This has been an important year for Long Island University. Focusing on potential and
matriculated students, LIU launched a rebranding and marketing campaign in which
the institution actively challenges each student to “Find out how good you really are.”
In addition, the University has sought to link more closely every campus and program,
Tilles Center, Kumble Theater and its many other departments into a unified, coherent
whole. Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, in particular, reinforces LIU’s educational
mission, bringing world-class performances and performers to the students of LIU
Post, as well as the citizens of Long Island. Tilles Center educates, entertains and enriches both its internal
audience of students and the external universe of the people of Long Island. It has a complex and dynamic
mission, one that has transformed for the better the life of the community and the quality of education that is
provided on the campus.
Dr. David J. Steinberg
President, Long Island University
It is with great pleasure that I address you after another successful year presenting
the very best in the performing arts to the Long Island community. One highlight
of the season was our annual Gala. Thanks to the dedication of our honoree,
longtime Tilles Center supporter of Dance at Tilles Center, Eric Krasnoff, we had
an extremely successful event. Long Island’s own Idina Menzel wowed the audience
with a beautiful and exciting performance.
As usual, the entire season brought world-class performances from around the
world to our audiences. Another highlight was our Endowment Concert featuring The Midtown Men. Building
an endowment that will help ensure the future of Tilles Center and help to maintain affordable ticket prices is
a priority as we move forward. Each year, our Endowment Concert helps in this commitment to the future.
We are fortunate that we have a loyal group of corporate and individual sponsors, annual fund contributors
and government and foundation grants, which gave us critical support. Our annual golf and tennis outing,
Swing for Kids, honored Martin Silver, CEO and President of Star Industries, Inc. and Jordan Ziegler, Esq.,
a partner with Pasternack Tilker Ziegler Walsh Stanton & Romano LLP, and raised critical funds for our
Arts Education program.
As always, I am grateful for the support of our Council of Overseers whose dedication to Tilles Center
continues to provide valuable guidance and support throughout the season.
Tilles Center for the Performing Arts reflects LIU Post’s enduring commitment to
integrating arts and culture into the lives of college students and the public at large.
Its world-class performances, educational programs, and community outreach
manifest in a myriad of ways. For aspiring actors, singers, musicians, and dancers
from our School of Visual and Performing Arts (SVPA), the facility is a consummate
training ground for our students, presenting the opportunity to perform on the same
stage as the greatest artists of our day. Tilles Center and SVPA master classes for
LIU Post students provide the value of personal instruction from leading performers such as the Shanghai
Quartet, the New York Philharmonic and New York Voices/Manhattan Transfer. The facility’s magnificent atrium
is the setting for college career fairs, lectures by renowned guests, student awards ceremonies, and special
art and historic exhibitions. For the public, Tilles Center hosts an impressive trove of more than a hundred
performances each year, from Broadway shows to ballets to celebrity entertainers.
For all these reasons I’m proud to call Tilles Center for the Performing Arts a source of great pride, dynamic
entertainment and vibrant learning to the LIU Post community — and a treasure for Long Island.
Paul Forestell, Ph.D.
Provost, LIU Post, LIU Brentwood, LIU Riverhead
John R. Bransfield, Jr.
Chairman, Tilles Center Council of Overseers
Our 31st season in 2011-12 was an adventure of global proportions. Under the banner
“A World of Great Music, Dance, and Theater,” we presented artists and attractions
from six continents—from virtually every corner of the world. From Israel’s Ariel
Quartet to the Dinosaur Petting Zoo of Australia, from the Golden Dragon Acrobats
of China to Latin music icon Rubén Blades, Tilles Center offered our audiences a
mind-expanding world tour. Our youngest patrons were issued an official “Family
Passport,” which could be stamped at a lobby booth to show the new places and
cultures they encountered over the year. Of course, there’s still no place like home. Our thirty-first Gala
featured Long Island’s own Broadway star Idina Menzel; Judy Collins and Arlo Guthrie joined voices in
“Home for the Holidays” in December, and Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers closed the season
with a sold-out evening of bluegrass and comedy over the Memorial Day weekend.
