PROGRESS OF CONSTRUCTION REGARDING THE NEW
ESTABLISHMENT OF DETENTION
The new detention establishment in Trikala will be handed over for use forthwith
(mid-June 2006); the Domokos detention facility will be delivered in September 2006,
while the detention establishment in Grevena by the end of the year (2006).
Following suit for the 1st semester of 2007 will be the detention facilities of
Nikiforos Dramas and Nigrita Serres, whilst the detention establishment in Chania will be
delivered ending the year 2007.
Let us also point out that after meaningful alterations being effected on the six (6)
new places of detention under construction, we have increased their occupancy levels by
45%, from 280 to 400 prisoners, and we have considerably improved in terms of
infrastructure the quality of life, education and vocational training of prisoners by
increasing and utilizing to the maximum the spaces where the aforementioned activities
take place.
TIMEFRAME OF IMMEDIATE INTERVENTION AIMED AT THE
AMELIORATION OF DETENTION ESTABLISHMENTS
Malandrino Detention Establishment
20 new wards with a capacity to hold up to 200 prisoners are in the stage of
completion. The transfer of 80-100 prisoners may commence on 15 June 2006. The work
will have been completed by the end of July 2006.

Judicial Prison of Larissa
New wards of overall capacity up to 150 prisoners will be set up. The work will
have been completed by the end of July 2006.
Judicial Prison of Patras
New cell blocks with an official capacity of holding up to 80-100 prisoners, a
corresponding drainage network, as well as the installation of a lift for serving the floors
will be set up. The work will have been completed by the end of July 2006.
Corfu Closed Prison
The project styled “GENERAL REFURBISHMENT OF THE CORFU CLOSED
PRISON” was put to a bidding process on 3 May 2006 with a budgeted outlay running at
1.105.104,95 euros plus VAT.
Timetable for the completion of works: 540 calendar days following the signing of
the contract.
Tripoli Judicial Prison
On 16 May 2006, the project entitled “REPAIRS AND NECESSARY WORKS TO BE
EFFECTED IN THE JUDICIAL PRISON OF TRIPOLI, PHASE C’: CONSTRUCTION
OF A GUARD POST, CONSULTING ROOM AND FENCE PERIMETER –
UPGRADING OF ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS”, in which there are included
works concerning the improvements and reconstructions, among them also the
construction of a new out-of-prison sentry post (in replacement of the old one), and
repair works concerning the rest of the guard posts, will be put to competitive bidding.
Projects in respect of other prisons which shall be tendered soon.
The drawing up of studies are also in a phase of completion and projects to be carried out
with respect to the following Detention Establishments will be tendered forthwith

INTERVENTIONS UNDERTAKEN IN ELEONAS – THEBES
SETTING UP OF A DETOXIFICATION CENTER FOR DRUG-ADDICTED
WOMEN PRISONERS (K.A.T.K.) AND OF A NEW CLOSED PRISON FOR
WOMEN of overall budgeted outlay totting up to 7 million euros (according to an
evaluation)
Three projects are in the process of being executed: the procedure for their execution
follows specific priorities in order for the intervention concerning the detoxification
center to be completed; to this end, the main building installations, which will
subsequently be converted into a closed prison for women of an official holding capacity
of up to 300 prisoners, will have to be evacuated first.

PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN IN RESPECT OF PRISONS.
KORYDALLOS PRISON HOSPITAL:
PERSONS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS.
SECURING
ACCESSIBILITY
TO
Works are being carried out with a view to securing accessibility to Korydallos Prison
Hospital of budgeted expenditure running to the tune of 186.983 Euros.
INSTITUTION FOR MALE JUVENILE OFFENDERS, AVLONA. REPAIRS.
In furtherance to petition filed by the so housed service in regard to repairs to be effected
in the Institution for Male Juvenile Offenders in Avlona, our service has been
programming repairs concerning:
1. The insulation of building terraces.
2. The radical refurbishment of kitchens.
3. The need for the partial layout of waiting areas.
4. The need for the construction of a rainwater drainage well and a sentry
watchtower.
5. Expansion of the prisons repair workshop.
6. Repair of cells’ doors and replacement or repair of locks that are not functioning.
7. Replacement of the hydraulics presenting leaks.
KORYDALLOS JUDICIAL
REFURBISHMENT
PRISON.
INSULATION
–
REPAIR
AND
In furtherance of petition filed by the afore-mentioned accommodated service for repairs
to be effected to the Korydallos Judicial Prison, our service has been planning, via the
Prefecture of Piraeus, repair works concerning:
1. The insulation of the terraces of all prison wings.
2. Repair of solar systems designed for the heating of water.
3. Renovation of the kitchens’ floor.
The project is at the stage of study by the Piraeus Prefecture.
KASAVETIA AGRICULTURAL CORRECTIONAL ESTABLISHMENT FOR
MINORS – REPAIRS
The project includes maintenance and repair works for the building of the warehouses
designed for the storage of cereals, as well as the buildings of the carpentry and machine
workshops. The budgeted outlay of the project tots up to 237.000 euros.

ALICARNASSOS PRISON, IRAKLION – VISITING AREA AND RECREATION
HALL
The prison authorities have filed a petition for the construction of a visiting area and
recreation hall. The procedures for the materialization of the project have ground to a halt
owing to reservations raised about the possibility of issuing a building license for reasons
having to do with ownership titles (a court decision is pending). The budgeted outlay for
the project stands at 550.000 euros.
ALICARNASSOS PRISON- CONSTRUCTION AND RAISING OF THE NEW
GUARD’S POST HIGHER ON THE SURROUNDING WALL
After a petition lodged by the prison authorities concerning the construction of a sentry’s
post on the surrounding wall (prison’s fencing perimeter), a study was drawn up for the
project budgeted at 33.320,00 euros (TY 12494 – 13 Feb 2006 document filed by the
Technical Services Directorate of the Prefectural Self-Government of Iraklion) and will
be tabled for credit approval before the competent fund for the financing of Judicial
Buildings.
KORYDALLOS PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL – SPECIAL DETENTION UNIT
Tenders have been put out on a project regarding the layout of a special detention unit
within the Psychiatric Hospital of Korydallos. It is estimated that the contractor will
commence works within June. The project runs at a budget to the tune of 301.467 euros.

AND
PSYCHIATRIC
HOSPITAL
A fund allotment was approved for the construction of a wastewater pipe of budgeted
outlay running at 50.000 euros; the whole project has been put to tenders.
IOANNINA PRISON – REPAIRS AND MAINTENANCE
The project involves works of repair and maintenance of the installations on a budgeted
outlay running at 259.721 euros. The project has recently been completed.

IOANNINA PRISON – REPAIRS
The project involves works concerning changes on the layout of the prison on a budgeted
outlay running at 53.000 euros. The whole project is proceeding smoothly.
TIRINTHA PRISON – PERSONS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AND CHANGE IN
THE USE OF SPACES
An indicative budget is expected to be drawn up by the Technical Services Division of
the Prefectural Administration of Argolis for ensuring accessibility to persons with
special needs and the spatial layout of the old guard- house into a place of detention for
prisoners returning from leave and of the old coffee-house into a canteen space.
CHIOS PRISON – BUILDING OF PRISON’S OUTER GUARD POST
The construction of a building designed to house the prison’s outer guard is being
planned.
Remarks:
The foregoing projects aside, there are carried out various works of repair and
maintenance by the so accommodated services, by means of supervision in site
performed by them, such as painting etc.
