Euroguidance Hungary started operating in Szeged in 2000 in the framework of the Leonardo da
Vinci Programme of the European Commission. Presently it operates as a unit of the Public Employment Service and the National Office for Employment and Social Affairs and as a member of the
international Euroguidance network of the European Union. Our main objectives are to support
vocational guidance, life-long learning and international mobility as well as to promote language
learning and employability.

National symbols
Since 1990 Hungary is an independent democratic state. The form of state is republic; the official name of the country is Hungarian Republic.
The capital city of Hungary is Budapest.
Flag: The national flag of Hungary is the tricolour
with three horizontal stripes: red, white and
green and the historical coat of arms.
Red: symbolizes strength
The Hungarian coat of arm and flag
White: symbolizes faithfulness
Green: symbolizes hope.
The role model of the Hungarian flag was the French tricolour and became very popular during the
revolution of 1848/49. Since 20 August 2000 the flag has to be used on official buildings.
The Hungarian crown: The Hungarian crown
was given to Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian
king on the occasion of his coronation in 1001. It
is the oldest crown in Europe.

The national anthem: the lyrics of national anthem of Hungary were written by Ferenc Kölcsey
and its music was composed by Ferenc Erkel in
the 19th century. The anthem refers to the most
important historical events of the country and is
played at various events.
The poem and song titled ‘Szózat’ can be considered as a second national anthem of Hungary. The
poem was written by Mihály Vörösmarty while Béni Egressy composed the music to it. Szózat is sung
at the end of the various ceremonies.
The Hungarian coat of arms: The national coat of arms consists of the crown of St. Stephen, the
state-founder king and the silvers stripes are said to represent the four rivers (Duna, Tisza, Dráva and
Száva) while the hills are said to represent the three mountains (Mátra, Tátra, Fátra) but this theory is
not historically founded.

In case of emergency first aid and emergency treatment is free for everybody in Hungary. Further
medical treatment depends on the person’s insurance. Since 15 February 2007 it is obligatory to pay
a “visit-charge” at the doctors.

Medical Insurance in Hungary
Residents of the European Union member states:
The medical care of the European Union residents is ensured in
Hungary on the basis of the European Health Insurance Card.
The common European Health Insurance Card replaces the
following forms: E111, E110, E109 and E128. The EHIC entitles
EU citizens to reduced medical costs on the territory of the European Union, Switzerland and the European Economic Area. The
quickest and easiest way to get an EHIC is to apply online; the
card is valid for 3 to 5 years and patient will be treated on the
same basis as the citizens living in the visited country.

Residents of Non-EU countries:
Non-EU member states residents will be treated on the basis of the various bilateral socio-political or
medical-care agreements.
• Socio-political agreements:
with Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia, CIS except
for the Baltic states Citizens of these countries are provided
with emergency care and treatment free of charge in Hungary. The treatment is limited to emergency health care.
• Medical-care cooperation agreements:
with Sweden, Finland, Norway, Jordan, Kuwait, Angola, Iraq,
Mongolia, South Korea, Cuba.
Citizens of these countries are entitled to thorough medical treatment including emergency health care.
In case of medical help they are required to produce a proof of identity proving that they are entitled to
such service by law.

In Hungary mobile telephones are very popular, there
are three major service providers. All of them have
prepaid cards which can be bought at newsstands.

In Hungary all of the international credit cards are accepted.
Usually the places that accept credit cards mark it on the
door. Money exchange can be done in banks, travel agencies,
or at the various exchange offices in the main shopping areas.
Giving tips is very common in Hungary. Tips are given in restaurants, in cabs
and at the various services; tips should be 10% of the costs of the services, but only
if you are satisfied with it.

Public Transport in Hungary
Hungary has an extensive public transport system, particularly in the capital. The domestic fares are
well under the European average.
Travelling inside the country:
By train:
The centre of the railway system is the capital, Budapest.
The city has three main railway stations, Southern, Eastern
and Western Stations. There are scheduled intercity and
express lines to all the main cities and towns of Hungary.

By bus:
Hungary has a very well developed bus network, with which you
can reach any part of the country.
Budapest has three main Bus stations:
Erzsébet tér bus terminal - Direction Western-Hungary
Népstadion bus terminal - Direction Eastern-Hungary
Árpád híd bus terminal - Direction Danube-bend
The local bus transportation is also extensive in most towns. Buses
run usually from early morning until late in the evening. There are

City public transportation:
The public transportation of the cities is well developed.
In the main cities of the country (Budapest, Debrecen,
Szeged, Miskolc) there are buses, trolleys and trams that
provide convenient and rapid transport inside the towns.
In Budapest you can also use the underground and HÉV
(suburban railway).
By plane
The main airport of Hungary is Ferihegy which has two
terminals (Ferihegy 1 and Ferihegy 2A and 2b). Beside
Ferihegy Airport there are altogether 19 smaller airport
borders in Hungary . These airports welcome flights from
other cities of Hungary, but the price of this type of travelling is quite high in Hungary.

University towns in Hungary
Szeged
Fascinating streets, beautiful squares, and the
shore of the Tisza are perfect scenery for the unforgettable schooldays in Szeged. The city of sun
is rich in cultural programmes, festivals, let alone
its lively weekdays with the cosy pubs and clubs
designed especially for students.

Debrecen
Wide streets, spacious squares, the Reformation
Cathedral - situated in the North of the Hungarian
Great Plain, Debrecen is the second biggest city
in Hungary often called as the “Calvinist Rome”. It
has been the home town of several famous poets,
and the second home for lots of students. The
Hortobágy National Park, where you can find the
biggest “puszta” with its special flora and fauna, is
only a stone’s throw away from the city.

Built on seven hills, on the two sides of Séd creek, the
“City of Queens” is a prosperous town in the Transdanubian region offering more and more cultural programmes
every year. Veszprém is only 15 kms from Hungary’s
biggest lake, the Balaton, and is bordered by the slopes of
Bakony – no wonder it was Queen Gisela’s (St. Stephen’s
wife) favourite city.

Győr is a mellow and colourful town, the second
richest in historic buildings. Situated half way between Budapest and Vienna, on the banks of River
Rába, this is a town of festivals where friends of the
arts and those who are eager for a high-quality
relaxation can find attractive programmes all the
year round.

Miskolc
The city lies at the meeting point of different geographical regions – east from the Bükk mountains,
in the valley of the river Sajó, and the streams Hejő
and Szinva. The University of Miskolc is one of the
newer universities of Hungary as it was founded
in the 1950s. The university, the campus and the
sport facilities are surrounded by a large park in a
nice surrounding.

The Education System in Hungary
Pre-primary education (ISCED 0–1)
This educational level is meant for children from 3 to 7 years of age. The pre-primary education
(óvoda) is optional, except for the final year (beyond the age of 5), which is compulsory. During the
last year at kindergarten, children are prepared for school.
Primary education (ISCED 1+2)
In Hungary primary schools (általános iskola) provide basic education in two 4-year cycles. Children
attend primary schools until the age of 14, after which they have to choose a secondary school. For
both primary and secondary school teachers, the National Core Curriculum provides a framework to
form their syllabi.
Secondary education (ISCED 2-3)
Students can choose from the following secondary school programmes:
• Vocational school programmes, special vocational school programmes
(szakiskolai és speciális szakiskolai programok) (ISCED 3)
• Secondary general school programmes (gimnáziumi programok) (ISCED 2+3)
• Secondary vocational school programmes (szakközépiskolai programok) (ISCED 3)
The division of the twelve-year general education may vary: it can be divided either into 4 years of
primary education + 8 years of secondary education or 6 years of primary education + 6 years of
secondary education. On the basis of their received points, students gain admission to secondary
schools after a central secondary school entrance exam.
College basic and supplementary programs (ISCED 5)
These programmes are offered cooperating with secondary vocational schools for students with a
secondary school leaving certificate. During the training students get credit points, which are taken
into account when they apply for places at universities and colleges.
Higher education institutions (ISCED 5-6)
In Hungary there are mostly state universities and colleges; a smaller number are controlled by
various churches and there are private colleges too. There are also some foreign higher education
institutions in Hungary. In the country there are altogether 77 universities and colleges (18 state
universities, 14 state colleges, 25 religious colleges/universities institutions, 14 private and foundation schools and 6 colleges of foreign countries established in Hungary) In the 1990s, several higher
education institutions merged.
Academic year
The academic year consists of two terms, the spring (February - June) and the autumn (September –
January) term. Both terms have a 6-week team period.
Tuition fee
Foreign citizens taking part in foreign language programmes (English, German or French) have to pay
a tuition fee. More information can be found on the homepage of the individual university/college or
on the homepage of the National Higher Education Centre (www.felvi.hu).

Admission requirements
The requirement for admission to colleges and universities is
either a Hungarian secondary school leaving certificate (Érettségi
bizonyítvány), or its foreign equivalent, or a degree obtained in
higher education. From the school year of 2005/2006 a new type
of school-leaving examination was introduced. In the academic
year 2006/2007, the structure of the Hungarian higher education
system started to replace the dual education form accepted in the
European Union. The first university students to receive Hungarian
BA degrees in the new system are to graduate in the academic
year 2008/2009.
Students complete their studies with the final examination which
consists of the preparation and the defence of the thesis and of
the oral or written examinations prescribed by the qualification
requirements. Additionally, universities provide three-year training for doctoral degree, which can be
either a PhD (doctor of philosophy) or a DLA (doctor of liberal arts).
How to apply?
Foreign candidates generally should submit the following documents:
• Photocopies of certificates of their highest qualification
• If the candidate has not yet obtained a secondary school leaving certificate, school reports for the
last two years including all graded results
• A curriculum vitae in English
• A medical certificate
• Two recent passport-size photographs
• Letters of recommendation (e.g. from school)
• At certain universities, certification of language competence (TOEFL Test)
• Photocopy of passport with personal data.
Citizens of the member states of the
European Union and the European
Economic Area (Norway, Iceland and
Lichtenstein) do not need a student visa
to enter to Hungary. Citizens from other
counties who are accepted by an institute of higher education in Hungary are
required to obtain a student visa (TM-6,
valid for 30 days) from the Hungarian
Embassy or Consulate before entering
the country. To receive a student visa,
it is necessary to present the „Letter of
Acceptance” from the university.
On entering the country, it is necessary to apply for a residence permit from the Hungarian Police Authorities for Foreign Citizens within 14 days. For further information visit the website of the Hungarian

Foreign language programmes
During recent years, the number of courses in foreign languages has risen significantly (English,
German and French). Competence in Hungarian language is not a criterion, with the exception
of courses provided completely or partly in Hungarian. There are foreign language programmes,
particularly at the medical, economic and technical universities and colleges, where knowledge of
Hungarian is not needed. Most institutions offer a good opportunity for student mobility (e.g.
SOCRATES, ERASMUS and CEEPUS).
Credit Transfer System
The obligatory use of the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) compatible credit system was introduced in September 2003. One credit corresponds to 30 hours of student workload. The minimum
number of credits for a college-level degree is 180 for a three-year training, 240 credits for a four-year
training; in case of a university-level degree it is 240 for a four-year training, 300 credits for a five-year
training, and 360 credits for a six-year training; for obtaining a further specialisation degree it is 60
while for the doctoral degree it is 180.
System of assessment
The students are assessed on the basis of five grades: excellent (5), good (4), fair (3), pass (2), and fail
(1) or with the classification: excellent, satisfactory, fail.
Degrees
The degrees available at universities and colleges are as follows:
• Bachelor degree, particularly at colleges: 3-4 years (Főiskolai oklevél)
• Master degree, at universities: 4-5 years; master degree at medical
universities: 6 years (Egyetemi oklevél)
• Doctorate, (PhD - doktori fokozat); Doctor of Liberal Arts (DLA –
mester fokozat): 3 years
Student visa and resident permit in Hungary:
European Union and European Economic Area Citizens:
The citizens of the member states of the European Union (EU) and the
European Economic Area (EEA - Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein) do
not need a student visa to enter Hungary.
Non-EU or non-EEA Citizens:
Students arriving from non-European Union or non-European
Economic Area countries are required to obtain a student
visa (TM-6, valid for 30 days) from the Hungarian Embassy or
Consulate before entering the country. To receive a student visa,
it is necessary to present the „Letter of Acceptance” from the
university. Arranging the visa may last 2 months so make sure to
apply for it well in advance.
On entering the country, it is necessary to apply for a residence
permit from the Hungarian Police Authorities for Foreign Citizens within 14 days.
