounges, modern classrooms, and a range of spaces for readings, presentations, and performances.
The campus is entwined with the charming village of Gambier, where
benches and friendly shops encourage relaxed conversation. In the heart
of the village, you’ll find the Kenyon Bookstore, the post office, a clothing
boutique, a hair salon, eateries, and more. The village and much of the
main campus are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Participants live in Kenyon’s air-conditioned townhouse apartments,
which include private rooms and a
full kitchen and living/dining area
shared with three other workshop
participants. Built in 2011 and 2012,
the townhouses are Kenyon’s newest
and most modern residences, located
just five minutes on foot from the
center of campus. Discounts are
available for double occupancy by two Playwrights Conference participants. See the registration form for details.
RECREATION AND OTHER FACILITIES
Kenyon’s outstanding athletic facilities, including outdoor and indoor
tennis courts, an indoor pool, outdoor and indoor tracks, and a wellequipped fitness room, are open to participants. Cyclists and runners can
take advantage of the scenic 14-mile Kokosing Gap Trail, which crosses
campus. The College also has a 480-acre nature preserve with picnic spots
and 8 miles of hiking trails.
Registration
The cost of the Executive Communication program is $1,200 per person,
which includes course tuition and all instructional materials, a private
room, meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) in Peirce Hall, and receptions.
Discounts are available for individuals sharing a double room (two
twin beds). Please consult the registration form for details. If you are a
local resident who does not need housing and meals, or if you choose to
make your own housing arrangements at the Kenyon Inn, Gambier House,
or other location, you may purchase a tuition-only package for $1,100.
A double room in North Campus Housing shared with a spouse,
roommate, or partner. This option reduces your cost by $50.
Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis beginning November 1, 2015, including a deposit of $500. The balance of your
tuition is due May 16, 2016.
