During the week’s workshops, exploration into
all the component parts of ballet is made,
music, mime, painting and drama, as well

express narrative and mood are investigated and music is
exploited as a tool to enhance this. Various dance steps,
styles and rhythms lend themselves to complex chains of
movement which, together with aspects of mime and dramatic expression, contribute ultimately to the culmination
of the week’s work, a performance held onstage in a professional theatre environment and open to the public.
The subject of the Ballet Ireland Summer School 2006 is a
take on a Hans Christian Anderson favourite, ‘Ugly Duck!’
theme.
Participation in the programme is open to all performers,

film
Sunday 11 June 8.30pm
Big Wednesday
Directed by
John Milius, USA, 1977, 102 mins
The tale of a group of friends drifting through the sixties and seventies,
getting into scrapes, having parties,
trying to avoid Vietnam and doing
all that stuff sixties movies live for.
The episodic format, a series of brief
snapshots taken from various moments over a spread of
ten years or so helps capture the rambling nature of these
people’s lives and gives an insight on how much things
change and yet stay the same between a gang of old
friends as the times move on and the world turns.

Come Surf With Me
Directed by Rod Sumpter , UK, 1967,
85 mins, CLUB
Veteran surfer Rod Sumpter’s
1960s film Come Surf With Me
follows surfing greats as they
charter virgin territory on the North Cornish Coast, Ireland
and France and some of the best international surfing
spots in the world. It also shows Rod in action in the freezing and snow-covered Bay of Fundy in Canada, and in
action when he surfed 4 to 6 miles on the Severn Bore in
Gloustershire, which was entered in the Guinness Book of
Records in 1968.
Come Surf With Me has a huge nostalgic factor for anyone
who lived through the time as well as plenty of techniques
for the modern generation of enthusiasts who are being
shown the roots of their beloved sport and loving every
minute of it. It is an important record which documents
the history of surfing in Cornwall, Ireland and France and
shows how today’s standard moves and equipment were
pioneered, tried, developed and practised to perfection.
It is a film that shouldn’t be missed.

Dogtown and Z-boys
Directed by Stacy Peralta,
USA, 2001, 89 mins, CLUB
Stacy Peralta’s (Riding Giants)
documentary on his formative
time among a clique of straggly teen drop-outs who
turned skateboarding on its head makes a compelling
case that, where riding four-wheeled planks of wood is
concerned, the guys were the birth of cool.
Back in the ‘70s, Dogtown was a rundown ocean-front district where hardened surfers honed their skills amid the detritus of the Pacific Ocean Park pier and skated when they
couldn’t surf, emulating their wave-wending moves on
any available tarmac slope. When a drought emptied the
swimming pools, the gang jumped on the exposed testing
grounds, gyrating higher up pool walls until they learned
to flip over the lip and pivot in mid-air.
Narrated with suitable casualness by Sean Penn, it’s an
enthralling story laden with archive footage and insider
testimony, displayed with a fast-cutting, full-on swagger
the material quickly justifies. - Nick Bradshaw, Time Out.
Winner - Audience Award (Documentary) / Sundance Film Festival
The movie has an infectious exuberance that will engage anyone
with a passing interest in the skate/surf culture. - Glenn Whipp, Los
