June - Howick Camera Club
Shuttertalk June 2016 c Est. 1956 Basement –Howick Bridge Club, Pakuranga Rd, Pakuranga, Auckland. www.howickcameraclub.org.nz Meetings are 1st, 3rd and 4th Mondays at 7.45pm Important P2 What’s On P2 Fungi Hunt Congratulations to Geoff for his winning entry in the ‘Shuttertalk Shootout’. Fabulous action shot! Sean’s image P9 Special competitions came a close second. (See p6) Unfortunately there were very few entries which was a bit disappointing but perhaps everybody was too busy getting images for all the other competitions. You will notice that there are no special comps for June, which is good because putting together an Audio Visual and the set of 6 for July is going to take up much of your time (P9 for details). You will note that the maximum time for an AV is 7 minutes, but in actual fact 3-5 minutes often works far better. I have just heard that there is not going to be a Nelson Triptych competition this year. Most disappointing as I was going to enter for the first time! I’m sure many others will be disappointed too. Congratulations to Bob McCree, Shona Kebble and Cornelia Schulz on their winning Images in the landscape/portrait comp. (P 8). Thanks also to Cornelia for telling us something about herself and her photography (p7). Our Fungi Hunt is on the 19th June. This is one of the best field trips of the year and there is always a good turn-out. Looking forward to seeing even more people this year. Last but not least, welcome to all the new members. It’s good to see some entering competitions straight away (and putting in some very good images too!) I was privy to a little story about two of our esteemed photographers, who slipped through the gate up at Musick Point last week and set up camp on the 14th green. The pretext that brought them to this trespassing offence at 10.30pm that night, was they thought they could get some ‘Moon Shots’, (believe it or not). Some other excuse was that they might get the Milky Way or other star shots. Whilst these two folk were attempting to photograph the night sky (so I was led to believe), who should turn up but the Security Guards, who were deeply interested in the so called excuses. They were told that they often find campers kitted out on the manicured greens looking back to the city lights. Earlier in the evening, these same two photographers were again seen in Devonport, looking across to the city lights (joined by three German youths, here on holiday, also on a shooting expedition). Our intrepid photographers then decided to wander off to Northcote Point seeing the Harbour Bridge and City lights, in a new light. Tired of the North Shore, fate moved them on to attempting light trails across ‘Spaghetti Junction’. It appears other Photographers had the same inspiration and joined our ‘trigger happy’ image makers. Rather than give them any hints on Salon Photography, our two intrepid photographers decided to move to greener pastures and hence you know the rest of the story (or rumour) To finish my ramblings, Congratulations must go to Bob Mc Cree for having been selected to join the PSNZ Honours Selection committee. Well done Bob. Till next month, happy snapping. Shuttertalk Shootout Sean Murray Sheryl Williams John Clare Cornelia Schulz Cameron Gale Les Motion Lindsay Murray Sheryl Williams 6 Profile Cornelia Schulz I was born and brought up in a small town in Germany called Stendal. I got my first little compact camera when I was 8 years old and loved to point it at everyone and everything from the day I got it. My parents soon got fed up of having to pay for random prints of all the flowers and insects in their garden. In the early 2000s I finally moved to a digital and became more interested in learning photography. I found it much better being able to see the results instantly on the screen on the back of the camera and you could try and improve the result there and then rather than having to wait for the print. For the last five years I have been taking photos with my Canon 7D though I am living in hope that the 5D mark 4 when it comes out somehow falls into my camera bag! I've only been a member at Howick Camera Club for 1.5 years now but it has grown to be a big part of why I love living in Auckland. In my career I work generally as a software engineer and translator with a keen interest in web design. I love hiking and always have my camera on hand on my walks, so naturally landscapes and nature are some of my favourite subjects. This is also one of the core reasons why I love New Zealand and its stunning nature. Other subjects I like a lot are macro and astrophotography. Two of my favourite photos are the "Bumble Bee" and "Evening Light at Bethells". I really love how fluffy and cuddly that little bumble bee looks. The light was just amazing at Bethells when some riders came along and walked their horses on the beach. 7 Glenbrook Vintage Railway The field trip this month was great fun. Fabulous weather (although too much bright sun at times) and so much to photograph! Jeff Smith These images are only a very small sample of what was on offer. Only six members turned up, but for those who wanted to go but had other commitments, I would recommend this place for its history and photo opportunities.
