Thanks to a rubber hose and
a kind and creative businessman, Mary Mclnerney can get
around Yorktown under her
own steam once again. ,
After she shattered a glass
door by bumping it with her
motorized wheelchair as she
tried to open it, she was afraid
to drive the scooter again.
For two months, Mclnerney
searched for some way to cushion the impact if she were to
have another accident. She
called wheelchair manufacturers, medical equipment suppliers and others, but no one
was able, or willing, to help.
"Or they implied that it
would be a $2,000 job, like
something on the Queen
Mary," Mclnerney said. "For
days I was crying, thinking,
'Who else can I call?'"
Then one day Carla Pellicci
came to Beaveridge, the apartment complex for senior citizens and people with /disabilities where Mclnerney lives.
Pellicci works for Westchester
C o u n t y Executive'. Andrew
O'Rourke in the Northern
County Citizen Services Office
in Peekskill.
"Mrs. Mclnerney came to
me, quite distressed," Pellicci
said. "We sat there and brainstormed."
Finally, Pellicci grabbed a
telephone directory, opened it
to auto body shops and called
the first one she found.
"A young man answered,"
she said. "I related the story to
him, and he said, Til be there
in 20 minutes.' "
Joe Adrian Jr., owner of
Adrian Auto Body on Crompond Road in Y o r k t o w n ,
showed up, studied the scooter
and .Borrowed the building superintendent's tools to remove
a piece from the front of it.
Three hours later he had devised and installed a bumper
built from a piece of radiator
hose.

Mary Mclnerney, who lives in the Beaveridge senior citizens
complex in Yorktown, is able to use her motorized scooter again
after the county executive's outreach office succeeded in finding
an auto body shop to invent a protective bumper for the scooter's
front rail. Mclnerney had stopped using her scooter after she
crashed into the complex's glass door two months ago.
The bumper restored Mclnerney's confidence and her
mobility. It made it possible for
her to get around without calling — and waiting for — the
county's Paratransit service.
Adrian said he didn't think
twice about helping out.
"Everybody needs friends,
everybody has feelings, everybody needs to get things done,"
he said. "I've been here'24
years. I've got no plans to
leave. She's part of my coinmunity. Also, I'm very fortunate
wifh mv VionltVi

people and respect their problems."
Mclnerney and Adrian did
have an argument —- she said
she insisted on giving Adrian
$30, and he said he didn't want
to take it. Mclnerney prevailed
(she said she threatened to
cry). She said she didn't want
to be beholden if she had to
ask him for help again.
"I'm just so gratefal to him
and to Carla," she said. "Thank
