SC ACTE – HSE Division Annual Conference
When: December 4- 6, 2014 Where: Myrtle Beach
Our conference in Myrtle Beach this year sure was a change of pace from last year. The
change in the time of year to hold our annual meeting was a good decision. The weather
was great and there were lots of perks to changing that the attendees enjoyed. Free
parking, free WiFi and not to mention many conference attendees were able to do some
Christmas shopping in the evening as stores stayed open later at this time of year. We
began our conference on Thursday, December 4, 2014, with registration and warm coffee
and muffins. Angel Clark, SCDE Health Science Education Associate, gave a brief update on
what’s new for health science and HOSA. Our conference opening keynote speaker, Dr.
Linda Karges Bone was a hit with her presentation “The Challenge of Motivation: Surfing the
Brain Waves to Successful Health”
After our keynote address during our awards luncheon, the executive committee had
opening remarks and announcements. Attendance was good and there was a great
audience to witness the winners of our division awards. The 2014-15 SC Health Science
Educators Division winners were announced and awarded plaques:
Teacher of the Year
-Shana Lee
Outstanding New Health Science Teacher - Teresa Hayden
Outstanding Health Science Teacher in Community Service - Katrina Haynes
Champion Advocate of the Year - Rhonda Evatt

that were recognized during the luncheon for these awards included:

President 2013-14 Susie Burgess
Our Thursday afternoon general sessions included hearing from a few of our vendors. We
want to make sure that we thank all of our vendors for participating in the conference this
year. The teachers really enjoyed learning about the new materials and being able to ask
them questions about programs and textbooks they were offering. We appreciate Pass
Assured, Today’s Class, and Cengage partially sponsoring some of the delicious food that
the participants had an opportunity to partake in.
The afternoon sessions included presentations by:
Nick Milasnovich – Pass Assured – “The Pharmacy Technician Program”
Dr. Carrie Tucker – White Knoll High School – “What Page Is It On?”
Diane Yeager – Electronic Health Records – “The Challenge, the Solutions”
Peggy Albano - Today’s Class – “Team Based Learning”

With our brains full…we adjourned for the day to rest our noggins and to come back for
more learning tomorrow.
Friday, December 5th , started with a continental breakfast, welcome and announcements.
For the first half of the day, group A of the conference participants were treated to the
energetic and the sensible Starla Ewan of “Hands on Body Systems” . Starla, gave them lots
of classroom management skills while teaching how life begins and the neural and physical
process that goes with that…all with the help of clay.

After the silent auction we held the business meeting for SC HSE where there was one
position up for nomination. (President-Elect) One person was nominated for 2015-16
President – Elect position, a quorum of members voted and the motion carried to elect
Shana Lee to this position. The new officers are listed below.
Before our SC HSE business meeting we welcomed keynote speaker, Dr. Teresa Hamm, an
instructional coach from Pendleton High School. Dr. Hamm’s keynote address is titled “CTE
is the new AP: The Journey That Moves Us Forward.” Dr. Hamm was energetic, engaging
and had a lot of information to share about the career and technology pathways. So for us,
this hit home.
