A Caring Community Which Values and Fosters the Worth and Lifestyle of All
Volume 191
May 2012
Theme of the Month: “Enjoy Outdoors”
Community Connection: Kitchener Minor Baseball
“Caring for Yourself, Others and the Environment.”
How time fly’s the older we get
the quicker it gets. Speaking of time I
watched a show the other night “Canadian Pickers”
and an old Pequegnat Clock had been found. When
they opened the back of the clock it stated that it
was made by the Arthur Pequegnat Clock Company
in Berlin (Kitchener). Ulysses Pequegnat, a member
of the Watchmakers’ Guild in Chaux-de-Fond,
Switzerland with his wife and their thirteen sons
and daughters came to Berlin in 1874. All 8 sons
adopted their father’s vocation – the first location was
opened in Mr. Lautenschlager’s block at 68 E. King
Street in 1903. Now when you drive by Pequegnat
St. (off King E between Frederick between Gorden
and Chestnut, close to Centre in the Square) you can
remember a time when time telling was manufactured
in Kitchener.
Last month I had the pleasure of attending the
“Getting Older, Getting Wiser – Building Communities
for an Aging Population” The Keynote presenter
was Hazel McCallion – Your Worship - “Hurricane
Hazel”. The Mayor of Mississauga, elected since
1978, serving her 12 term and retiring in 2014. Hazel
is Canada’s longest serving mayors and she is one of
the longest serving elected leaders in history. Hazel
has lead Mississauga in being a debt free city since
1978.
Hazel is 91 years of age and is a ball of energy and
speaks so passionately about Mississauga and the
Greater Toronto Area.
The previous week we held our Trinity Village
Management Retreat and discussed leadership –
one exercise was to tell one another who you would
call a leader and Hazel needs to be added to the
list. She is a role model for many – seniors, women,
politicians, and volunteers.
Hazel states “Volunteers make the city livable,
nobody can do everything but everybody can do
something.” She is also a supporter of the “Youth
Volunteer Challenge, Healing Cycle, and the Hazel
McCallion Volunteer of the Year Award” to name a
few.
Arthur Pequegnat was also a dedicated volunteer
– Benton St. Baptist Church Building Committee,
Superintendent of the “Model School” a school
for Teachers-in-Training which today is known as
Suddaby School, Board Deacon, School Trustee,
Board of Education Chairman 9 years, member
27 years, and Sewer Commission (first in Canada)
member.
Hazel McCallion
Volunteers give of their time your work makes a
positive difference in the lives of our residents,
families, staff and our community - “When you
invest in your community you make an investment in
yourself.”
Respectfully yours,
Debby Riepert, Chief Operating Officer

No Abuse
“Every resident of Trinity Village has the right to be protected from abuse”
What does this mean?
No one is allowed to abuse you physically, financially, sexually, verbally, or
emotionally.
Physical Abuse is when someone assaults you, handles you roughly, or slaps,
pushes, or beats you. It is also physical abuse when someone refuses to give
you medicine that you should take, or gives you medication that you should
not be taking.
Financial Abuse is when someone takes your money or property by fraud,
theft, force, or by tricking you. If anybody forces you to sell or give away
your property, or takes your money or possessions without your permission,
what they are doing is financial abuse.
Sexual Abuse is when someone forces upon you any type of sexual activity
that you do not want. It may be inappropriate touching, sexual exploitation,
or comments. Sexual abuse happens if, for example, a staff member or other
person in authority has a sexual relationship with you, shows you indecent
materials, or looks at your naked body when that is not part of their job.
Verbal Abuse is when someone calls
you names, yells at you, or speaks to
you in a way that scares, belittles, or
threatens you.
Emotional Abuse is when someone
threatens, insults, or frightens you, or
says or does something that humiliates
you. This kind of abuse may make you
feel lonely, ignored, or as if you are
being treated like a child.

Message from the Chaplains
May is a wonderful time of year, the flowers are coming up after a long
winters sleep; the birds are busy building nests; and people will start to
enjoy the warm spring sun. We can see the people outside cleaning up the
gardens, planting new flowers. Yes, May is a wonderful month.
The Spiritual Care office is here to support you while you are here at Trinity
Village and I could not do it all. I have a wonderful group of dedicated
porters and pianists who take their own time to be with us and help put
whenever we need them.
While we are always happy to have new volunteers to porter, right now we
are especially on the look out for new volunteers to play the piano for us.
It is very flexible and does not require a professional! We would be most
grateful for someone who could play even the melody! Please seriously
consider whether God might be calling you to bless the residents of Trinity
Village with your gift of music ministry. We would be most grateful for any
help – even once a month would make a real difference. If you might be
interested, please get in touch with Chaplain Ralph for more details about
the schedule. If not and you know someone else who might be willing?
Pass this request on!
Thank you so much for your help in enriching the ministry here at Trinity
Village!

Oh, sweet, sweet Chef
Iron Chef Competition 2012- Just Desserts!
Something new came to Trinity on March
29th, the Sweet Iron Chef contest.
No, it wasn’t to find out who the sweetest
chef was but rather to explore the Iron Chef
in dessert version. That meant preparing the
dessert which most pleased four judges from
Sysco, our food supplier, and 50 or so lucky
residents and family who attended in the
Gathering Place. Not an easy task for anyone
but our respective Iron Chefs as always were
up to the job (remember they shared the title
last year- so it’s Iron Chefs or maybe half an
Iron Chef each).
The long-term care centre’s Bruce Hagen
(with his son, Cole) vied with the Studios’
Brenda Burke and Christine Reicheld. Bruce
offered banana crepes prepared on the spot
featuring banana filling a with whipped cream,
strawberry and kiwi slice garnish while Christine
presented baked apples with puffed whipped
cream filling, slivered almonds and a blackberry
sauce on a pastry base with a yellow gooseberry.
Now you’ve looked (don’t you wish you could
taste?)- consider the results? Best Presentationthe Studios’
baked apple.
Best TasteBruce’s
banana
crepes. Net
result- a win
for the Studios by 102 to 93 votes. Things aren’t
over, though: we’ll see who’s sweetest next year.
Cole and Bruce await another chance against
Christine and Brenda

Music
Music has been used as a healing force for
centuries. Music therapy goes back to biblical
times, when David played the harp to rid King
Saul of a bad spirit. Aristotle described music as
a force that purified the emotions. Today music
fills the hallways of TVCC-Freeport site. We
would like to thank TVC-Studios for donating
their Piano. Not only has it brought us music
it is a beautiful decoration for the Dining room.
It has brought out many memories for all. We
would like to thank Colette for the beautiful
picture and Elaine for the Royal Dolton Figurine.
Music makes the world go around!

Caregiver Support Group Update
“Alexander Graham Bell said, “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long
and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us.”
It can be a bit like the above quote when it comes to the journey with Alzheimer’s and Dementia,
as there are so many changes along the course of these diseases. Doors close and new doors
open that we never imagined. Being flexible to move into the next phase with all the frustrations
and joys that come with it helps Caregivers cope in the long run. A support group is a great way to
share these joys and frustrations with others in a similar situation.
At our Group this month we talked about responsive behaviours associated with dementia and
Alzheimer’s and how Trinity’s new Behaviour Support Team is going to be working with resident’s,
families and staff to augment a supportive environment for those resident’s exhibiting responsive
behaviours. A responsive behaviour is such things as wandering, verbally/physically aggressive
behaviours, socially inappropriate or disruptive behaviours and/or resistance to care. Trinity’s Behaviour Support Team consists of an RN, Esther Lamptey and a PSW, Paula Donnelly.
Our next Caregiver Support Group will be held on Thursday May 3, 2012 at 1:15 pm in the TVCC
Boardroom. We welcome Charlotte from Kitchener Waterloo Alzheimer’s Society who will do a
presentation to the group from her “BrainFit” series. All spouses and caregivers are welcome to
join this supportive and informative group.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Caregiver Support Group please contact the
Social Worker Heather Jackson at 519-893-6320 ext 292.

A Wonderful Volunteer Recognition Night
Electronics Event Update
We were glad to see that the cool weather
didn’t seem to keep people away from our
event. Over the course of the 3-day event,
we had over 100 visitors. For many it was
their first time to Trinity Village, so it also gave
us a wonderful opportunity to tell people
about us and the services we offer. In all,
we collected over 525 electronic devices for
recycling. Computer accessories, such as
keyboards, routers, mouse, was the most
common category of electronics dropped off
(90+) Other top donations included: VCR/
DVD players (58), computer (47), monitors (49),
printers (52), telephones and televisions, 70 of
each. The total amount of dollars we raised
has not yet been calculated by Greentec but
we will ensure an update is provided in next
month’s Villager.
THE DIRT ON DIRT:
better make that SOIL!
Soil is the foundation of any garden, but especially of the
organic garden. Building and maintaining soil biology,
or life, should be a cornerstone of organic gardening.
Healthy soil in turn supports plant growth, weed
suppression, and pest and disease resistance.
Beneath our feet in the garden, there is a world of
activity! In just one teaspoon of healthy soil live millions
of bacteria, approximately 10 metres of beneficial fungal
filaments and many other micro-organisms. All this life
is busily aerating the soil, breaking down organic matter,
which in turn strengthens the structure and fertility of the
soil.
Get to know your soil, and then start to amend and
improve it. It will not happen immediately, but will take
some time and patience.
There are a few things to consider.
Soil composition:
Do the squeeze test. After you moisten a handful of soil,
squeeze it in your hand. Open your hand, and check
how and whether the soil falls apart. If it disintegrates
immediately, you probably have too much sand; if it holds
its shape after giving it a poke, it is mostly clay (high in
nutrients, but not easy for roots to penetrate), and if it falls
apart after poked, then it is probably about right.
Thank you to everyone that participated in
this event and volunteered their time. A
special thank you to the TVT resident who
was instrumental in helping us deal with a very
uncooperative bin.
Green Team
Meeting Second Thursday of the Month 2:00 at
The Studios.
Organic matter:
Compare the colour of the topsoil to the colour of the
subsoil. The topsoil should be considerably darker.
Tilth or compaction:
When soil has good tilth, a shovel will easily cut into it.
The soil will not be compacted, but will crumble easily.
Drainage:
Drainage is not always consistent across a garden site.
To test drainage in a particular area, dig a hole one foot
deep by one foot diameter, and fill it with water. If it dries
quickly (in less than 10 minutes), it is too sandy, while if it
takes over 3 hours to drain, the clay content is too high. If
the water drains in 10-30 minutes, then consider the soil
to be draining well.
The addition of compost material in a garden is always
welcome, especially as we consider some of these
issues.
Karen, Garden Coordinator
Please watch for our upcoming plant sale during the
latter part of May and early June. The residents have
been very busy, planting and taking care of a variety of
vegetables, annual flowers, and some houseplants.
If you are thinning perennials, we would be happy to
pot them up for our sale.
Your support is
always appreciated!
