Yakovlev Yak-9U Serial 470406 D-FAFA Air Fighter Academy GmbH An der Haffküste 1 Hangar 10 a 17419 Zirchow The history of Yakovlev Yak-9 To the quick glance, the discussed Yakovlev Yak-9 is quite similar to the well known Yakovlev Yak-3, but they are quite different aircraft. The base development, the Yakovlev Yak-7, first flew in the summer of 1942 with a Klimov M-105PF, and was delivered to the troops in October 1942. From the Yak-7D 500 aircraft were manufactured. In November 1942, the aircraft received a performance increase and was called henceforth Yakovlev Yak9/M-106. The tailwheel was now fully retracted, the canopy appears more aerodynamic than its predecessor. During the Second World War there were 14 variations, including the two-seater Yak 9UTI for training pilots. By the end of the war, over 14,000 aircraft left the the workshops. Production decreased in the postwar years but was continued. Until 1948, still more than 2,200 aircraft were produced. The Yak-9 was incidentally also used in the Korean War. The aircraft was used as fighter, fighter escort, light bomber and ground attack aircraft. The „Strela“ production Inspired by the success of the new production series of the Yakovlev Yak-3M, Yakovlev started also the production of Yak-9 fighters with the famous and more relieable Allison V-1710. For this series, produced in 1996 by Strela / Orenburg, Shadetree Aviation (Nevada) was choosed as companion. These new production aircraft got the serials 470401 up to 470409. The "kits" were delivered to Shadetree Aviation, assembled there and sold to the end customer. Again, some parts which were used to build up the new Yak-9 were produced in all production years (1942-1948). Missing parts were rebuilt on old machines and devices. 2008, the aircraft serial 470406 was purchased from Australia, wearing the civil registration VH-YXI. It was formaly painted silver, later in browngreen camouflage as „White 17“ of Major Ivan N. Stepanenko. The fighter was operated by „Tempelhof Aviators“ Berlin with the German registration code D-FAFA. As last step D-FAFA got a new delivery, this time a grey-tonecamouflage, showing Yak-9T „Red 04“, also operated by Major Stepanenko from 4.IAP. The new revised aircraft belongs to the „Air Fighter Academy GmbH“ based on the island Usedom .
