Inspiration:
In 2007 I was
diagnosed with
breast
cancer. I never
seemed to pay
much attention
to cancer before,
as it had never
touched my world,
but the disease
has transformed
my
life in many ways.
This piece is a
tale of my journey,
the healing from
many of the animals
in my life, and
a reminder of
the power of prayer
and faith. I learned
to treat my
body as a garden,
and to treat the
people I love like
gems because
life
is short. I have
transformed myself
as the butterfly
with new beauty
and
strength. May
all my sisters spread
their wings and
fly.

It only takes a few minutes to

Decide how long you want your
two necklace strands to be. (In my
necklaces, the silver strands are 14 in./
36cm and 20 in./51cm; the gold are
17 in./43cm and 20 in./51cm.) Cut a
piece of chain to each length.
On each piece of chain, attach
a cosmic unit to the center link. Attach
a 3 ⁄4 -in. (1.9cm) piece of chain, a round
unit, and a bicone unit to the cosmic
unit’s loop. Complete the wraps.

St. Petersburg chain
You have a lot of other options for this simple stitch. You can make a
chain that blends with natural stone by mixing colors, like this green,
beige and red chain that takes its color from two large Rain Forest
Jasper beads. By choosing the right sequence and size of bead, you
can make the chain appear to be spiraling. Add intermittent diamonds
or hexagons, as in the Geometric Earrings, page 64.
Materials
• 6 boxes (14 gr.) or sample packets of
1.5mm cube beads in mixed colors
• 2 pkgs. rainbow black matte fringe
drops
• About 200 110 matching rainbow seed
beads
• 2 12mm faceted beads in a matching
rainbow color
• Moss Green 10 lb. test Power Pro or

Leaving a 24-in. tail, pick up 2 cubes and 1
drop, go back through the 2 cubes. Pick up
2 cubes and attach to the first 2 cubes with
a ladder stitch [a]. Pick up a drop and go
through the 2 cubes you just picked up [b].
Pattern Pick up 3 cubes and pull through;
go through the bead you just came out of in
the previous box of 4 plus the first bead you
picked up, in the same direction [c]. This pulls
2 beads back in the opposite direction; I call
these the “return” beads. Pick up 1 drop and
go back through the 2 cubes you just came
out of [d]. Pick up 1 drop and go forward
through the 2 return beads [e]. Repeat until
you reach the desired length. A good length
for a lariat is 36–42 in.
AUTHOR
This is the simplest St. Petersburg chain piece in this book and a good
place to start if you’re not familiar with the stitch. You will get the feel
for pulling through and bringing the return beads back against the
work. Over the length of this piece, you can also learn how to hold the
work in your hand and develop a smooth, fast technique.
Necklace
Rainbow lariat
A fun, colorful way to use up ends or samples, this lariat can be made
with 1.5mm or 2mm cubes in any combination of rainbow colors that
suits your taste or your wardrobe. Drape it freely around your neck, tie
it in a loose knot, or double it back and put the ends through the loop
like a scarf.
To change colors, pick up 1 of the old color
and 2 of the new color and continue as usual
[f]. Change colors of the cubes about every
21⁄2 to 31⁄2 inches.
At each end, pick up the 12mm bead and
make a loop of 24 cube beads alternating
with 25 110 beads [g]. Go up through the
12mm into the chain and back out to hold the
loop in place [h]. Repeat twice for 2 more
loops. Tie off.
Smooth
working
Hold the work
in your hand
like crochet.
Pick up 3 cubes
and run them
back to your hand. Push the 3 new beads
up against the previous block of 4, drape
them over your forefinger and wrap the
working thread around your middle finger.
You are in a great position to pick up the
last bead from the previous box and the
first bead you just picked up.
