It’s Bedtime...

While our Medical and Surgical
Units may not have the TV-style
glamour of the Operating Rooms or
the joyful drama of the Birthing Unit,
many people in Guelph would be lost
without them. People come to these
units for many reasons – heart attack,
hip replacement, cancer surgery, stroke
and more. One thing they all have in
common is the need for a bed.

Janet Trowbridge is our Director
of Inpatient Surgery. For the past few
years, she has been advocating for new,
specialized beds to improve patient
comfort and safety, as well as care-giver
safety. On March 17, Janet’s efforts paid
off with the arrival of 12 specialized beds.
Janet explains, “These are the first new
beds in nine years. It was time to start
replacing the aging beds, some of which
were 20 years old.”
These beds, the Cadillac of the hospital
bed world, have many special features
to benefit both patients and nurses.
“One very helpful feature is the bed
exit alarm systems that notify the nurse
when someone tries to get out of bed.
In addition, it is so much easier to help
the patient get in and out of bed because
the frame is lower to the floor, which will
help prevent falls.”
The beds also have therapeutic surfaces
that help prevent bedsores. “For the
elderly or the bedridden, every little bit
helps,” Janet emphasizes.

This is not the USUAL BEDTIME story,
but it does have a HAPPY ending!
Saverio Dicino who was recently a patient
at GGH was enthusiastic about the new
beds, pronouncing them “very comfortable”.
Jackie Beaton, RN makes some
adjustments to the bed just to make sure.
“It’s all about creating a safer
environment for the patients who need
care and the nurses who provide the
care,” says Janet. Over time, budget
permitting, the Hospital hopes to replace
a number of the aging beds, a few at a
time. But these beds are costly – ranging
between $9,000-$13,000, depending on
the model.
Suzanne Bone the Foundation’s
Executive Director concurs. “We want
to help ensure everyone who needs
a specialized bed has one. Thanks to
the generosity of many of you who
responded to our seasonal mailing, we
have been able to help fund these beds
making a difference to our patients and
our staff.”

Calling All Foodies…
If plum ripple ice-cream with almond biscuits or crispy eggplant with tomato
bruschetta and basil aioli tickles your taste buds – just a few of the culinary delights
created by renowned chef Yasser Qahawish for Taste of Guelph – then mark your
calendar for Sunday September 19, 2010.
This year, to recognize 13 years of fabulous food, entertainment and fundraising,
our theme is A Baker’s Dozen. Artisanale Café & Bistro, under the careful auspices of Yasser Qahawish, will
be returning for the fourth time. Yasser will join nearly 50 other chefs, caterers,
brewers and vintners to celebrate the best of local creative cuisine, splendid spirits
and eclectic entertainment on the beautiful grounds of St. Joseph’s Health Centre.
When asked why he supports Taste of Guelph he responds, “I love the opportunity
to cook outdoors and to meet people. I am a people person. When I volunteer I
never think why I am doing this. I just do it. I explain this to my daughter as she tags
along and through my example she gets to understand all about giving, and hopefully
develops a sense of community.”

Canadian actress Sheila McCarthy, this year’s
Black Tie Bingo emcee, brought a little star power
of her own to “A Night Before the Oscars”.
… And the Oscar for Best
Production goes to Black Tie Bingo
“A Night Before the Oscars”!
This year’s Black Tie Bingo surpassed expectations by raising
$150,361, the most in the event’s 14-year history.
The money raised will help purchase 24 new pain pumps
to provide epidural relief for labouring moms and selfadministered yet monitored pain control for surgical patients.
These pumps are $5,000 each. The balance of the funds will
be used to purchase other types of medical equipment, to be
determined in the near future.

Golf Tournament
Hospital President and CEO Richard Ernst has
been talking to various groups to increase public
awareness of the Hospital – a goal of both the
Hospital and the Foundation.

Guelph General Hospital, for anyone to attend.

Spotlight on FGGH
Sometimes Little Things Do Make a Difference
Imagine arriving at the Hospital unexpectedly
in the middle of the night or, for that matter, any
time. It could be the mother who goes into early
labour, or an out-of-town visitor who suddenly
becomes ill. There’s been no time to pack an
overnight bag with essentials such as shampoo,
toothbrush or toothpaste – personal hygiene
items not included in the Hospital budget.
A few years ago, one of our regular supporters,
when told of this situation, agreed to direct
her donation toward the purchase of toiletry
essentials for those patients who arrive at the
Hospital unexpectedly. Little did she know she
was helping kick-start a meaningful new program
that provides patients in need with those basic

toiletry items we often take for granted – those
items that help us feel better about ourselves. We
can all relate to the therapeutic effect of clean
teeth or a hair wash.
Now in full swing this simple but impactful
program, co-ordinated by Foundation staffer
Ali Klaver, is proving to have untold benefits for
those patients who need to use it.

$2 million is a lot of money. That’s how many donor dollars
were given to GGH in 2009-2010 to change lives through the
purchase of equipment and renovations that would not otherwise
be possible. These donations – your donations – make a difference
to health care in our community.
As a donor, you likely know the government helps fund many
aspects of health care. Yet when it comes down to purchasing
new and replacement equipment like the items listed below,
we rely almost entirely on donated funds. That’s why we must
depend on the support of people like you - donors who know
and value our Hospital.
Here’s what you funded:
• Final installment to pay for MRI scanner and renovations ($320,000 this year, $3.1 million total) – more than 25,000
scans complete so far
• Vascular surgery equipment - $330,000
• Ultrasound unit to diagnose disease and injury and
for obstetrics patients - $170,000
• Pain pumps for surgical patients and labouring mothers - $120,000
• Renovations in the Emergency Department including Emergency
Mental Health Unit and ‘See and Treat’ area - $550,000
• Emergency Department equipment - $326,500
• Defibrillator for critically ill patients in the Emergency
Department - $30,000
• Special phototherapy light for jaundiced newborn
babies - $4,500
• And a host of other items including vital signs monitors,
recliners, toiletries, special mattresses, isolation carts,
commodes, TVs, dopplers, teaching aids, wheelchairs,
and toys and books for hospitalized children - $100,000
