NEWS
FROM
THE DDA
Dumpster Enclosure Expansion on Mary Alexander Court
Pizzo Construction was scheduled to begin expansion of the Dumpster Enclosure
the week of April 25th. The current enclosure will be expanded to the east and will
accommodate all three dumpsters, recycling containers and single combined grease
container within its walls. Currently, the dumpsters are placed across the sidewalk
and adjacent to the enclosure and do not fit within the walls. One of the mature trees
will be relocated and the landscaping enhanced in the area. The expansion should
provide a cleaner, aesthetically pleasing solution to the current dumpster area.
Pavilion Repair
DDA staff is working with consultant to provide a punch list of items needed to repair the Pavilion and get it back in good
operational form and looking terrific. Once the punch list has been completed the project will be packaged and bid out. Staff is
hopeful that the work can be completed by June 3, the date of the first Friday Night Summer Concert. If not, the repairs will be
scheduled around Tunes for Tuesday and Friday Night Concerts.
Road Repair on Main Street
Main Street in front of Comerica Bank was repaired the week of April 18th. Main Street was closed
for three days to address the issue. The road had begun settling and the pavement and stone were
buckling and creating a trip and pothole issue. The problem was identified and repaired and new
concrete was poured and the brick reset. The road reopened on April 20th.
Secondary Streetscape Guidelines
DDA staff has drafted a set of Secondary Streetscape Guidelines that will guide the public
improvements that are impacted by private development in the downtown. While these areas were
addressed along Main and Center during the Streetscape Enhancement project, the side streets
have not been completed. As new projects come forth in these areas, the document will help
insure that the area is cohesive in its function and looks. The Guidelines will be on the Planning
Commission’s May 3rd agenda for review and adoption.
Street Furniture
Two ADA accessible tables and 4 chairs have been purchased to add to Town Square to allow
patrons with wheelchairs access to the tables. They will have small handicapped symbols on each
of the tables to identify them as ADA compliant furnishings.
The DDA has replaced several of the umbrellas in Town Square in time for seasonal use. The existing
umbrellas were repaired and cleaned for installation.
Landscaping
DDA staff has been working with Commercial Grounds Services to get ready for summer seasonal plantings. The work includes
grooming of the downtown landscape beds, trimming back annuals, cleaning out the tree wells, trimming hedges and shrubs,
mulching and general sweeping. Annuals will be installed the week of May 23rd, weather permitting. Our three seasonal
groundskeepers – Vance, Tyler, and Gunnar are all three returning this summer to assist the DDA in keeping the downtown well
maintained and looking good.
Strategic Plan
Following a competitive bid process, the team from Beckett and Raeder and LandUSA were selected to complete the Strategic
Plan for Downtown Northville. A Steering Committee has been created and will help guide the Strategic Planning process.
There will be opportunity for public input during the planning process, as well as informational presentations, which will be open
to the public, so keep an eye out in local publications and on our website www.downtownnorthville.com for updates.
