About the Kelly Kan™
Used correctly, the Kelly Kan™ helps keep crews dry and workfloors safe during connections and tripping operations. The Kelly
Kan™ is a modern solution that replaces the old mud bucket. It
weighs 27 lbs (12.25kg) and requires one person to operate.

Unpacking
Your Kelly Kan™ has been shipped to you in one box. Carefully
unpack and confirm that you have received 1 Kelly Kan™,
6 bolts (placed on the top rim of the Kelly Kan™) and a
warranty card. If you have purchased additional components,
such as Top Plates or Kelly Kan™ Seals, be sure that they are
accounted for as well (note Figure 1a and Figure 1b).
Figure 1a
In the event all the parts are not received within the
order, please contact our 24-hour customer service line
at 780.414.6083 or toll free in North America by dialing
1.800.840.2877.
Kelly Kan™ Seals - The Kelly Kan™ Seals are sized to fit the
tool joint of drill pipe. However, under special circumstances
you may also apply the seals directly onto the drill pipe
(4”/101.60mm or smaller).
To change seals, simply slide them in or out as illustrated in
Figure 1c; no tools are required. A variety of quick-exchange
seals (size 2” to 8”/ 50.8 to 203.2mm) allow the Kelly Kan™
to fit any string in its entirety: kelly, drill pipe, drill collar, test
tools, core barrels, service tubing, or casing. The seals remain
supple in extreme cold temperatures and are resistant to oil
as well as other chemicals (see the table on the left for sizes
and part numbers).

Kelly Kan™ Top Plate - The top plate is designed to fit above the tool joint of drill pipe or in
the saver sub groove - to ensure ideal Kelly Kan™ placement. Use the table on the first page to
determine the correct size Top Plate for your drill pipe. The correct Top Plates must be used on
all applications excluding heavy-weight and drill collars. These plates are easily interchanged by
rotating the six bolts as illustrated in Figure 2a. After rotating bolts, slide and remove Top Plates
as shown in Figure 2b.
Figure 2a
Figure 2b
Using the Kelly Kan™
• Set the stump low to minimize bent pipe and splashing as illustrated in Figure 3a.
• Lock the Kelly Kan™ securely on the tool joint.
• Hoist the pipe slowly.
The Kelly Kan™ will control/redirect all fluids down through the rotary table bushings/slips
and into the Upper Katch Kan™. The Kelly Kan™ reaches optimal effectiveness when used in
conjunction with the Splash Guard™ (see last page).

Note: When handling the Kelly Kan™ use handles to lift as shown above.
Optimum placement of the Kelly
Kan™ is 2” above slips

Applications
Using the Kelly Kan™ for Connections
& Blowing the Kelly
Heavy-weight and Drill Collars
• Fasten to the kelly as you would for a
connection; Top Plates hold the Kelly Kan™ in
place on the saver sub.
• Release air (or steam) slowly.
• Monitor drainage from the Kelly Kan™ and
repeat air (or steam) release as required.
• When the kelly is clear of fluids, remove Kelly
Kan™ and rack kelly as usual.
*applicable during winter conditions and rig out
• Loosen Top Plates by backing off bolts
one turn.
• Slide Top Plates off Kelly Kan™ and remove.
• Attach Kelly Kan™ 2” (50.80mm) above pin
end.
• Hoist pipe slowly.
• Allow fluid to drain.
• Replace Top Plates as soon as possible to
avoid misplacing them.
Eliminate Trip Gas
• Install Kelly Kan™ as if making a connection.
• Leave Kelly out of box end.
• Kick in pump and run at slow rate.
• Fill drill pipe with mud.
• Air can escape.
• Kelly Kan™ will control and redirect discharge.
*can be used with top drive
Regular Pipe
• Fit the Kelly Kan™ to the top of the tool joint
applying seals directly around (the tool joint).
• Close and lock.
• Hoist pipe slowly.
• Allow fluid to drain.
• Remove the Kelly Kan™ and rack pipe.
Benefits
1 - Saves drilling fluid.
2 - Floor-hands are dry and safe.
3 - Reduced drilling fluid on the work-floor and
substructure.
4 - Elimination of blow-back from rat hole when
blowing the kelly.
5 - Prevention in costly delays, such as frozen
stand pipe. The driller can be confident that mud
lines are clear after blowing the lines and kelly.

Maintenance
Guidelines
• Check the Kelly Kan™ to make sure the rig crew is using it properly.
• Check the seals to make sure there are no rips or tears (if the seals are damaged, replace
them before next Kelly Kan™ application).
• Clean the Kelly Kan™ constantly to make sure it works properly at all times.
Grooves
Tongue
In order to achieve full performance from the Kelly Kan™, regular cleaning may be necessary.
For instance, deposits may build-up in the tongue and groove joints of the Kelly Kan™; affecting
ability to close and seal properly.

Kelly Kan™/Splash Guard™ Combination
Working in conjunction with the Kelly Kan™, the Splash Guard™ is highly effective at eliminating
splashing and flooding of the rotary table. Fluid control on the work-floor is achieved by the guard
redirecting fluid to the Upper Katch Kan™. The Splash Guard™ also keeps hoses and other foreign
objects out of the slip handles/bushings while they are rotating.
This product flexes down so no extra effort is required when pulling or inserting slips.
