Seen by seven million people so far, Susan Hill’s
acclaimed ghost story comes dramatically to life in
Stephen Mallatratt’s ingenious stage adaptation. This
gripping production is a brilliantly successful study in
atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror.
A lawyer obsessed with a curse that he believes has
been cast over him and his family by the spectre of a
woman in black, engages a sceptical young actor to
help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear
that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but
then, as they reach further into his darkest memories,
they find themselves caught up in a world of eerie
marshes and moaning winds.
“The most brilliantly effective spine-chiller you will
ever encounter.” DAILY TELEGRAPH
“The sexiest, most sensational musical.”

“Today I saw 16 swans. God, what
beauty!” Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony
begins with a radiant dawn – and ends
with a majestic hymn to that vision
of nature at its most glorious. It’s the
perfect counterpart to the glowing
melodies and gypsy dances of Brahms’s
sunlit Violin Concerto, played by the
brilliant Baiba Skride – and the overture
to Mozart’s great Roman drama gets
things off to a stirring start.
Everybody knows the first four notes
of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. But
if that’s all you know, you’re in for the
ride of your life. And because genius
loves company, conductor Domingo
Hindoyan has paired it with Wagner’s
storm-tossed musical seascape – you
can almost feel the spray! – and a real
Russian fairy tale: Prokofiev’s glittering
First Violin Concerto.
Schubert Overture, Rosamunde
Mozart Sinfonia Concertante For

Elgar Symphony No. 1
When Elgar’s First Symphony was
premiered, the audience leapt to their
feet and cheered. Over a century later,
there’s still nothing in English music
that quite compares to this sweeping
emotional epic. First, though, enjoy
Schubert’s Viennese whirl of an overture
and Mozart’s magnificent double
concerto.

We use an infrared system in the main
auditorium for our hearing-impaired
customers. When booking tickets, please ask
our Box Office staff for advice on the best
seating for these systems.
Getting here and parking
For more information, see the Access section of
our website, or speak to our Box Office team.
Location: The Marlowe Theatre is situated in the
centre of Canterbury, within 10–15 minutes walk
of both Canterbury Train stations, and the Bus
Station.
Parking: There is no public parking on site. We
offer a limited number of parking spaces for
customers who are Blue Badge holders. These
are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
For details of local car parks, and Park and
Rides, see our website or visit
Canterbury.gov.uk/parking
The car park nearest to the theatre is Pound
Lane. This car park now operates a pay when
you return to your car system, using cameras
and barriers. We recommend customers wishing
to use this car park set up an online account at
canterbury.gov.uk/ticketless. This removes the
need to queue for a machine when the show ends.
