The Third Annual Women’s Education & Leadership Institute
Forum will bring together business and community leaders to support
the Women’s Education & Leadership Institute (WELI). We invite you to
join us in promoting the economic prosperity of women in the Salinas
Valley through higher education. This important event will fund the WELI
program endowment, ensuring this invaluable support is available to the
women of this community for generations to come.
Featuring: Panel discussion with Lorri Koster, CEO of Mann Packing
Company, and Devry Boughner Vorwerk, Senior Policy Advisor at Akin
Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP, and moderator Adrienne Laurent, Chief
Strategic Communications Officer, Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare
System
Significance: Statistics support that a college-educated woman is more
likely to become financially self-sufficient and pursue a meaningful
career. The education level of a mother is a strong indicator of the success
her daughters and sons will have as adults. WELI provides the 4 keys:
resources, education, social support and mentorship.

Both sponsorship opportunities and individual tickets are available.
Background: Volunteer leaders identified a significant need to support
women in their pursuit of an education and career. Two lead gifts
through IMPOWER and Bruce Taylor of the Taylor family helped launch
the program. The WELI program is in its fifth year. This summer, our
150th student will graduate from the comprehensive program that
combines a scholarship award of up to $2,000, one-year of mentorship,
and participation in a three-day program focused on leadership and life
skills workshops.

MANN PACKING COMPANY
Lorri A. Koster is Chairman, CEO and a primary
shareholder of Mann Packing Company, a certified
Women’s Business Enterprise. Lorri was raised in the
agricultural industry and is the third generation of her
family to work in produce.
In 2000, Lorri was president of the board of directors
of the International Fresh Cut Produce Association,
being the first woman to chair an American produce
trade association. She is a past chairman of the
Grower Shipper Association of Central California
where she became the second woman to hold the
position.
In 2005, Lorri was named one of the industry’s top
40 produce professionals under the age of 40 by
Produce Business magazine. In 2009, she was given
an award of excellence at the United Fresh Produce
Association’s Women in Produce event. Progressive
Grocer magazine named her one of the Top 100
Women in Grocery in 2011.
On a local level, Lorri was named Outstanding Young
Citizen in 2005, and an Outstanding Young
Californian by the California Junior Chamber of
Commerce and Ag Woman of the Year by Ag Against
Hunger in 2006. In 2014, she received the National
Steinbeck Center’s Valley of the World Ag Leader
Award. In 2015 the Center for Community Advocacy
gave her their Ben Heller Award, in honor of her
advocacy for farm workers.
Lorri serves on the board of the Monterey Bay
Economic Partnership. She is a trustee at the Panetta
Institute for Public Policy. Lorri is also a member of
the Rancho Cielo Business Advisory Council, the First
Tee Board and the Business Advisory Council for CSU,
Monterey Bay’s School of Business.
Lorri has a Bachelor of Arts degree in public relations
with a minor in business marketing from California
State University, Chico. A “baseball mom” and “Forty
Niner faithful” she resides in Salinas with her husband
Tom where she loves cheering on their two boys, Jack
and Sam.
Devry Boughner Vorwerk is a senior policy advisor at
Akin Gump Law Firm, focusing on trade, investment,
and food and agriculture policy. In her current role,
Devry spearheads advocacy issues related to the
Trans-Pacific Partnership and Cuba and currently
chairs the U.S. Agriculture Coalition for Cuba, working
to normalize trade relations between the United
States and Cuba.
Devry grew up in the Salinas Valley, where she got
her introduction to the industry and gained passion
for addressing food security needs, not only of those
in her own community but also of those individuals in
other parts of the country and the world that need
access to food, which she believes is a basic human
right.
Prior to Akin Gump, Devry served as vice president of
corporate affairs for Cargill, Incorporated. During her
12 years at Cargill, Devry held key leadership roles,
including assignments in China and India. In her role
as a corporate officer, she served on the global
Corporate Affairs Leadership Team, led the company’s
International Business Relations team in Washington,
D.C., and led the Latin America Corporate Affairs
team, which included oversight for government
relations,
communications
and
corporate
responsibility work across the region.
Prior to Cargill, Devry worked in the U.S.
International Trade Commission’s Office of Industries
and as an economic advisor to the chairman. She also
served as a senior economist in Agricultural Affairs at
the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, which is
part of the Executive Office of the President.
Devry serves on several nonprofit boards, including
the board of Cultivating New Frontiers in Agriculture,
Agricultural Issues Center for the University of
California, Dyson School of Applied Economics &
Management at Cornell University, and is Chair of the
U.S. Agriculture Coalition for Cuba. In 2014 Devry
was named World Economic Forum Young Global
Leader and in 2015 she became a member of the
Economic Club of Washington.
Devry has an M.S. in agricultural economics, with a
specialization in public policy and international trade,
from Cornell University. She holds dual B.S. degrees
in agricultural economics and managerial economics
from the University of California, Davis.
