Escovedo scores solid
Springsteen connection
“I’ve always been a fan of
Texas songwriters,” Bruce
Springsteen told a Houston
audience before bringing
out a pair of them during
his April 14 performance at
the Toyota Center. Though
Alejandro Escovedo
Joe Ely’s been showing up
onstage with Bruce for years (of course, they
did “All Just to Get to You,” their duet from
Ely’s 1995 album, Letter to Laredo),
Alejandro Escovedo’s first outing with the
Boss was an event he called “my best musical experience, EVER.” His appearance during Springsteen’s encore was the first public
sign that his career will be taking on different
dimensions now that he’s signed with Jon
Landau Management — the company that
has represented Springsteen for three
decades (Shania Twain was one of only a few
other clients the firm has represented).
Landau and his partner, Barbara Carr, reportedly have close ties at Escovedo’s label, EMI’s
Manhattan/Back Porch Records, and Carr fell
in love with Escovedo’s new album, Real
Animal. (Carr, coincidentally, is married to
Springsteen biographer and longtime
Escovedo fan Dave Marsh.) Escovedo had

been managed for years by Heinz Geissler.
According to Backstreets.com, Springsteen
said, “He’s been putting out good music for
so long,” and plugged Escovedo’s upcoming
album twice, calling it “one of the best he’s
ever made” and announcing its June 10
release date (a vinyl-only double disc with
bonus tracks; CD and digital versions release
June 24). The E Street Band backed the duo
on “Always a Friend,” the first single from the
Tony Visconti-produced Real Animal. A video
of Escovedo’s performance with the Boss can
be found on YouTube.
Willie makes green list, blues news
Willie Nelson earned the No. 2 spot on
Billboard magazine’s list of the top 10 green
acts, published Tuesday in honor of Earth
Day. His just-reopening Carl’s Corner truck
stop reportedly is the biggest green truck
stop in the United States; all the fuels sold
there are at least partly “bioWillie” fuel,
which can be made from a variety of crops or
even used cooking oil. No. 1 on the list was
Jack Johnson, who, among other efforts,
uses Willie’s biodiesel in his touring vehicles.
Meanwhile, the FarmAid founder, who hits his
75th birthday on April 30, is about to release
an album with one of the few artists on the
planet he hadn’t previously recorded with.
Two Men with the Blues, to be released June
10, captures Willie’s January 2007 Lincoln
Center performance with jazz trumpeter
Wynton Marsalis. Actually, it’s three men,
counting Willie’s harp player, Mickey Raphael,
who’s also featured. Marsalis’ band handled
backing duties. Nelson has already released
two musical offerings this year: Moment of
Forever and the aptly named box set, One
Hell of a Ride.

Five Texans make New Folk finals
Five Texas songwriters were chosen from
among a pool of more than 800 artists
worldwide as finalists for the 2008 Grassy
Hill Kerrville New Folk competition: Datri
Bean, Shelley King, BettySoo and Molly
Venter of Austin and Claude “Butch” Morgan
of Devine. A total of 32 finalists will perform
their two submitted songs at the May 24-25
New Folk Concerts at Kerrville’s Threadgill
Theater, from which six will be selected as
winners. This is the 37th year for the New
Folk competition; previous Texas winners
include James McMurtry, Robert Earl Keen,
Tish Hinojosa, Slaid Cleaves, Darden Smith,
Nathan Hamilton, Beth Wood, Idgy Vaughn,
Cary Cooper, Danny Schmidt and current
Band of Heathens members Gordy Quist and
Colin Brooks.

White Denim and the Mars Volta (featuring
former El Pasoans Cedric Bixler-Zavala and
Omar Rodriguez-Lopez). The festival’s lineup
also includes a roster that jumps from heritage acts like John Fogerty to current media
darlings Vampire Weekend and the
Raconteurs (White Stripes frontman Jack
White’s side project). Robert Plant and Alison
Krauss, Beck, the Foo Fighters, Gnarls
Barkley, David Byrne and Manu Chao are also
lined up for the festival, which is produced by
Austin-based C3 Presents.

Shiner backs Stoney
Backstage visitors during Stoney LaRue’s
2008 tour will likely be offered only one
brand of beer: Texas’ own Shiner. That’s
because 99-year-old Spoetzl Brewery, makers
of the legendary suds, are sponsoring the
Texas-born, Oklahoma-based “Red Dirt”
music poster boy’s tour. His fans, who no
doubt already include a large contingent of
Shiner drinkers, are likely looking forward to
his return to the studio this summer to record
the follow-up to 2005’s The Red Dirt Album.

Latin Grammys landing in Houston
The Latin Recording Academy has chosen
Houston as the site of the ninth annual Latin
Grammy Awards, which will be televised live
on Nov. 13 from the Toyota Center arena.
Nominations will be announced Sept. 10. The
nation’s fourth-largest city, Houston has a
population that is 37 percent Hispanic.

Los Lonely Boys back with Forgiven
Los Lonely Boys are getting ready to release
their third Epic Records album, Forgiven, on
July 1, amid a series of Texas dates that
includes a free Blues on the Green concert
July 9 in Austin; they also just headlined the
Green Apple Music Festival in Dallas, held in
celebration of Earth Day. LLB are also hooking up with Los Lobos on the famed East
L.A. band’s Brotherhood tour. Also slated are
a pair of dates with Sheryl Crow and another pair with mentor Willie Nelson. The wishfully named Forgiven, recorded in a liveonstage setup at East Side Stages in Austin,
was produced by Steve Jordan, who has
produced and/or drummed with Buddy Guy,
Robert Cray, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards,
Herbie Hancock and several other legends.
Dr. John and Del Castillo guitarist Mark Del
Castillo guest on the album. In related news,
director Hector Galán reports Los Lonely
Boys: Cottonfields and Crossroads, the documentary that chronicles the band’s rise from
a bar band to Grammy winners, is expected
to hit PBS airwaves this fall, if not sooner.
Emilio Navaira, who was not expected to live
after sustaining serious injuries when the tour
bus he was driving crashed outside of
Houston last month, has been moved out of
intensive care and is no longer in critical condition, according to news reports. The
Grammy winner, 45, has been eating and talking, and was able to stand up and write his
name, the reports said. He’s undergone two
surgeries, one for brain injuries and another
for an aneurysm that was discovered on his
right lung. Doctors at Memorial Hermann
Hospital in Houston said it’s only the fifth
known instance of such an aneurysm and the
first one treated without removing the lung.
Rimes, Bon Jovi share CMT Award
Although a handful of Texas artists scored
nominations for the 2008 CMT Music
Awards, the only Lone Star to walk away
with a win at the April 14 event was LeAnn
Rimes. Rimes and Bon Jovi won the
Collaborative Video of the Year award for
“Till We Ain’t Strangers Anymore,” a song
featured on the New Jersey rock band’s
2007 country crossover album, Lost
Highway. Fellow Texan Kelly Clarkson was
nominated in the same category for her
duet with Reba McEntire, “Because of You.”
Other Texas nominees in various categories
included Miranda Lambert, Brooks & Dunn,
Big & Rich, Willie Nelson and Jack Ingram.
Austin gets Latino festival
Austin’s Latino Music Month will culminate with
the first Pachanga Latino Music Festival on
May 31 in the city’s Waterloo Park. The music,
arts and food festival will feature music by
Vallejo, Grupo Fantasma, Charanga Cakewalk,
Girl in a Coma and Manejo Beto, among others.
According to organizer Alejandro Vallejo,
“‘Pachanga’ literally means lively party, and
that is exactly what this festival will be, a true
celebration.” Latin artists will showcase at venues all over the capital city during May; for
more info, visit www.pachangafest.com.
Whistle a happy tune ... for TxDOT
Vehicle registration might not put a song in
everybody’s heart, but it inspired several creative Texans to take part in TxDOT’s “Put
Texas In Your Corner” promotion, aimed at
getting Texans to renew their registration
stickers on time. Composing jingles ranging
from country to hip-hop, the winners — Stacy
Allen, Carey Dyer, Tim Cissell and Jake Hill —
received limited-edition Epiphone Paul
McCartney Texan guitars, along with bragging
rights to tunes you’ll be hearing on radio stations across the dial in the coming months.
Closet rockers can jam for HAAM
Taking a cue from Cleveland’s Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame & Museum, which held regional
semi-finals for its 2007 Fortune Battle of the
Corporate Bands during the Summer NAMM
music merchandisers convention in Austin
last year, Austin’s Health Alliance for Austin
Musicians foundation is planning its first
Corporate Battle of the Bands. The fundraiser for HAAM, which makes low-cost health
care services available to musicians, offers a
chance for 9-to-5 types to remove their ties
or heels and let out their inner rock stars.

In Memoriam: Joshua Knight
Joshua Knight, keyboard player for the
Loebau-based County Road 114 Band, died
in a car accident near Giddings on the night
of April 12. Born in 1987, Knight was nicknamed “Fingers” and known for coloring his
honky-tonk piano work with shades of jazz
and classical influences. He also handled
booking for the 5-year-old country band.
According to a group statement on County
Road 114’s MySpace page, singer/guitarist
Mark Andrew, lead guitarist Amanda Hart,
drummer Seth Jenke and road manager
Chris Baker are determined to carry on. “It
will never be the same without our brother
up onstage with us, but knowing Josh, he’d
insist we press on and follow our dreams
here on Earth.”
Artists mourn Chris Gaffney
Alejandro Escovedo, Rosie Flores, Jim
Lauderdale, Lucinda Williams, James Intveld
and Jesse Dayton are among the artists committed to performing songs by Chris Gaffney
for a memorial CD. Gaffney, who was beginning
to receive long-overdue recognition and accolades as frontman/co-founder of the Hacienda
Brothers, died April 17 of liver cancer. He was
57. His band’s new album, Arizona Motel, will be
released June 24. Gaffney, labeled by Dayton
as “one of the great California honky-tonkers,”
had also been a member of Dave Alvin’s Guilty
Men band for years. Among the artists who
revered his work was the late Freddy Fender,
who recorded Gaffney’s “The Gardens,” with
the Texas Tornados. Gaffney’s survivors include
a daughter, Erika, of Houston.

MURRY
HAMMOND
I Don’t Know Where I’m
Going But I’m On My Way
(Self-Released)
Murry Hammond has long
been the Old 97’s’ secret weapon — the
amiable bass player and harmony singer
who always sneaks up with one or two of
the best songs on nearly every album the
band has ever made. He keeps a low-key
profile on his solo album, too, quietly picking (and yodeling) his way through a
spookily beautiful mix of acoustic gospel
roots tunes that beg for a long, slow drive
down a lost highway. RICHARD SKANSE

Sleepercar is the vehicle by

pedal-steel-drenched Americana. He’s still a
newbie to these parts, and some of the
songs aren’t that far removed from his
indie-rock comfort zone, but at its best,
West Texas showcases Ward’s songwriting
chops better than any other project he’s
ever been involved in. RICHARD SKANSE

MARCIA BALL
Peace, Love & BBQ
(Alligator)
Just in time for
Jazzfest,
singer/pianist
Marcia Ball
releases yet
another seamless
recording, moving effortlessly
from uptempo
goodtime tunes
like the opener, “Party Town,” about —
where else? — her beloved N’Awlins, to a
gorgeous gospel turn with cowriter Tracy
Nelson on “Where Do You Go?,” a somber
meditation on the Katrina experience.
(That disaster clearly influences not only
the pointed message of “Party Town,” it
also provides the undercurrent of another
standout ballad, “Ride It Out.”) Other collaborators on the Stephen Bruton-produced Peace, Love & BBQ include Dr.
John, Ian McLagan, Wayne Toups,
Terrence Simien, Cindy Cashdollar, Barry
“Frosty” Smith, Albert & Gage and Ball’s
esteemed band: the Keller brothers, Thad
Scott and forever by-her-side bassist Don
Bennett. But Ball’s own expressive fingers
and flawless voice are fully front and center, whether she’s delivering an ode to a
few of her favorite things (peace, love and
barbecue, y’all!), a zydeco-inflected lesson
in marital harmony (“Married Life”) or a
bluesy benediction via Bill Withers’ “I
Wish You Well.” LYNNE MARGOLIS

Eliza creates Beautiful World
Acclaimed Austin-based singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson continues her streak of deceptively
optimistic album titling (Land of Milk and Honey, Paradise Hotel) with the May 27 release of
Beautiful World on Red House Records. Gilkyson calls the 11-track Mark Hallman-produced
set “my most joyful recording yet,” but her pointed, somber reflections on the folly of man
and the state of the world in tracks like “Great Correction,” “The Party’s Over” and “Dream
Lover” (about a “porno queen”) should dispel any fear that the writer of 2005’s searing
“Man of God” has gone soft. Players on the album include Gilkyson’s brother, Tony Gilkyson,
David Grissom, Cindy Cashdollar, Elana James, John Inmon and Julie Wolf, in addition to
Gilkyson’s veteran road and studio band: guitarist Mike Hardwick, bassist Glenn Fukunaga
and drummer Cisco Ryder (Gilkyson’s son).
Q&A Gordy Quist
of the Band of Heathens
A BUNCH OF HEATHENS: (from left) Gordy Quist, Ed Jurdi, Colin Brooks,
John Chipman and Seth Whitney. (Photo Courtesy Lotos Nile)
The Band of Heathens may have germinated
as an informal project, but they quickly morphed into a real band as listeners in Austin
and beyond discovered the unique alchemy
created by the country-folk warmth of Gordy
Quist, the soulful vigor of Ed Jurdi and the
gritty mystique of Colin Brooks. Almost
before they knew they really were a band,
the three frontmen and their ace rhythm
section (drummer John Chipman and bassist
Seth Whitney) were officially labeled Best
New Band at the 2007 Austin Music Awards.
Two live albums later (Live at Momo’s and
Live at Antone’s), they’re preparing to
release their first studio album, produced by
Ray Wylie Hubbard, on May 20. And their
fame is about to expand even more: the
Band of Heathens’ Feb. 24 performance on
the legendary Mountain Stage syndicated
radio show will hit the airwaves sometime in
May. They’ll also be playing KNBT-FM’s
Americana Jam at Gruene Hall in New
Braunfels on May 18. But before this Band on
the run takes off, we snared Quist for a quick
peek inside a Heathen’s head.

So what was it like for you guys to work
with Ray Wylie Hubbard on your first
studio album? Was that intimidating at
all, or was it just a natural hang?
Working with Ray was great. He’s an artist
with strong opinions and ideas and he
works well with other artists with strong
opinions and ideas, and hard heads. I think
we collaborated really well. We hit it off
with Ray really well from the beginning
(after) Mattson Rainer introduced us on his
KNBT radio show. Ray is really easygoing,
so I don’t think there was any intimidation
factor to deal with. Well actually, he did pull
out a 9-inch switchblade knife in the middle
of recording one day in the studio while
opening a box of bottled waters, but
besides that, he’s really easygoing. I think
he has done some other producing before
on other bands’ projects and on his last
album, Snake Farm, so he knows what he’s
doing.
What's the key to keeping egos from
clashing in a band with three singersongwriters? Or is it a constant battle
for the top-dog spot behind the scenes?
For us, the key to keeping egos in check is
the authoritarian dictatorship rule. We are
all the top-dog/dictator at all times. If somebody disagrees with anything at all, we kick
them out of the band until they use their
authoritarian dictatorship power to reinstate themselves back into the band.
Seriously though, I’m not sure how we do it.
We get along really well and we’ve found a
democratic system that works for us.
Everybody respects everybody else as an
artist and a musician so everyone puts in
their two cents, we shake it up and see
where things fall out. I think it helps that
this started out as a loose side project just
for kicks while we were all doing other gigs.
Also, on the songwriting front, I think there
is a healthy competition in the songwriting
that pushes us to all write better songs, and
it actually has resulted in a lot of co-writing
between us.
in a guitar solo, or the space in the groove, I
think empty space has power in music, and
making each note or each word say a lot is
something to keep in mind. Especially when
there are five people in the band and three
of them are lead guitar players!
What do you remember about the first
performance you ever gave in public?
I don’t remember. “You” meaning the Band
of Heathens? I think there was a lot of
tequila involved.
What’s your all-time favorite record, at
least at this particular moment?
Some of my favorite records of all time are
the Rolling Stones’ Exile on Main Street, the
Beatles’ “White Album” and the Band’s The
Band. At this moment, I’m listening to a lot
of Neil Young — Everybody Knows This is
Nowhere and Harvest. If you asked everybody in the band, you’d get a wide range of
answers, from Elvis Costello to Otis Redding
to Johnny Cash to Wilco. CODEY ALLEN
What's been the most helpful advice
you've ever been given regarding playing
music?
Hmm. Something that’s always stuck with
me that I strive to keep in my consciousness when I’m playing music is that less is
more. Whether it be words in a song, notes
