SPCA Serving Erie County Girl Scout Patch Program Leader’s Guide Daisy Level Requirement SPCA Serving Erie County 205 Ensminger Road Tonawanda, NY 14150 (716) 799-‐8651 [email protected] YourSPCA.org Girl Scout Patch Program Description The Girl Scout Patch Program consists of four levels: Daisy, Brownie, Junior, and Cadette/Senior. At each level, girls do a variety of age-‐appropriate activities that teach them about being responsible animal advocates. All activities are done during troop meetings or at home. The last activity the troop will do is visit the SPCA for a tour. To schedule a tour, the troop leader should call 716-‐799-‐8651. Tours are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm. Cost per girl is $8. Cash or checks (made payable to SPCA Serving Erie County) are accepted. Please call at least one month in advance. All programs include a special tour of our facility, including the dog kennels, the cat room, the small animals, and the educational farm. Tours last approximately one hour. Special SPCA patches will be issued after all activities and the tour is completed. In order for the girls to earn the SPCA Patch, the following must occur: The girls must complete all required activities before coming for the tour. The girls must come to the tour prepared to talk and answer questions about the activities they did. The troop leader should completely fill out the Patch Program Evaluation Form and turn it in at the beginning of the tour. Leaders: Please review the following with your troop before introducing the activities: What is the SPCA Serving Erie County? The mission of the SPCA is to create a caring and kind community that encourages fair and humane treatment of all creatures. Our knowledgeable, caring, and open-‐minded team of staff and volunteers achieves that mission through proactive efforts to address the current status of animals in our community, education of adults and children, rescue and sheltering of animals in need, and placement of animals into appropriate homes. The SPCA does not receive any funding from the county, city, state, or federal governments. We do not receive tax dollars of any kind . . . we’re only able to assist the people and pets in need thanks to donations. The SPCA cares for approximately 12,000 animals each year through programs that include adoptions; admissions; animal rescues; animal emergency transports; stray lost and found services; animal cruelty investigations and seizures; care for wildlife, reptiles, exotics, and farm animals; and much more. Daisy Girl Scout Level Daisy Girl Scouts must complete three of the five activities listed below, as well as visit the SPCA for a tour. See page 1 for tour details. 1. Safety around dogs is important! To complete this activity, please download this book available as a free download for one week. http://info.drsophiayin.com/how-‐to-‐greet-‐a-‐dog-‐ebook/ This will help the scouts learn how to stay safe when meeting a dog. Have your troop practice what they have learned using a stuffed dog. One person will pretend to be the owner while the other troop members demonstrate how to follow the steps to stay safe. What does the word protect mean? It means to keep something safe. It is normal for dogs to protect things. Name four things that a dog might protect. What should we do if we see a dog protecting something? (Even if the dog is YOUR dog?) Leave him alone! Why? What might a dog do if he thinks you are trying to take something he is protecting? 2. Collect donation items from our wish list! The SPCA depends on donations and kind people’s generosity to care for the animals that come to us. The SPCA does not receive any funding from the county, city, state, or federal governments. Our humane society does not receive tax dollars of any kind . . . we’re only able to assist the people and pets in need thanks to donations. The SPCA is a local humane society, not financially supported by, or a part of, any other local or national animal welfare group. We are not a branch of the ASPCA. There is no cost to surrender an animal to the SPCA and there is no adoption time limit here! However, we do ask for a donation when an animal is surrendered to us. This donation enables us not only to provide continued care for surrendered animals, but it allows us to help more and more animals every day. Ask your parents, friends, and neighbors to donate one or more items from our list, something that helps us care for the animals and then bring the items you collected with you when you come for your tour. The animals will love you for it! See the wish list at the back of this guide. 3. Color the Dog Write a sentence describing what the SPCA does. Share this with a friend or family member as a gift. 4. What is a pet? Name a few examples of animals that we normally keep as pets. A pet is an animal that lives with us, an animal that we take care of. A pet is a member of our family. How do you treat the members of your family? How do you treat your pet? Pets can’t get things for themselves so we have to make sure they have what they need. What does a pet need? Food, water, shelter, grooming, training, love veterinary care, and exercise. What are wild animals? Where do they live? Name some wild animal examples. Each Daisy should complete the activity sheet. 5. Read and Report-‐The More You Know! There is always more to learn about the animals in our world. Go to a local library and check out books on pets and pet care. Share what you learned with a friend. Fill out the activity sheet. Staying Safe Around Dogs is Easy!
