Agoura Hills
The community’s name was chosen to honor early
settler Pierre Augoure in 1928, but through
misspelling or for ease of pronunciation, the Postal
Service changed it to Agoura, becoming Agoura
Hills with the city’s incorporation. Located in the
Santa Monica Mountain foothills just 30 minutes
from many urban centers, the city sits among oakcovered canyons and rolling hillsides and is just
minutes from ocean beaches.
Visitors who like the great outdoors will enjoy this
“Gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains National
Recreation Area with hiking and biking trails in
over 80 acres, in six parks, ranging from small
neighborhood parks to an equestrian center. The

Thousand Oaks
The name, presumably for the area’s many oak
trees, first appears on a track map in 1923. Today
it is home to Amgen, Inc., the largest
biotechnology company in the world and Ventura
County’s largest private employer. Annually, it is
among the safest small cities in America. The
residents are serious about preserving the ring of
open space surrounding the city, with local and city
groups continuing to buy more land to save it from

Who Saves Who?
In my last publication, I had just lost Jack, my beautiful Golden Retriever.
I received this poem in the mail from a rescue, the “author” unknown.
Before humans die, they write their last Will & Testament, give their home
and all they have, to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do
the same, this is what I’d ask....
To a poor and lonely stray I’d give:
-My happy home.
-My bowl & cozy bed, soft pillows and all my toys.
-The lap, which I loved so much.
-The hand that stroked my fur & the sweet voice which spoke my name.
I’d Will to the sad, scared shelter dog, the place I had in my human’s
loving heart, of which there seemed no bounds.
So, when I die, plese do not say, “I will never have a pet again, for the loss
and pain is more than I can stand.”
Instead, go find an unloved dog, one whose life has held no joy or hope
and give MY place to HIM.
This is the only thing I can give.... The love I left behind.

I was scanning Pet Finder, and found a 17 month golden retriever that had
been hit by a car with a 2 week repaired broken femur and new plate in
his leg looking for a home. BUDDY is his real name. Evan was the name
designated to him by the K9 rescue. Evan’s Disease is what took Jack’s life.
Jack obviously had a plan for me...

Forever Friends - Golden Retriever Rescue
Di Gregorio started to
R uth
foster because she was ready to
finally move on from putting my
own dog down two years ago. Ruth
wanted to build toward having
another dog of my own. Caring for
homeless dogs until they found the
right family sounded like a great
way to do this.
But fostering has become more
than that. Ruth loves that all three
of the dogs she’s fostered so far
started out a little unsure and
frightened but blossomed into
happy, attentive companions in
only a week or so. Seeing them run
around the yard and comfortably
roam around the house when they
used to be timid and unsure of
what was around the corner is a
rewarding feeling.
Fostering has also opened her
eyes to the amount of people that
do this non-stop, daily, at all hours
of the night, with no intention of
getting paid...just for the love of
animals and helping those in need.
Ruth knows she is only a little piece
of the huge machine constantly
turning to save these dogs, but she
is proud to do her part.
She has loved these three dogs,
even if only 10 days at a time. It is
ex-tremely tough to give them up,
but knowing that the forever
families that adopt them will treat
them with just as much love as she
has makes it much easier.
Ruth has needed these dogs in her
life just as much as they've needed
having someone like her in theirs.
Sweetie
Just after Thanksgiving I met some
humans who really wanted my
help. The mommy had serious
visual problems requiring the
assistance of a gentle dog to help
her take walks. Her son was what
humans call "developmentally
disabled" (even though he was
perfect to me) He knew how to talk
gently to me and how to rub my
tummy just the right way and he
didn't even care that I only had
three legs. My new mom lets me
help her with her office work and
my new boy lets me sleep on his
bed at night. At least I have my

Winston
Winston was hit by a truck in front
of an elementary school just as
children were entering for the day.
Severely injured, FFGRR did not
hesitate to rescue him and to pay
fan an expensive medical procedure
- removal of his hip joint. His
family was never located. Caring
students were so worried about
him. They sent cards and letters
and collected money to help
Winston in his recovery. Happily
Winston found his Forever Home
with his foster family who were
unwilling to part with him. After
his recuperation, Winston returned
to the school to meet the children

Cookie
Until taken in by Forever Friends,
Cookie lived a difficult life devoid
of love, kept outside as a breeder
dog and then dumped at the shelter
once she became too old to breed.
By the time she was rescued,
Cookie was in very poor health - a
uterine infection and possible
sepsis, requiring a spay. This
surgery was soon followed by
another to treat entropia, a
condition in which the eyelids roll
inward causing the eyelashes to rub
painfully against the cornea.
Despite the extensive and expensive
medical treatments, Cookie
survived and can be found always
smiling that Golden smile.
We request a family visit for each
potential adopter. It is the best way
to make the match of the right
Golden for the right family. We
always need volunteers who are
willing to visit potential adopters,
talk to them about their
expectations, tell them about
Golden characteristics – how much
dog hair are they really willing to
deal with? Will they take their
adopted Golden to training classes
if necessary, how will they deal with
barking, chewing, housebreaking?
Are they sure they are ready for a
10 to 15 year commitment?
We need volunteers who know
marketing, data base management,
graphics and literature design,
promotion and always the constant
FUND RAISING. Without money
to pay the vet bills we cannot save
those like Sweetie, Winston, and
Cookie.
We welcome your support in
whatever form you chose.
Significance of the Logo
The circle symbolizes the “Forever”
in our name. The high five
symbolizes the “Friends” in our
name. The space between paw and
hand symbolizes the need for our
rescue to bring together the golden
retriever and the new family.
The name of this rescue has a lot of
significance and meaning to those
who believe in this organization.
The logo symbolizes all the hopes
and aspirations that have gone into
its formation.

COMMUNITY GUIDE - SIMI VALLEY
Simi Valley
The name comes from a Chumash Indian word,
shimiji, which refers to the thread-like clouds that
appear sometimes over the valley. Located at the
edge of eastern Ventura County encircled by
beautiful hills, Simi Valley is a haven away from the
congestion of the San Fernando Valley and Los
Angeles County and is consistently rated one of the
safest cities in the nation.
Visitors come by the “busloads” to the home of the
Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum,
which hosts the Air Force One Pavillion.
Corriganville Park is another must-see, once known
for being the backdrop of many western movies and
television shows.
The city is also host to the annual Cajun Festival, a
weekend-long event that showcases New Orleans
Jazz, blues, Cajun and Creole music as well as
authentic N’awlins cuisine from jambalaya to fried
alligator.
Preserving the tradition of the old west, one Simi
Valley neighborhood still provides bridlepaths for
horses instead of sidewalks.

COMMUNITY GUIDE - CAMARILLO, OXNARD
Visitors will enjoy touring the 4.5 acre
Camarillo Ranch. Walk through the richly
restored ranch home and experience the
grandeur of residing in a 6,000 square-foot
house. Old Town is another attraction. You
might not realize it if you’re just whizzing by on
Highway 101, but Old Town is not just the
older commercial strip along Ventura Boulevard
just south of the freeway. This whole area is
really the heart of the old Camarillo “town site”
that was first laid out back in 1910.
Camarillo
The city was named for Juan Camarillo who
purchased the almost 10,000 acre Rancho
Calleguas in 1875 from Jose Pedro Ruiz.
Geographically near Ventura County’s center,
Camarillo is one of the area’s fastest growing
cities with new housing projects bringing more
residents to town.
opportunities. At Channel Islands Harbor and
along the shoreline, boating, kayaking,
sportfishing, surfing and biking are popular
past-times. In downtown, Heritage Square and
the Carnegie Art Museum are two "must see"
cultural attractions. Oxnard also offers two
popular stops on the Ventura County Wine
Trail at Herzog Wine Cellars and Rancho
Ventavo Cellars.
Oxnard
Named for the Henry T. Oxnard family who
developed one of the city's first industries - a
sugar beet factory - the city of Oxnard is
surrounded by some of the richest agricultural
land in the world. Its farming heritage is
celebrated annually at the California Strawberry
Festival in May and the spicy Salsa Festival in
July. As the gateway to Channel Islands
National Park, just 11 miles offshore, Oxnard
offers an abundance of outdoor recreational

COMMUNITY GUIDE - VENTURA
Ventura
The city’s official name of San Buenaventura (Saint
Bonaventure, an Italian theologian) was shortened
to Ventura, reportedly because the full name did not
fit on railroad timetables. It is more generally
assumed that the shorter name was simply more
convenient.
Visitors have many choices. Ventura is home of the
Ventura County Museum of History & Art, site of
the Ventura County Fair, San Buenaventura State
Beach, the Ventura Harbor, Ventura Pier and
Channel Islands National Park. The historic
Mission San Buenaventura is still used for regular
Catholic Church services and is open to the public.

Whale Watching Off The Ventura Coast
Situated along California’s central coast north
of Los Angeles, Ventura is a community that
boasts some of the state’s richest and most
exciting opportunities to view and interact
with nature. Whether you plan to spend the
day whale watching at the Channel Islands
Marine Sanctuary, at the Camino Real Park
for the emergence of the Monarch butterfly, or
bird watching at two of Ventura’s untamed
estuaries, exploring the natural wonder of
Ventura is time well spent.
seals, a multitude of sea birds, and Gray, Blue,
and Humpback Whales. Whales are the largest
animals on earth and they migrate along
north/south routes seasonally. Each year, as
many as 25,000 Gray Whales travel from their
Alaskan feeding grounds to the warm waters
off the coasts of California and Mexico. Gray
Whale watching season begins in December
and ends in June, while Blue and Humpback
Whale watching season lasts from May
through September.
This quintessential California beach town
offers something for any outdoor enthusiast or
anyone looking to walk the road less traveled.
Known as the American Galapagos, the
Channel Islands National Park is comprised of
five of the eight California Channel Islands,
including Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa,
San Miguel, and Santa Barbara. These islands
are home to over 2,000 species of plants and
animals, 145 of which are completely unique
to these islands and not found anywhere else
on earth.
The average length of a Gray Whale is
between 36’ and 50’ and can weigh between
26 and 34 metric tons. These whales lack a
dorsal fin and are a dark charcoal color at
birth, turning to a mottled gray later in life
due to vast numbers of barnacles on their
bodies. During their southern migration, the
whales travel very close to the Channel
Islands, making it easy to view them from the
top of any of the islands. However, this is not
your only option. Island Packers is an official
concessionaire of the Channel Islands National
Park and they offer various whale watching
excursion packages. The trips are narrated by
experienced naturalists and last about three
hours. Call for current pricing.
The biodiversity found on and in the waters
surrounding the Channel Islands National
Park is evidenced by the presence of dolphins,
A brief but awesome look at a couple of Channel Islands’ visitors.
Here are a few helpful tips when going whale
watching:
1. Dress warmly and in layers.
It can get cold out there, and with the ocean
spray and water spouting whales, you may
find yourself unexpectedly wet. Be ready to
shed your wet clothing just in case. And if it
gets warm, you can always shed the extra
clothing.
2. Don’t bring your best camera.
It can get wet on the high sea and you don’t
want to have your camera ruined or your
pictures lost. It’s best to bring a waterproof
disposable camera.
3. Do some research.
It doesn’t hurt to familiarize yourself with
what you will be seeing. Read up on the types
of whales you will be seeing and any other
types of marine life that you may encounter.
The more you know, the more you’ll enjoy.
4. Stay Healthy.
If you get motion or sea sick, bring
something that will help relax you.
Bringing sunscreen is also a good idea. With
the sun’s rays reflecting off the ocean’s
surface, it’s easy to get too
much sun.
