1.ON TOP TO SUPPORT CORRECTIONS & CRIMINAL JUSTICE
A few days ago, we received the great news that Hartnell College ranked 9th
Top supporting Corrections & Criminal Justice offering in California, and #1 Top
Supporting Corrections & Criminal Justice offering in California regionally, including
the San Francisco Bay Area. This is based on a calculated methodology which can
be found here http://www.correctionalofficer.org/state/california.
Congratulations to the dedicated team of instructors here at Hartnell who are not
only one of the most professional in the field, but also the most caring. Students
comment on this all the time and it is with pride that we accept such honor.
Instructor of Administration of Justice, Lindsey J. Bertomen says that since last year,
about 30 students have sent a photo in uniform or sent a photo of their badge with a
big ‘thank you.’ Our faculty and staff go above and beyond the call of duty. This
award is a true indication of that passion to help our students succeed.

2. HARTNELL’S 95TH BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK!
It was August 18, 1920 that Salinas Junior College
was established to later become Hartnell College
and then Hartnell Community College District.

3. ORIENTATIONS HELD FOR ALL NEW EMPLOYEES

It was a week filled with orientations for new employees. The presentations took
place at the Student Center and included information about the College, human
resources, the Foundation, marketing, fiscal matters, academic affairs, student affairs,
security on campus, the bookstore, IT, and so much more. Some departments were
part of the resource fair providing new employees with all they need for an easy
transition as they join the team.

Last Thursday, my wife Michele
and I hosted a gathering to
officially welcome new employees hired thus far in
2015 (Jan. – Aug. 2015). I was proud to see all the
new talent coming to Hartnell and to feel that
enthusiasm in
joining our
team. The
President’s
Executive Cabinet and Administrators in the
hires’ areas were invited to also connect with
them and guests. Governing Board members
Erica Padilla-Chavez and Demetrio Pruneda
also welcomed everyone. Welcome to all!

NEW TRIO STUDENTS GET FIRST LOOK INSIDE HARTNELL
,
TRiO opened its doors on Thursday and Friday for a
two-day orientation introducing students to the
multitude of services Hartnell College has for them. All
100 of the students present had to apply at the end
of the summer term and meet certain criteria – be a
first generation, low-income student. Once this has
been certified the students must prove they are
academically focused by providing proof of
enrollment in classes higher than Math 121 and
English 101. The process is concluded with an
interview with the director of TRiO, Manuel
Bersamin - where they explain their goals and
plans of obtaining an AA and transferring.
The two days are filled with fun and informative
activities for the students. Team building exercises
allow new
students to get
to
know each other, student panels answer many of
the questions they may have coming into Hartnell,
and the numerous workshops help get each
student off to a great start! These workshops
include financial aid, career development, and
educational planning. These students are off to a
great start and have all the tools to succeed.

6. SUMMER MATH ACADEMY ENDS WITH A CELEBRATION
The Hartnell Math Academy ended last Wednesday with a potluck, fun math games,
and a graduation on Mainstage. This summer, 206 students got over their fear of
math by participating in this organic learning community for two weeks.
Seven professors took the role of math cheerleaders and succeeded getting these
incoming freshmen prepared for the fall semester.
All students received a certificate of completion, prizes, and a shirt that reads its
motto: Eat, Sleep, Math.
The guest speaker for the day was Hartnell’s 2014
Distinguished Alumna, Patricia Anna Garcia, who
was also one of Professor Ken Rand’s students. She
shared of her struggles with math and how Rand
helped her overcome that fear. She is now a math
teacher.
It was a day filled with excitement for the students
who feel 100 times ready to take on their next math
class.
7. FIELD TRIP TO NATIONAL LAB AND SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
As part of the Hartnell College Physics Research Scholar
Institute (RSI) program, seven students and two staff
members embarked on a field trip to the Lawrence
Berkeley National Lab (LBL) and Stanford University
School of Medicine in late July.
The group visited the Molecular Foundry, a national
research center for making nano materials where they
had the opportunities to
observe the clean room
facilities, and the world's most powerful electron
microscope, which can observe the precise positions
of atoms in materials.
At Stanford, the group met up with a former Hartnell
RSI student who is doing valuable research to identify
useful chemicals for detecting x-rays. In addition,

Stanford provided an introduction to the fascinating frontier
research of imaging live single cancer cells using alpha particles
and visible light.
The field trip introduced these Hartnell students to world renowned research centers
and provided information on how to apply for externally funded internships at
National laboratories. This summer, two Hartnell students
competed successfully for externally funded internships
with LBL, where they provided their experiences to the
field trip students.
The Research Scholars Institute Physics program provides
real world hands-on research experience for Hartnell
STEM students. It provides rigorous training that equips
students to compete nationally for externally funded
research opportunities.

8. WELCOME NEW FULL-TIME FACULTY!
Dr. Lana McDonnell, Communication Studies
Dr. Lana McDonnell has been teaching
communication courses in higher education for
about 20 years. She completed a B.S in Speech
Communication from the University of Texas at
Austin; M.A. in Communication from Pittsburg State
University in Kansas; and received a Ph.D. at the
University of Texas at Austin in Communication
Studies along with a Doctoral Portfolio program in
Gender and Women's Studies. Dr. McDonnell has
taught Communication Studies at a variety of institutions including Western Governors
University and Mendocino College prior to joining Hartnell. She is the 2nd Vice Chair of
the Feminist and Women's Studies Division of the National Communication Association
and regularly presents academic work at the national and regional level. She has a
book published based on her doctoral dissertation, Mothers in Prison: Women's
Autobiography and Activism.
Dr. Mary Rayappan, Mathematics
For several years, Dr. Mary Rayappan had been
immersed in the world of mathematics – in
academics and in the IT industry. Dr.
Rayappan was educated in India, earning a
Ph.D. in Applied mathematics and a Master’s in
Business Administration. She has gained
international experience in teaching in both the
technical and managerial roles.

Dr. Rayappan has been an ardent proponent of STEM
education and career paths. She is confident that the key to our
economic future is the production of sufficient graduates to meet the STEM needs of
our companies and country. She considers this job as a precious opportunity to work
toward that end goal. For the past year, Dr. Rayappan has served as the Division
Director of the School of Allied Health, Business, and STEM at Middlesex Community
College in Connecticut.

Dr. Diane Harley, English and ESL
Dr. Diane Harley earned a B.A. in Classics (Latin)
from the University of Arizona, an M.A. in TESL
from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in
TESOL & Composition from Indiana University of
Pennsylvania. She has taught English and English
as a Second Language (ESL) to adults in the U.S.
and abroad for most of her career - most
recently in China for a U.S. university. She was
awarded two English Language Fellowships
through the U.S. Department of State, Office of
English Language Programs, in 2006-2007(SE Asia) and in 2010-2011(South Africa). She
also previously taught ESL at the community college level for five and a half years in
Wisconsin. She feels that she is well suited to the position of English/ESL instructor at
Hartnell, and plans to do her best to fulfill her
professional responsibilities in this role.
Jose Coria, Computer Science
Jose Coria has been lecturing for the last few
years at CSUMB in their School of Computing
and Design in addition to developing a mobile
application to better understand cellular
network performance in California. Jose
completed his Masters in Computer Science at
the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey,
and his undergraduate degree at UCLA. He
currently lives in Salinas with wife, Nicole Williams, and his German shepherd, Bixby.
They love being outdoors and traveling. Jose is excited to be teaching in his
community, “It's a privilege to join the faculty and staff at Hartnell in continuing to
serve the students in our area.”
Alicia Samis, Psychology
Alicia Samis joins us from Foothill College where
she taught Psychology. Alicia served as the
Interim Assistant Director of Student Conduct &
Ethical Development at San Jose State University.
In the fall of 2014, Alicia co-founded a nonprofit,
Life Beyond Freedom, which supports exonerees

(people who were wrongfully incarcerated) as they transition
back into the community. She currently serves on its Board of
Directors. While achieving her Master of Arts in Social Psychology at San Francisco
State University, Alicia managed the Psychology and Law Lab. Alicia has been the
recipient of numerous awards, including the Above and Beyond Award at San Jose
State University, Quantitative Award, Honorable Mention at California State University
Northridge, and First Place in the Annual Psychology Research Competition at
California State University Northridge.

Michael Hooper, English
Michael Hooper’s career has come full circle.
His first instructing job was at Hartnell College at
the King City Campus after falling in love with
the profession as a Teaching Assistant in the
English Literature M.A. program at SFSU. He had
also volunteered as an instructor of General
Education in a program for troubled youth in
South County. Michael has served students at
every level. Over a span of 10 years, Hooper has
been a high school English instructor, a program administrator, a department
chairperson, and a principal of a Pre-K through 8th grade school. Despite all these
roles Michael has been able to maintain adjunct professor status at several
community colleges including Hartnell. Michael is thrilled to be fulfilling his goal of
becoming a full-time professor!
Tracy Carpenter, Adaptive Physical Education
and Head Women’s Basketball Coach
Tracy Carpenter joins Hartnell full-time faculty
with 26 years of experience teaching Adapted
Physical Education and Physical Education at
every level from Elementary to University; 30
years of Junior High School, High School,
College, and Professional Basketball Coaching;
and Track and Field Coaching experience.
Tracy attended Gavilan College where he studied Physical Education and was the
captain of the basketball team. He then went on to receive his Bachelor’s degree in
Physical Education from CSU Stanislaus, where he lettered in Basketball, Track and
Field, and Cross Country. From there he attended San Jose State to obtain his Life PE
teaching Credential and attended University of the Pacific for his Master’s Degree.
Nicholas Pasquale, Mathematics
Although this is Nicholas Pasquale’s first year as
a tenure track, full-time faculty member, this will
be his second year at Hartnell College. Prior to
coming to Hartnell, Nicholas taught algebra
through calculus for 9 years at the high school

level. He considers teaching a vocation, and despite being a
self-proclaimed math nerd, his passion is working with students.
He is excited to continue developing curriculum that meets the needs of the college
community and his energy to work hard is bolstered by the enthusiasm of his students.
Nicholas most recently showed off dedication to students by working as an instructor
for the Summer Math Academy.

Samuel Pacheco, History
Samuel Pacheco has taught at Hartnell on a part-time
basis since 2002 and last year, he was a full-time
Temporary Instructor. He has taught at Monterey
Peninsula College and CSUMB. In addition, he was
Coordinator of Educational Talent Search at CSUMB
from 2000 -2014, a federal program that assisted high
school students from Monterey County in attending
college.
He graduated with a B.A. in History from San Jose State
and a M.A. in History from Cal State Hayward. He has
two children, Grabriel (16), and Anais (12).
“I am excited to be a full-time Instructor and Hartnell, I wouldn't want to be anywhere
else,” he said.
Jamie Pedroza, Kinesiology and Head Women’s
Volleyball Coach
Kinesiology Instructor and Volleyball Coach, Jamie
Pedroza will now be with us on a full-time basis.
Pedroza has accepted a full-time position here at
Hartnell College after serving the athletics department
for seven years as an adjunct professor and coach.
Every year Jamie has helped to make the team
stronger, making Hartnell College one of the top
athletic programs in Northern California.
Mark Dehart, Diesel Technology
Mark DeHart is our new Diesel Tech Professor at the
Alisal Campus. He is excited to teach our students the
skills necessary to be a great mechanic. He was
adjunct professor at Heald College and recently retired
from the U.S. Army where he was a Staff Sergeant,
Active Duty Instructor in diesel mechanics. He has a
Master’s in Business Administration Management and a
Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice Administration
Management from University of Phoenix.

9.A SURPRISE PARTY FOR YOURS TRULY
My wife Michele told me a few months ago to not book anything on Saturday, August
8, 2015 because she wanted a day for ‘us.’ I did not protest. So when the day arrived
and she packed an overnight bag for me and blind folded me into Salinas, I knew this
was going to be a great day!
To my surprise, and yes, it was a good one – family, friends, colleagues, and industry
partners faced me as the blind fold came off at the Salinas Storm House. This was my
60th Birthday bash orchestrated by Michele and my 3 children with a baseball theme.
I had no idea, especially because my actual birthday is in September!
It was such an emotional moment to see everyone there from my childhood to the
present. I had lots of fun and really enjoyed spending time with all.
Thank you for attending and for donating to three of my favorite organizations in lieu
of gifts.
10. ANDY MATSUI’S EXTREME KINDNESS
Just a couple of weeks ago, Andy Matsui gave over $1
million to Cohort 3 students in the CSin3 program; but his
kindness does not stop there. He takes time out of his
busy schedule to stop by my office to deliver beautiful

orchids. He does this often and we are so appreciative of his
love for Hartnell. Thank you Andy!

11. ALUM FELIX CERVANTES RECIPIENT OF MAJOR SCHOLARSHIP
Congratulations to former Panther Felix Cervantes
(Everett Alvarez HS) the 2015 Arnie Robinson Male
Scholarship Recipient. Felix was selected based on
his excellent athletic and academic achievements
while at Hartnell College. As part of his selection, he
explained how attending and participating at a CA
community college positively influenced his life. Felix
was a double all-conference cross country runner
and helped the 2013 team to a third place Norcal
team finish and 10th place at state. He
was a Norcal qualifier in the 1500 meters as a sophomore and helped
the Panthers to back-to-back Coast Conference team titles. Felix just
departed for McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas.
Congratulations and good luck Felix!
12. SOCCER FIELD RENOVATION IS DONE – BUT SETTING IN
The soccer field renovation has been completed and it looks great. It is now in the
process of setting in and will not be utilized until September 14, 2015.

13. REFINISHED FLOORS FOR AUXILIARY AND MAIN GYMNASIUMS
The gymnasium floors have been refinished and look fabulous. This is part of our
ongoing efforts to ensure that our facilities are maintained at a high level. The floors
are ready for instruction and intercollegiate athletics this fall.
14. UPCOMING EVENTS
SAVE THE DATE!
Cinco de Mayo Celebration in King City
For the first time, Monterey County Pops! will participate in the festivities in King City
which celebrate Mexican Independence Day. The
celebration is traditionally called "El Grito" that refers
to Miguel Hidalgo's rallying cry uttered on September
16, 1810, which began the Mexican War of
Independence.
This year "El Grito" will be celebrated in King City on
Sunday, September 13, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. starting
with a parade up Broadway to the Town Square.
The concert that follows, will feature the 40-member,
fully professional Monterey County Pops! ensemble
of woodwinds, brass and percussion led by Hartnell retiree Dr.
Carl Christensen. He will present a program of traditional music
from various regions of Mexico. The concert will recreate the
atmosphere of countless town band concerts given on Sunday
afternoon in city plazas and parks all over Mexico. The program
will include special arrangements of such traditional favorites as
"Cielito Lindo", "La Cucaracha", "Guadalajara", and "La Marcha
Zacatecas."

A highlight of the program will be "Huapango" by Jose Pablo
Moncayo featuring well-known local Jalisco harp virtuoso, and
Hartnell adjunct music instructor, William Faulkner.
