THE LEGEND OF KO‘OLAU

• Program: Premiere of Gary T. Kubotaʻs historical drama about the life of Kaluaiko‘olau, a
paniolo and ‘outlaw’. In this one-man play — as seen through the eyes of Koʻolau — a
courageous story unfolds about a Hawaiian family on Kauai fighting for their rights amidst
the chaos and loss of Hawaiian sovereignty in 1893. Koʻolau fought a rebel militia that
had overthrown the Hawaiian monarchy and wanted to enforce leprosy laws that would
force him and his son to the leper settlement at Kalaupapa known as “the Living Grave.”
But Koʻolau’s expertise as a marksman, the resolve of his wife Pi‘ilani to keep the family
together, and the vast wilderness of Kalalau Valley on Kauai all contribute to his cause. It
is a tale of love and survival against all odds.

A Campbell ‘Ohana wedding: (This item was published in the 2013-#3 issue of this
newsletter, but without a picture).
Years ago, we got a call from
Oswald Stender who was then a
Trustee for the Campbell Estate.
He asked Kapalakiko Productions
to travel to San Jose to retrieve
kahilis that once belonged to the
late Kamokila Campbell. We did
that and shipped them to Honolulu
via my friend, Bobby Hirano‘s
Crate Factory. The Campbell
Estate picked up all expenses and
Oswald, down through the years
has never forgotten what we did
for him. Three years ago, Tomiko
Conner. who works for Kimo
Campbell, Kamokilaʻs adopted grandson hired the KHB to perform at Kimoʻs wedding
to Kerry Tepperman at his San Rafael home in Marin County. I had only known about
Kimo through my ironworker buddy, Doug Jacobsen,who along with the late Charley
Wedemeyer, attended Punahou with Kimo. Kimo was a strong supporter of our
newsletter and band, so it was fitting that the KHB perform at his wedding. Shortly
after his wedding Kimo passed away. In researching his life, I found out that Kimo was
a political and environmental activist and worked as a journalist for Marin Countyʻs
Independent Journal. His activism was in full display at the College of Marin, at the
University of California at Berkeley, and in Marin Countyʻs world of political, social and
environmental concerns. A few months ago, I received an email from Suzanne Avina
of Santa Clara asking if the KHB was available to perform at her sonsʻ wedding. My
usual reaction to such requests is to ask, “how did you get to contact us for this
event?” Suzanne answered, “ Kimo Campbell is my dear cousin and I was in
attendance at his wedding where I heard your band perform. In a dream, it was
revealed to me that the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band was the band to perform at my
sonsʻ wedding reception.” “Weʻll be there for you and your ‘ohana,” I reassured her.
In researching the Campbell family, it was revealed that Kamokila Campbell had spent
her last years residing in Palo Alto. I told Suzanne of Oswald Stenderʻs telephone call
and the errand he sent me on. Suzanne sighed, “oh how I remember those kahilis
outside the front door of grandmaʻs home in Palo Alto.” I knew then, how the kahilis

landed in San Jose. I was well aware, too, that composer Muriel Flanders was a
daughter of Kamokila Campbell and that Mountain Apple Records had produced a CD
with various artists in the MAC stable performing Murielʻs compositions; among them,
The Brothers Cazimero; Tony Conjugacion; Teresa Bright; OʻBrian Eselu; Moe Keale;
Keao Costa; Nā Leo; Jeff Rasmussen; Ken Makuakāne; Kawika Maguire. Through Leah
Bernstein of Mountain Apple Company, I was gifted a copy of this CD, “The Music of
Muriel Flanders,” Mountain Apple Company MACD 2079, 2001. Leah also briefed me
that Jon de Mello, the present head of MAC was adopted as a young lad into the
Campbell family because his dad Jack had produced Kamokilaʻs recordings and was
therefore, a close friend and confident to the matriarch. Leah also shared stories of
Kamokilaʻs offsprings who are known for their charity philanthropy to various local
organizations. Rob and his sister Jennifer Rose Lokelani Avina are Kamokila
Campbellʻs great grand children. Their mother, Suzanne Macfarlane Avina, continues
the Campbell family tradition of philanthropy. Suzanne married Robert Avina, a
motorcycle policeman who served the cities of Campbell (how ironic) and Santa Clara
and was paralyzed racing his motorcycle responding to an accident. He then trained
himself to become a paralegal. He had a special friend, Alma a golden retriever,
trained to help rehabilitate people. Robert Avina passed away, 13 July 2004. The
reception of Rob Avinaʻs marriage to Candance Bates took place at the Santa Clara
Senior Center on Saturday, 1 June. Suzanne was moved when we performed her
Auntie Muriel Flanderʻs composition, “Lanikūhonua.” Lanikūhonua is the name of the
Campbell family home at Ko ‘Olina, Oʻahu. This tale of ‘ohana lies at the heart of why
we perform the good stuff.
MAI POINA
In past months we have lost good friends of this newsletter, the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band,
the San Francisco Bay area community at large, and members of our extended ʻohana. We
mention their names here and thank their memory for touching our lives; since our
newsletter has gone on line weʻve lost touch with some of our old friends only to discover
sadly, that some of them have passed away; included are Auntie Libby Naone Bailey of
Maple Shade, New Jersey and Auntie Ihilani Silva Miller, composer of Pakalana; soon after
losing his dad, KHB apprentice Jay Pagaduan has lost his auntie, Nila de Gracia who passed
away at age 73, in the Phillippines; gone from the Kawahara ‘ohana is one of my favorite
aunties, Mae Setsuko Inaba Kawahara of Hilo, wife of Karl Komao “Java Man” Kawahara;
since then weʻve also lost Aaron Ahn and Mine Kawahara Mana; in recent months too, the
Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band has lost three of its Associates and mentors from O‘ahu: Auntie
Nickie Hines of Waimānalo, Kawika Gapero of Kāne‘ohe, and the Reverend Dennis David
Kamakahi of Āliamanu; word has come from Beverly and Edgar Palenapa of the McKinley High
School, Class of 1955 Alumni that my old Pauoa Valley friend Herbert Fat Chai Chang has
passed away in Lathrop, California; as we go to press with this newsletter, Betty Chang, wife

• Gary & Sheldeen Haleamau: The Folklife Program of the Nevada Arts Council has
named Las Vegas residents Gary and Sheldeen Haleamau as recipients of the 2015
Nevada Heritage Award. The Haleamaus are recognized for preserving,
perpetuating and presenting their native Hawaiian culture throughout Nevada.Gary
was born and raised on the Hu‘e Hu‘e Ranch in North Kona, and local cowboy
music was part of his family culture for generations. He is noted for his falsetto
singing and slack key guitar. He has performed around the world and won many
awards for his recordings. Sheldeen, born on Kaua’i into a family of hula dancers,
studied with a number of hula masters. Both a dancer and a teacher, Sheldeen
teaches Hawaiian language and culture along with dance so that students
understand the full meaning of hula. She introduces each song or chant with a
description of its meaning. She is also a fine traditional and contemporary Hawaiian
singer. The couple was nominated by Nevada folklorist Rachel Hopkin, of Nevada
Humanities, who said they express the gifts of both traditional and contemporary
Hawaiian art, with excellence. “The Aloha spiritual path guides their lives and
involves the practice of presence, humility, perseverance, unity, and honesty,”
Hopkin said. “They are artists of great distinction who believe it is their
responsibility to pass on the art, music, and culture that will keep Hawaii alive, even
on the mainland.” The Haleamaus are well-respected performers and teachers of
traditional Hawaiian culture and are extremely active in the Las Vegas area
Hawaiian-Asian-Pacific Islander community. Their family band includes their sons
and they regularly perform for the Lei Day Festival and at local retirement homes,
museums, schools and churches. The Nevada Heritage Awards honor and
recognize Nevada master folk and traditional artists who, at the highest level of
excellence and authenticity, carry forward the folk traditions of their families and
communities through practice and teaching. The award carries a $3,500 stipend.
The Nevada Arts Council presents the awards to individuals whose achievements
have had a positive impact on the excellence, vitality and public appreciation of folk
and traditional arts in Nevada. The Nevada Arts Council, a division of the Nevada
Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, is the agency charged with ensuring that
state and national funds support cultural activity and encourage participation in the
arts throughout Nevada. In addition to providing hundreds of grants to arts and
community-based organizations, schools, artists and local municipalities throughout
the state, the Arts Council coordinates a variety of statewide programs and activities
such as the annual Poetry Out Loud recitation competition for high-school aged
students, traveling exhibits, artist residencies, workshops and cultural assessments.
