Sarah McLachlan School of Music (SoM)
NEW APPLICANTS for FALL 2013
PARTNERING SCHOOL: FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
GENERAL NOTICE
A. Grade 3 to grade 7 students will attend an experiential field trip at SoM.
B. Grade 3 to grade 6 students will be eligible to apply to the Junior classes of our Fall Program held at 200 – 138
East 7th Avenue.
C. Grade 7 students will be eligible to apply to our Senior classes of our Fall Program. It is important to note that
even if grade 7 students are not going to be attending one of our senior partner schools (Van Tech, Britannia, Tupper,
Gladstone, King George or John Oliver) they will NOT have to submit a Letter of Reference. We will defer back to you
at Florence Nightingale to determine their eligibility into our program. Just as we will for all other Florence
Nightingale students who apply to our program in the fall.
D. Grade 1 and grade 2 students applying or re-applying to our HSBC Music Fundamentals Program (that takes place
at Florence Nightingale) will get separate Application or Re-Application Forms specific to HSBC Program when they
return from spring break. The HSBC Program is completely separate from the programs that occur at our location. It
is important to know that children in the HSBC Program do not automatically qualify for our Junior Programs at 138
East 7th Avenue.
E. All new children applying to any of our programs will go through a two-tier process. The first component will be
to determine if the applicants qualify based on our mandate to serve at-risk children (financially, socially or
emotionally). For this part we rely on our partnering schools to help us know who those candidate are. Qualifying
children will then be asked to come to SoM for an interview and assessment. After the interview and assessment
(based on ability to commit to our program) successful candidates will be placed in classes starting in September of
2014. In the case of grade 1 and grade 2 students requesting application to the HSBC Program, we will assess their
need at an interview and assessment meeting to be held at Florence Nightingale one Thursday after school in late
April 2014.
