Business banking gets personal
Banks today offer a growing menu
of products and services geared
specifically for business clients.

Think of it as business banking with a personal touch.
New Jersey banks have a menu of services they offer businesses. Yet unless that menu
is supported by a dedication to customer service and a genuine effort to establish and grow
relationships, those services are just another list, according to local bankers.
“Products are just that,” said Birgit Schumann, a business banking associate in M&T
Bank’s business and professional banking division. They need to be backed by superior
service.
Today services banks offer business can be as basic as checking, deposit or reserve
accounts or as sophisticated as money management, payroll services, including electronic
transfers and contractor payments, bill paying, credit services, investments and real estate
financing.
And one type of service can lead to more.
“Sometimes the initial interest of the prospective customer is not a checking account but
a real estate loan,” said Laurie Liebers, senior managing director of treasury management
at Peapack-Gladstone Bank.
Banks also offer businesses insurance, benefit plans and management, retirement
accounts and wealth management options through business banking specialists. Some
banks offer planning and application advisors to help businesses apply for loans and grants
from organizations such as the federal Small Business Administration and the New Jersey
Economic Development Authority. Services can also include plans for and expertise in
international business transactions.
A service area that has grown in recent years is electronic banking that provides
convenience and safety for businesses. Fraud protection, such as Peapack-Gladstone’s
Positive Pay automated fraud detection tool, offers businesses added protection.
Electronic services also include remote deposit and merchant services that set up debit
and credit accounts and other customer payment plans to allow a business to offer more
than one option for a business’ customers to pay for goods or services. For example,
Peapack-Gladstone offers a customer pay portal through which a business can accept
payments from their customers electronically.
Peapack-Gladstone has branches in Hunterdon, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset and
Union counties. Initially a trust bank, Peapack-Gladstone is a newer player in the field of
extensive business banking services, according to Liebers.
“We are a small bank but we offer a comprehensive suite of services,” she said.

Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door. In a way, that is the
business philosophy of Metem Corporation, the Parsippany-based supplier of advanced
turbine engine components for the power generation and aerospace industries.
Metem uses innovative and advanced technologies to drill precision cooling holes in
its components, which reduces turbine lifecycle costs, allows them to run hotter and more
efficiently and makes them more environmentally friendly.
Metem is successful due to not only its innovation and technology but also its culture,
according to Steven Goldthwaite, the company’s CEO.
“We built a culture of employees at all skill levels who have an amazing ability to work
together,” he said. “It’s in our DNA to want to solve complex problems.”
So Metem continually looks to build the next better mousetrap.
“It forces us to continually innovate,” he said. “We always want to be one step ahead.”
That drive led to Metem in 2012 acquiring 50 percent of ECM Technologies, a
Netherlands-based electro-chemical machining manufacturer. This advanced technology is
enabling Metem to pursue emerging market opportunities, including consumer electronics,
health care and 3D printing, according to Goldthwaite.
At its core Metem remains a manufacturing company. The business was founded by
Goldthwaite’s father, duVal Goldthwaite, in 1962. Metem employs about 250 people,
including 170 in two Parsippany facilities, and operates plants in Allendale, PA, and
Budapest, Hungary. The company is expanding its footprint in Parsippany by 42,000 feet

Time to check your goals for 2014

March is a good time to reassess how you
are doing with your goals for 2014. If you
didn’t set goals at the beginning of the year,
set them NOW.
It’s important to have goals – and
important to reevaluate them on a
regular basis so you know where you’re
going, where you’re at and what course
corrections you need to make.
Right now let’s just focus on you. Not
your career goals, not your job performance
goals and especially not the goals in which
your wife or your husband have included
you. All too often we get caught up on
what other people want and expect from us
– our bosses, our customers, our spouses,
our families, our friends. At the moment,
you’re reading this publication because
you’re thinking about the business world.
Take a second, take a deep breath and take
a step back.
I’ll wait while you go and find the list of
goals you set for yourself. Review them,
read them out loud and then take a second
to reflect on each one to see if you’re doing
anything to achieve it – and whether having
that goal is helping you.
I bet most of you are not feeling very
satisfied right now. I know that when I
reviewed my own goals for 2014 I felt a
little empty myself. I hadn’t gotten very far.
So what are we going to do about this?
Here is the game plan: Take out your
calendar and pick a day within the next
30-45 days that you will take off from
work and do something that YOU WANT
TO DO! It can include your spouse, kids
or friends or just you. I know it sounds
crazy – one of those easier-said-than-done
deals – but it’s not. It’s easy – and totally
necessary.
Ask yourself something: “If I take a day
off for myself, am I going to get fired from
my job? Is my spouse going to leave me?
Is the world going to come to an end?” I’m
99-and-44/100 percent sure the answer is
no. So just do it.
Why is taking one day for yourself so
important? Because having something
special to look forward to is
stimulating. It will motivate you
to get things done before you take
that “Self Day.” And on that day,
doing whatever activity you’ve been
planning, you will be happy, excited,
relaxed and de-stressed. And when
you go back to work, you will be
reinvigorated and damn glad you
took that day for yourself.
Look at some of our greatest business
leaders. They not only commit to taking
time for themselves, they encourage their
employees to do the same. It makes for a
better overall work environment.

The percentage of electricity generated
from natural gas in the United States
increased from 21.4 percent in 2008 to
30.4 percent in 2012, according to Metem.
Improvements in natural gas production
and the discovery of new reserves brought
plummeting gas prices, which resulted
in the increase in natural gas-generated
electricity, according to Goldthwaite.
He said the keys are development of
skills, motivation – “We create a culture
of innovation and excitement,” he said –
paying for college and continuing education
and a strong recruitment effort.

Also new to the field of business banking
is XCEL Federal Credit Union.
“Even though we are just about 50 years
old we were never allowed to serve the
business community but now we are,” said
Tom Quigley, director of marketing. “We
treat businesses the same way we treat
our members – by providing the highest
quality products and services, delivered
with honesty and integrity in a safe and
convenient manner.”
EXCEL currently offers the basic
business services such as checking and
savings accounts and credit cards and
loans. Business members also are able to
purchase some insurance plans through the
credit union.
“Our business account business is
growing each week,” Quigley said. “We
may not offer all the specialized business
services that are available but we are
moving in that direction.”
He said the change was made because
business members whose employees did
their banking with the credit union asked
for business accounts.
“Some companies are so small (one or
two employees) that they felt they weren’t
getting the respect they deserved from
the big banks,” Quigley said. “So really
we’re a niche player. We’re not set up to
handle big businesses like banks but we
are excellent when working with smaller
shops.”
M&T Bank is a new member of the New
Jersey banking community but has a long
history in New York and Maryland. M&T
purchased Hudson City Bancorp in 2012,
acquiring 135 branches. The merge is
pending.
M&T’s business banking focus in on
establishing and nurturing relationship with
clients, Schumann said. That is based on
listening, she added. The goal is to create
trust and a successful partnership.
For example, M&T will pre-qualify a
business client to determine if there are
weaknesses in their business plan and to
ensure they have the financial assets to
manage a transaction.

Politics matters to business
Many people are not interested in politics. Some don’t understand the
political process and don’t want to learn. Increasingly there is a huge
frustration with how decisions are made, the burden of taxation and the
partisanship which often appears to derail common sense solutions to some
of our challenges.

Inside Edge...
The Morris County Chamber of Commerce has introduced a new logo, a contemporary look
that comprises three interlocking Cs – the first two turned sideways to form an M joined by
the third. The three Cs reference the chamber’s three major initiatives/programs – the Morris
County Economic Development Corporation, the Morris Business Cabinet and Leadership
Morris. In light of the new chamber logo, Business Edge also has a new look beginning this
month.
Remember Mark Twain’s comment, “No man’s life, liberty or property are safe while the
legislature is in session.” Most states have part-time legislatures and business owners have
historically preferred it that way.
The new brand initiative will better position the chamber as one comprehensive organization.
The new logo was designed by strategic branding and marketing agency Trajectory.
Legislating is like sausage-making in so many ways. Lots of different ingredients in the
form of ideas and objectives from many people get added to the mix and, voila – we get
public policy. In our democratic system we have many cooks in the kitchen when it comes
to the regulations and laws that impact our businesses and personal lives.
The Morris County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has constructed a new
Emergency Operations Center and recently hosted a breakfast tour of the facility. Security
and emergency management personnel from companies throughout the county were invited to
tour the multi-million dollar facility and learn how they can better integrate their emergency
plans with county and state resources. They also learned about the OEM’s partnership with the
Morris County Chamber of Commerce.
Elected officials and a vast bureaucracy of civil servants make the rules that we live by.
Unfortunately, government is often an unwanted partner at your table and in the discussion
of how your enterprise will operate and the costs you will bear from government. Ineffective
government continues to add costs that business people must pay every day in the form of
permit delays, paperwork requirements and unclear regulations.
Can we get past politics and get something done in New Jersey this year? As we move
into 2014 the press is disgorging barrels of ink on Bridgegate and how Sandy funds were
distributed. I am not dismissing the need for a clear understanding and resolution of these
matters but the daily ration of commentary is getting very repetitive.
I don’t know how long all this will continue but I do know it has poisoned any chance
for us to have a bipartisan discussion on health care, taxation, pension costs and many other
issues.
The governor has done a great job in making New Jersey more competitive and businessfriendly with support from the Senate and Assembly. I’m hopeful more progress can be made
in his second term but seven weeks into 2014 bipartisanship is not tops on the agenda in
Trenton. Will 2014 be a wash out in terms of tackling some of our key challenges?
The 2014 congressional elections provide the backdrop for positioning on key issues that
impact the business community. On the national front the president’s approval rating continues
to slide as he grapples with Obamacare, war in the Middle East and challenges to his use
of executive authority to change laws passed by Congress. Both parties seem to agree that
immigration reform is needed but the GOP is moving slowly, concerned about the president’s
unilateral actions to mold policies and programs as he sees them and without concurrence
from Congress.
My view is that we have made a decision to not deport 11 million undocumented immigrants
living in our country and now we have to get on with a process of bringing these folks fully
into our economy. Let’s have secure borders and a process and timeline that make sense
financially for those who want to “get right with uncle Sam.”
The senate bill last year tried to address many of these issues and the House has decided
to do this legislation in piecemeal fashion. The Keystone Pipeline project is caught up in
a political war between those who focus on energy independence and others who want the
country to move to non-carbon alternative energy options. The political parties are also teeing
up their views on Obamacare in their efforts to control the Congress in January of 2015.
The chamber will weigh in this year on policy issues that will impact your business and I
welcome your views.

The Provident Bank, New Jersey’s first and oldest
community bank, will mark 175 years in business February 27.
To celebrate the anniversary the bank will offer refreshments
to visitors at all branches that day and will host a gala event
that evening at the Liberty House in Jersey City, where the

Atlantic Health System and Adventist HealthCare recently
announced that Adventist will transfer ownership of
Hackettstown Regional Medical Center, a 111-bed acute care
hospital, to Atlantic Health System. The announcement of the transaction, which is subject to
state regulatory review that could span several months, follows the completion of a merger
between Atlantic Health System and Chilton Hospital on January 1, 2014.

Nancy Foulke has joined Hunter Group CPA LLC as audit
manager. She will be responsible for both audit and tax clients of

math skills with the help of employees

Commerce.

Berkeley College and the County College of Morris (CCM) recently signed an agreement to
ease the transfer process for CCM students who seek bachelor’s
degrees in a variety of disciplines. The agreement allows eligible
CCM graduates with an associate of science degree in business
administration or criminal justice to enter Berkeley College as
juniors with their general-education core requirements fulfilled.
These students can transfer all their CCM credits, giving them
half the credits required for the Berkeley College bachelor’s
degree programs included in the agreement.
PwC launched Earn Your Future in
2012, a program designed to address
financial literacy for students and teachers.
PwC employees throughout the country
volunteer as teachers, working with school
administrators and school teachers to
identify areas of concern using more than
two dozen modules focusing on topics
including budgets, debits and credits,
identity theft, sustainability and investing.
The college also announced that Judith Kornberg has been
appointed Berkeley College associate provost, academic
affairs. Kornberg joined Berkeley in September 2010 as dean
of the School of Professional Studies. She holds a doctorate in
political science from the University of Connecticut; a master of
administration in history from Northwestern University (IL); and
a bachelor of arts in history from SUNY in Binghamton, NY.
Because the program is expanding, PwC
reached out to other financial professionals
in the chamber to volunteer their expertise
and participate in the teaching, according
to Peter Nicholas, a PwC team leader in
its Florham Park office. Recruitment of
members is done through the chamber’s
Business Education Together program.
In addition, Berkeley recently dedicated its sixth Veterans Resource Center for its
military and veteran students. The college recently was named Best for Vets for Online and
Nontraditional Colleges by Military Times and Best for Vets, Four-year Colleges by Military
Times, and for five years in a row has been recognized as a top military-friendly school by
G.I. Jobs and Military Advanced Education.

Mitzvah Market in a story about the studio’s drone photography. The studio
flies unmanned aircraft with a camera over events and parties to take photos and

Earn Your Future focuses on two
problem areas: a lack of financial literacy
among students and the lack of training
opportunities for educators. PWC has
committed $160 million to the program
through 2017 – $60 million in cash
donations and one million services hours
worth $100 million – and hopes to impact
more than 2.5 million students and
educators.

“Here’s something PwC can do to help
by partnerships with schools,” Agugliaro
said. “It reinforces what teachers are doing
in the classrooms. We go at it a little deeper
and the teachers thoroughly enjoy it. We
make it dovetail with their curriculum.”
More than 150 PwC employees from the
Florham Park office have volunteered their

Agugliaro.
“There’s a sense of gratification,” he
said. “They felt good about delivering the
lesson and tell us they want to do it again,
many times over.”
Nicholas is one of those who finds time
in his schedule to work with the students.
“It’s an opportunity for me to volunteer
my time and teach students,” he said.
“When you actually give them something
practical they can use, it’s just so
rewarding. The first time a kid says to
you, ‘I know what a budget is,’ and then
explains it to you perfectly…it’s all very
rewarding.
“All of our volunteers go out once or
twice and get hooked,” he added. “Then it’s
a matter of making time from their day jobs
to teach these classes.”
“Students in the United States across the
board on average are far behind so many of
the industrial nations,” he added.

Ridgedale Middle School in Florham
Park and Frelinghuysen Middle School in
Morristown and expect to return to both
schools this year. Also on this year’s list are
