Fall into Winter
As we settle into the cold dark days of winter, I think
back to how much has happened since our last newsletter at
the end of August. One would think that Kirkland is a town
of summer events, but we are just as busy in the fall. The
Chamber staff and our board members, along with hundreds
of volunteers, come out to make our Kirkland Downtown
Association events go off without a hitch. In the fall the
Chamber and the KDA fire up many new events.
September was all about saving the planet while making you look great. Sustainable September and the first
ever Kirkland Fashion Show dominated the most beautiful
month of the year in the great northwest. Brenda Nunes at
Keller Williams, Waste Management, LEED certified architects and Sustainable Environments joined forces to teach
people how to reduce their carbon footprint, recycle what
they can, and encourage a house credit to seal up gaps and
leaks in a typical home. LEED certified homes and buildings
are also featured in tours.
The Kirkland Fashion Show was the culmination of five
months of planning. The Kirkland Chamber feels strongly
that we have to do more to create events that directly
supported our merchants. With downtown’s abundance
of clothing stores, beauty salons, and spas we know that a
Fashion Show can bring attention. It was a smashing success and was tweeted and posted throughout the eastside
as one of the best fashion shows ever. Via Lago, Blue
Luna, Serendipity Consignments, Sweet and Sassy, Seduce,
Hepburn, Lake Street Diamonds, Seattle Thread Company,
and Bella Serena showed off their lines of clothing (along
with doggie fashions from Boo Boo Barkery), to an uproarious crowd of people having the time of their life.
Then we leapt into Oktoberfest, another first time event.
Happily, a deluge of rain and the worst weather of the year
didn’t deter fun-loving locals that love to drink beer while
dancing to oom pah pah music and eating bratwurst. We
wrung out our clothing and two weeks later we were at
Google, hosting the second StartUp Weekend. The first
year this entrepreneur event was a hard sell. That wasn’t
the case this year. We had to turn people away and it was
twice as large as the year before. 150 extremely creative
and competitive people went at it from Friday to Sunday
night producing a new smartphone app or web-based
resource. It was a showcase of talent and geekatude.
Not enough for you? No problem. We’ll throw one
more event together to wrap up the year. The annual
Christmas Tree and Holiday Lights (let’s just call it Kirkland’s Winterfest), brought together over 100 volunteers
to decorate the town with garlands, wreaths and lights,
before a night of live music, dancing, fire-barrels, sled-
ding (yes, we brought in snow), and a
fun party throughout downtown with
temperatures in the teens. It was cold,
but when over 1,000 people get together
to watch a massive tree get lit downtown, the collective body temperatures of
crowds can do wonders.
Whew. That was a lot to jam into 4 months. It all comes
back around again in 2014, but we want to do more. How about
a Blues Festival, Entrepreneur Conference, a Tech City Bowling
Tournament, a Maker’s component of StartUp Weekend? We
can do that. That’s just the way the Greater Kirkland Chamber
of Commerce and the Kirkland Downtown Association rolls.
Broaden Your Influence
Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce members make
amazing things happen for Kirkland businesses and employees. For example, EvergreenHealth provides support for
programs focusing on health. They are also the title sponsor
for the annual awards luncheon recognizing leaders in Kirkland and our annual
Gala Auction. Google sponsors luncheons
for students focused on studying science,
math, engineering and math, and are title
sponsors for the annual StartUp Weekend. Parkplace Center
made the Chamber and KDA office and Visitor Center possible. The Spa at PRO Sports Club made Kirkland Chamber’s
first fashion show come to life.
Our other key sponsors are Waste Management, The
Heathman Hotel, Edward Jones, Woodmark Hotel, Overlake
Medical Center, Frontier Communications, Sterling Bank,
Merrill Gardens, Madison House and Norman and Shinstrom.
They all make amazing things happen while supporting our
local businesses.
In return we provide as much recognition possible through
our web site, the What’s New updates, the quarterly newsletter,
and hang their company banners at every Chamber membership luncheon. We also turn the microphone over to company
leaders to address our Chamber members whenever possible.
We encourage your company to be a part of this special
and invaluable group of business leaders. There are lots of
levels for giving and suggestions on how you want your sponsorship funding recognized. For example, we are looking into
producing an Entrepreneur Conference. Your sponsorship
could make that possible.
If you are interested in being a Greater Kirkland Chamber of Commerce sponsor, contact brucew@kirklandchamber.

Effective marketing combines new
with tried-and-true
Effective
marketing plans
for small business
are increasingly
using a combination of both traditional and newer
channels. Customers have grown
accustomed to crossing easily between
offline and online worlds. By creatively
blending the old with the new, it is
possible to get a bigger bang for your
marketing buck.
Consider using the following ways
to blend social media with traditional
marketing:
Make print a social driver.
Facebook is beginning to supplant a
website as the primary online hub for
many small businesses. Print and other
traditional marketing tools can be
used to drive traffic to your Facebook
page. Put your Facebook address on
brochures, counter cards, posters,
invoices, receipts, menus, coupons and
other printed materials.
Highlight social mentions
in print. You can provide a bridge
from the online world to the offline
world by showcasing what customers are saying about you on sites like
Facebook, Yelp, and Twitter in your
print ads.
Use QR (Quick Response)
Codes in cross-promotions. By
placing a QR code on a printed ad,
flyer, or poster, you can get mobile
phone users who scan it to learn more
about your business and your offers.
Develop an offline promotion with an online benefit.
Kirkland Fashion Night showcased the
large number of shops, boutiques and
salons that are part of the town’s sense
of style and design. Businesses like
these could offer a free makeover and
photo of their customer with the photo
being used on the business’s Facebook
and other social media sites.
Cross-sell your offline and
online efforts. When you use a
marketing channel, mention the other
channels you are using. Your emails, direct mail and print ads should all mention how to find your business on social
media. Conversely, your Facebook page
and tweets should give your customers
a heads up about offers that will be
arriving through traditional channels.
Thanks to our 2013 sponsors.
Contact the Chamber office
to be a sponsor.

Happy New Year to our Greater Kirkland
Chamber of Commerce members!
As we move into 2014 in our lakeside community, the
Board members of your Chamber and Kirkland Downtown
Association are feeling very excited about the planning that
has been taking place to prepare for a great year ahead.
Many of our past events and successes will be replicated, as
we continue to welcome new businesses and new members
into our fold.
In addition to continuing to
grow our past successes, we also
have new plans and initiatives
which are open to your participation.
*Many of our experienced
Board members are continuing,
and we are excited to welcome
several new members who bring
new and unique skillsets to our
group.
*While we continue events
such as Downtown Holiday Decorating and Tree-lighting, the annual Auction, Kirkland Fashion Night Out, Kirkland Summerfest, the 4th of July Festivities, Summer Concerts in Marina
Park, and Start-Up Weekend……….we also have several new
events which we are excited to introduce to Kirkland.
*We continue to grow our presence and our activities
in the waterfront retail neighborhood, while we also plan
for our events and activities to grow in scope to enhance
businesses in the Totem Lake, Juanita, Houghton, Rose Hill
and Yarrow Bay districts.
*We are becoming more involved in education policy,
and what local businesses large and small can do to
enhance the future of our students.
*We continue to monitor public policy happenings in
transportation and education and economic growth, and
will be reporting back to you as the year unfolds.
We are always “Open For Business” with plenty of free
parking at our offices in Kirkland Parkplace. We hope you
will drop by, or email us at [email protected] to
share with us your perspectives and comments about how
to enhance the future of Kirkland businesses.
(We are located between the bagel shop and the
Kirkland Arts Center store…………what better place to be?)

Start It Up in Kirkland
Last year it was, “Start up what? On
a weekend? What are you talking about?”
The response this year was, “Do you still
have space in the Kirkland Startup Weekend?” Just barely, since over 150 people,
double from the first year, applied
and make the second Kirkland Startup
Weekend at Google a huge success. It’s
amazing how word of mouth and social
media can make an event much easier
to market. Having the event at Google
also ramped-up the cool factor of this
new mainstay of the Greater Kirkland
Chamber of Commerce.
There is a lot that happens over
the course of the weekend. The first
night is a party as everyone arrives
and mingles. Beer, food and conversation raises the volume as the energy
ramps up. With Google as our title
sponsor, other sponsors represented
are from INRIX, Xtreme Consulting,
Webtellect, Nytec, and lots of in-kind
support from Reign Labs, Costco, OfficeMax, and others.
Darcy Nothnagle, Public Affairs
and Government Relations Manager
and U.S Representative Suzan DelBene
welcomed everyone. Rep. DelBene
shared her background working at Microsoft and her creation of the start-up
Drugstore.com. State Representative
Cyrus Habib, shared his passion for
technology and how attractive Kirkland
is for start-up companies. The keynote
was given by Bryan Mistele, CEO of
INRIX. He emphasized that determination and persistence was necessary
to get INRIX’s first large investor after
being rejected from investors up and
down the west coast. INRIX is now an
international company valued by all
users of GPS and traffic data.
The mood changes when it’s pitch
time. John Sechrest, an angel investor,
served as the coordinator of the event.
John runs Kirkland’s StartUp Weekend
like a military boot camp demanding excellence and hard work from
all participants. Each participant is
given exactly 60 seconds to pitch their
startup idea. They then take a sheet
of paper, write down their idea, and
tape it to the wall. And so it goes, with
almost 130 pitches. Then everyone
votes on the top 20 ideas and everyone
joins the teams that they will work with
throughout the weekend.
No exaggeration -- they work
morning to night through the weekend.
Mentors, coaches and leaders from
throughout the IT community circulate
to the teams offering advice and
direction. A team rep reports to all
participants every two hours. As the
weekend progresses, teams become
very focused and immersed in working
specific problems and testing the appeal of their start-up idea by twittering
and pitching to facebook friends to get
a “consumers” response. It is exciting
to see coders, engineers, graphic artists, marketing reps and business pros
all collaborating together.
It’s Sunday night and time is up.
Participants present to judges, who are
comprised of individuals that launched
their own startups years ago and know
what has the best potential of going
further. What impresses the observer
is the high quality of the graphics and
home page of each startup company.
Each end product of the weekends
work has merit and an element of
filling a nitch for the consumer or a
specific business. Presentations are
done, and everyone gathers around
the beer keg to calm their nerves and
wait for the judges decisions on the
top three teams. The winners are announced and the top three winners are
encouraged to take their idea to the
marketplace.
US Rep. Suzan DelBene stopped by to encourage the IT Startup participants and
noted the impact on the local and national economy from entreprenurial efforts.
Photos by Jeff Hoerth, Zing HQ LLC
IT Startup facilitator John Sechrest offers advice to participants in advance of
their offering business ideas and choosing which teams to join in making some ideas
come to fruition.
There was a long line of idea generators this year taking 60 seconds at the
microphone to convince others in the audience of what will be the next big thing.

What is an Ambassador?
By Scott Becker, Chair
Opus Bank
Another year is coming to an end and I hope yours has been happy and successful. The Ambassadors have been busy helping Bruce and the Chamber staff with delivering new member plaques, ribbon
cuttings, membership retention and volunteering in the community. After all, we are the “Meeters and
Greeters” of the Chamber and get to be involved in its every aspect. We are on the front lines ready to help members get
the most from their membership. We are present at the monthly Membership Luncheons, Business Networking Luncheons,
Business After Hours and many more events happening throughout the year. We help to make sure people meet one
another and most of all, have fun. All of this takes some effort on our part but it is rewarding. We give Chamber members
the information they need to network better, which, in turn, helps the Chamber retain more of its members. We also have
the ability to meet all of the new members and let them know about our businesses. It’s a lot of fun for all of us. We enjoy
meeting all of you, and once in a while we do some business together. I’ve been an Ambassador since 1998, and for me the
experience has been tremendous.
I’d like to invite you to join us our next meeting which is January 30th. We meet at 11:30am on the last Thursday of
every month at the Chamber Office. Bring a lunch and we’ll introduce you to another opportunity to get involved in your
Chamber and your community. As a Chamber Ambassador you will definitely get back what you put in! Please call me with
any questions you might have. (425) 822-0200.
Thank you to volunteers for downtown holiday decorating
It’s the most wonderful time of the year in downtown Kirkland! Over 100 volunteers gathered in late November to
decorate our town with lights and garlands to beautify our city for the holiday season. These decorations are also the first
step leading up to our annual tree lighting and music festival, which draws people from around the area to downtown
Kirkland each year. Despite temperatures in the mid-teens, this year did not disappoint. Over 1,000 people converged in the
streets of downtown to listen to music performances on four stages, sled down the snow hill, visit Santa, participate in a
scavenger hunt, and watch the 35-foot tree light up the night sky. Fire barrels, heaters, and foot warmers kept participants
nice and toasty, along with hot beverages and clam chowder that was served to all who needed a little extra warmth in
their tummies.
Un-decorating Party on January 11
We will wrap up the holiday season with our annual “Very Merry Un-Decorating Party” from 8:30-11:00am on January
11, and we need volunteers! Please visit www.volunteerkirkland.com to sign up. Many hands make light work and keeps
everyone in the holiday spirit.

Weather brews up a storm but revelers
not deterred at Oktoberfest
Kirkland Oktoberfest burst onto the scene during the last weekend of September as an instant crowd favorite featuring keg tapping, chicken dancing, wiener
dog racing, song singing, beer drinking brat eating and of course, oom pah pahing. The inaugural event held in Marina Park, opened to rave reviews with smiling
faces enjoying this harvest season celebration.
The spirited atmosphere of this authentic München-style Oktoberfest filled
the Festhalle with singing, dancing and swaying arm in arm to the best imported
Oktoberfest bands around.
Kirkland Oktoberfest features local craft beers and local cuisine complimenting the German imports in an Oktoberfest with a Northwest twist. See you again
next year at Oktoberfest! Prost!
Stormy weather didn’t dampen the spirits of these fun enthusiasts at Oktoberfest
in Marina Park in late September. Troy McVicker of EventSource Northwest served as
emcee during the 2-day event while live music accompanied the stein hoisting.

cutting honors (as seen on front page) along with Councilmember Doreen Marchione and

What is the Kirkland
Promise Committee?
The Kirkland Promise Committee was created by the Greater Kirkland
Chamber of Commerce to study the Kalamazoo Promise and the impact of early
childhood education on student and lifetime performance. The Kalamazoo Promise guarantees tuition and fees to graduating seniors provided they qualify for
post-secondary education. Each Promise Program is unique as it is tailored to the
needs of the particular community. The committee will make its
recommendation in the spring.
We see the need to obtain
facts and figures on the nature
and extent of preschool education in the state of Washington,
understand K-12 funding and programming in the state and in the district, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses
of Lake Washington School District, and understand the funding and nature of
post-secondary education in our area.
We are fortunate to live in a great school district, but some issues to consider
are: 1. 21% of our graduates do not pursue post-secondary education; 2. 8% do
not graduate; 3. Many families cannot afford post-secondary education.
The committee consists of the Superintendent, President and members of the
Chamber, educators, a pastor and interested citizens. If you have an interest in
this study, email [email protected]

Fall fashion rolled into downtown Kirkland in a big way this September. The
glamorous occasion showcasing the finest items downtown merchants have to
offer was the best fashion event on the eastside this fall. The energy was high and
the red carpet was literally rolled out to greet the guests as they entered the tent
and were treated to champagne, wine, appetizers, and a premium swag bag. Miss
Washington USA served as the emcee and kicked things off in style. As models
took the runway, the cheers and screams from the audience could be heard around
town. Each downtown merchant had their chance to take the runway and show
everyone why Kirkland is the only place to go when seeking the best in trends for
women, men, and even dogs. This first year event was a grand success and we are
already planning how to make it even better in 2014.
