WREDLING PERFORMERS
Please consider being entertained at tonight’s Wredling Variety Show which will take place at the Norris
Center at 7:00pm. We have many acts that have been working hard to put on a great show. If you are
really ambitious, you could also attend the Wredling Spring Play this weekend as well. Opening night was
last night. If you missed it, no need to worry as the show will take place this afternoon at 4:30pm and
Saturday at 2:00pm.
CELEBRATING MR. WREDLING
As most of you know, we lost Mr. Wredling, our school’s
namesake, last October. As a final tribute to him, Wredling will be
having a student assembly next Wednesday which would have
been Mr. Wredling’s 102nd birthday. Our students will be hearing
from Wredling’s first Principal, Mr. Lindahl, St. Charles Mayor
Rogina, various musical groups, and select students. Mr. Wredling
was a great, influential man who had a major role in shaping
today’s Wredling Middle School. We are excited to have this
“capstone” celebration for our Wredling students.
INCOMING 6TH GRADERS
Beginning in early April, I will be visiting with the parents of our incoming 6th graders. I look forward to
these meetings for several reasons. First, I enjoy getting to make connections with the new parent group.
Second, I love having the opportunity to talk about Wredling and all the wonderful things middle school
has to offer. Third, it’s an opportunity for families to get connected to our fabulous Wredling PTO. If you
know of a family of a soon to be Redhawk, please encourage them to attend the upcoming events.

Incoming 6th grade parents: You are invited to attend one of two “transition to middle school” nights
in the Wredling Cafeteria. These evenings are scheduled for Thursday, April 7th and Tuesday, April 12th
from 6:30-7:30pm. The evenings will provide an opportunity to learn more about your student’s
transition to Wredling Middle School and ask questions about the process. Please plan to attend one
of these meetings.

Incoming 6th grade Bilingual parents and students: We are hosting a parent/student night for our
Bilingual families on Thursday, April 21st in the Wredling LRC from 6:00-7:00pm.

Incoming 6th grade parents and students: Please mark your calendars for Thursday, April 28th. On this
night, the 6th Grade Open House will take place at Wredling from 6:30-7:30pm. 6th Grade teachers,
team leaders, counselors, and administrators will be sharing information about middle school. Families
will have the opportunity to meet the 6th grade faculty and tour Wredling Middle School.
Don’t forget to “spring forward” this Saturday night!
Enjoy your weekend!

GIVE FROM THE HEART FOOD DRIVE
The Wredling Middle School Student Council would like to invite all Redhawks to participate in
the annual "Give From the Heart Food Drive." Help us provide nutritious meals to families in our
community as we collect non-perishable items for the Tri-Cities Salvation Army March 14th-March
18th. Teams will be competing in a friendly competition to see who can donate the most items
and winners will be announced next Friday so start collecting!
PARCC TESTING IS ON THE WAY
Mark your calendars…PARCC testing will be here before you know it! At Wredling, we have plans to
implement PARCC testing on April 6-April 8 for 7th and 8th graders and April 11-April 13 for 6th graders. As
you know from last year, this assessment is more rigorous than the standardized tests of the past as it is
designed to reflect college/career readiness skills. This year, all students will take these tests on digital
devices. Please see the attached letter from Dave Chiszar, Executive Director of Assessment and
Accountability.
WREDLING VARIETY SHOW
Please join us for the Wredling Variety Show TONIGHT at 7:00pm at the Norris Cultural

tomorrow, March 12th at 2:00pm in our Black Box Theater. Students have been
working many hours to make this a great show.
HAWK CHORUS AND TREBLE ENSEMBLE
Good luck to both the Hawk Chorus and Treble Ensemble who will be competing in the Illinois Grade
School Music Association District Organizational Contest tomorrow, March 12th, at Haines Middle
School. Hawk Chorus meets at Haines in room 108 by 8:50am and Treble Ensemble meets in room 104
by 10:55am. All are welcome to attend these performances. Admission is free.
THIRD QUARTER ART SHOW
The third quarter Art Show Open House will take place on Tuesday, March 15th from 6:00-7:30pm.
Stop by as there are many wonderful pieces of original art to see!
8th GRADE PORTRAIT PROOFS
8th grade portrait proofs were distributed to your child at school. Please return your order form and
payment envelope to the student services office. If you would prefer to have your child's picture retaken
on Wednesday, March 16th, send your child to school with the portrait proof packet on that day.
LOOKING TOWARD NEXT YEAR
As we approach spring, the WMS staff has already begun planning for your child’s transition to the next
grade level. A big part of this involves the scheduling process. It begins by taking a look at the anticipated
school population for next year. Based off of these numbers, core teams are adjusted to accommodate
student needs. Next, the development of exploratory and Physical Education rotations takes place,
followed then by developing specific class period offerings. This is a complex process involving many
variables, which is why this process begins so early. To that end…
Parents of current 6th and 7th grade students
If your child has a specific learning style need, placement issues, or social/emotional
concerns that you would like to share, please let us know. While we do not accept specific
team requests we do want your input regarding your child’s educational needs. Please
contact your child’s counselor so that we can find the best possible fit for your child as a
learner. Please send this information on or before March 25, 2016.
MEDICATION DELIVERY IN THE SCHOOL SETTING
A significant number of school children have health problems that require the administration of medication
during the school day. That number has been growing rapidly. There are a number of reasons why
students require medication in the school setting and it is important because medicine often provides
students with the ability to manage their health problems here, thus avoiding absences and interruptions
to the learning process.
Regulatory bodies have set strict guidelines for medication administration because they recognize that
these procedures protect ALL students. One of the more important procedures that is in place in District
303 Schools is the requirement that all medications including over the counter and prescribed medications
must be transported to and from school by a responsible adult and delivered to the school nurse.
Medications must be delivered in their original pharmacy or manufacturer-labeled containers that
designate the proper dosage guidelines and other pertinent information. Please note that students who
have been approved to carry and self-administer their own medication may transport them to and from
school. If you have any questions or concerns regarding medication processes and their implementation in
school, please refer to the D303 Health Services Web Site or feel free to call the health office at Wredling
Middle School (331) 228-3704. Thank you in advance for abiding to these processes.
FOX VALLEY SUMMER ACTIVITIES FAIR
The Wredling PTO will be hosting the Fox Valley Summer Activities Fair with over 75
organizations coming! The fair will take place on Thursday, March 17th from 6-8pm.
This is a free community event to learn about academic, sports, enrichment,
volunteer, and overnight camp activities for preschool-high school students.
Organizations attending are listed on our event Facebook page. Parent and
Wredling student volunteers will be crucial for the success of this event. You’ll have
time to enjoy the event before or after volunteering. Contact Tracy Heilers at

ILLINOIS YOUTH SURVEY FOR 8TH GRADERS
Wredling Middle School and Community Unit School District 303 are working with the Center for
Prevention Research and Development at the University of Illinois to conduct a survey of Illinois middle and
high school students. The purpose of the Illinois Youth Survey is to better understand Illinois youth risk
and protective behaviors as they relate to student problems and academic success. The survey will be
given to 8th grade students only, and it will be conducted on Friday, April 15, 2016.
If your child participates, he/she will be asked to complete a survey (with no names or identification
numbers) that will be confidentially administered by a classroom teacher, counselor, or administrator. The
survey is completely voluntary, and privacy will be strictly protected. Students will be given a paper and
pencil survey in a regular classroom, and it will last about 45 minutes. If there are any questions your child
does not wish to answer, he/she is free to skip questions or stop taking the survey at any time. Students
who do not wish to participate in the survey or whose parents choose to deny permission for their
participation will be provided with an appropriate alternative activity (e.g. reading in the school library or
quiet reading) while the survey is being administered. The staff will remind students of these rights before
the survey begins.
This questionnaire asks about:
 personal use of alcohol and other drugs, perception of risks, where accessed, consequences of
use, approval or disapproval of use
 students’ feelings about their school experience
 family and personal characteristics
 family communication about substance use
 feelings about self and moods
 student health behaviors – food intake, exercise, height, and weight
If you wish to see the survey, it is available for preview in your child’s school office. Obtaining full
participation is very important to your child’s school and community as it helps to improve programs and
strategies to prevent youth-problem behaviors and enhance youth development. While the survey asks
personal questions about illegal behavior, several steps are taken to protect the privacy of students
participating. Students can skip any or all questions if they feel uncomfortable, and survey administrators
will make efforts to ensure privacy during the survey completion process. Collecting information from
Illinois students has many benefits to youth in your community and throughout the state. Survey data is
provided back to your school to help determine what programs may be needed to keep students safe and
healthy.
The surveys will be administered in Illinois schools during the 2015-2016 academic school year. If you DO
NOT want your child to participate in the survey, please complete the Opt Out form (your child will
receive early next week), sign it, and return it to the school within 2 weeks. Your decision to deny
permission will not in any way influence your future relationship with your child’s school, and you may also
withdraw your child during the survey by notifying the school office.
If you have any questions about the survey, please contact Michael Cortina, Student Assistance Counselor
(Wredling Middle School) at 331-228-5800. If you have any questions regarding the project and wish to
contact a staff person at the University of Illinois, please contact Peter Mulhall at (888) 333-5612 (Illinois toll
free) or email him at [email protected]. If you have any questions about your son or daughter’s rights as
a participant in this study, please contact the University of Illinois Institutional Review Board at 217-3332670 (collect calls will be accepted if you identify yourself as a research participant) or via email
at [email protected].

March 2016
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Students in grades 3 through 8 will be taking state tests in English/Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics
sometime between April 4 and May 4. Additionally, any high school student currently enrolled in English I
or Algebra I will also be tested. Please consult with your school for a more specific test schedule. These
assessments are designed to evaluate students’ progress toward the more rigorous state standards.
There is nothing to prepare for outside of school. Please just encourage your child to give his or her best
effort and, as always, preparing your child for a good day at school begins with a good night of sleep and
a nutritional breakfast.
These state tests are one of several ways student achievement is measured in CUSD 303. Your child’s
daily school work, teacher comments, and report cards are also important when determining overall
school achievement. If you have any questions regarding your child’s performance, be sure to talk with
your child’s teacher or principal.
PARCC results will be reported in the fall on the State School Report Cards. You will also receive
information about your child’s individual performance.
Sincerely,
David Chiszar
