Why do you want to run the Mt Washington
In part because for years whenever I tell
people I race hillclimbs the first thing they
ask is if I have raced Washington. It is a
premiere event. I also think my Troyer
Modifed is a nice addition to any hillclimb. It
is just so different from the normal awd rally
car. There is a segment of people who really
like the sight of a open wheel stock car and
the sound of an american V8.

I used to work at Mt Washington Hillclimb
during the late 90's and always wanted to
compete. Once I built my racecar, I was
hoping it would be run again. My dreams
were answered in 2010 when they
announced the 2011 event. Driving up the
auto road in my Nissan was THE most fun I
have ever had yet the most challenging as
well. I didn't get to reach the potential of
my car as it had a gearbox issue on the final
run. Before that run, to my surprise, I was in
4th overall and driving conservatively. I have
more excitement about this event that any
other I have competed in. I have spent 24
months working on the car (with one event
last year) but it will be in top form by early
spring. The car is a very special one with a
large following, built entirely by myself but
it's speed has been made possible with the
help of a few very talented people (one who
maps the engine and the other who sets up
the chassis/suspension). It would be an
honor to be able to compete at the event
again. I am getting married two weeks
before so it will be the ultimate wedding
gift:)

The history surrounding the event, along
with the road itself make this event stand a
part from any other hill climb. The 2011
CTTC was an incredible experience for me,
and it would be great to have a chance to
compete in the event again. Having now
competed with NEHA for 5 years, I realize
how deeply the CTTC is connected to New
England hill climbing. Being able to add this
event into the middle of the NEHA events
makes for a very special season. Like in 2011,
I would make every effort to come to the
event with a properly prepared car and an
appearance fitting the events magnitude.

I ran this event in 2011 and it was the best
motorsport experience of my life. Despite
losing an engine during Friday's practice
session, we trailered the car 3.5 hours south
to swap the engine and 3.5 hours back to the
event. The replacement engine was much
underpowered compared to the original
engine but, it allowed us to reach the
summit and complete the event. I am very
proud of my team and their efforts, and I
would like another opportunity to run the
event and redeem myself with a better
performance.

New Zealand 1984 - 1989. Raced gravel and
tarmac hillclimbs, street sprints, rallysprints,
and club-level saloon car racing at Manfeild
Race Circuit. Won the 1988 Paekakariki
tarmac hillclimb overall (FTD) held at night (8
PM to 6 AM) in a V8 Chevette rally car.
Raced hillclimbs with NEHA from 2009 to
today. Numerous class wins, class
championship SP2 in 2010. Raced at the
Pikes Peak International Hillclimb in 2012
and 2013, qualified well in an underpowered
car (6th out of 23 in 2012), race day results
hindered both years by bad weather. Raced
Mt Washington hillclimb lower half course in
2008 with Vintage Sports Car Club of
America and BMW CCA, set FTD on Saturday
in damp but drying conditions. Also raced
Mt Washington in 2011 (see below).
Currently I race on Northeast circuits with
NASA in German Touring Series class, and
have a NASA regional racing license.

I won the H2 class in 2011, so I hold the
Mt Washington is my favourite hillclimb in
the entire world. I am giving up racing at
Pikes Peak to enter Mt Washington in 2014.
I absolutely love this road; it is technical,
demanding, and really fun. The competitors
are fantastic, the organizers are fantastic,
the mountain is unbelievable. What more
can I say?

I have been involved in the NEHA and KSCC
hillclimb events for over 6 years and have
many miles on track with both wheel-towheel racing and time trial experience all up
and down the east coast. Having done such
races as 24hrs at VIR to sprints at Watkins
Glen. And hundreds of laps around New
Hampshire's NHMS and Lime Rock. In
addition for being an active hillclimber, I
have been a member of the COMSCC since
2007.

The history of the Mt Washington auto race
has always intrigued me. Seeing pictures of
the past racers navigating themselves up the
gravel laced mountain in everything from
Ferrari's to home built racers, I knew that
one day I had to participate. Many of my
fellow hillclimbers have spoken about the
majesty, sheer size, length, and especially
technical difficulty of the Mt Washington
race. Stories told around the campfires at
the hillclimb weekends about that a certain
curve that is deceivingly fast, or the hairpins
and the top that simply seem to appear out
of the fog. After hearing these stories, and
having watched the events unfold in 2011, I
knew that I needed to be a part of the
automotive history that is the Mt
Washington Climb to the Clouds.

Running in 2014 for me will be my 7th CTTC
event. There are few chances that most of us
have to compete on such an incredible
compilation of speed, technical challenges
and sheer geographic beauty. There isn't a
more challenging 7 mile stretch of road that I
would want to race more than this one. I'm
out hiking these mountains all the time, but
every time I see the road from some distant
peak, all I can think of is an opportunity to
drive flat out up this mountain one more
time.

I could have only ever dreamed of entering
when I attended in 2011. That year was my
first year of hillclimbing and I did not have
the prerequisite experience to participate,
so I went to cheer on my fellow NEHA racers
(and of course, to see how they stacked up
against the professional teams). The group
of people involved with the New England
Hillclimb Association are the best group of
racers, crews, family, and friends I have ever
experienced in my, admittedly, short racing
career. I feel that the best way to showcase
all that the Sports Car Club of New
Hampshire (of which I am a proud member),
the Sport Car Club of Vermont, the Killington
Sports Car Club, and Rally America have to
offer the New England racing community is
to show the diversity, camaraderie, and
competitiveness provided by our
organizations and their members. There are
fellow racers with much more experience
than I that talk about events that happened
10, 20, even 30 years ago or more. As a
newer participant, I feel that it is my
responsibility to learn anything and

I have a passion for Time Trials because of its
solo nature, and adding a hill climb is the
icing on the cake. I love difficult challenges
and this appears to be up there with the
most difficult challenges I can imagine.
Secondly, the car I am running is a 1993
Toyota Supra that is being built by Frank
Sprongl to resemble a GT1 car. Resources

90+ cars. I regret that I did not start driving
hillclimbs until the last 8 years of my life. It
has become my total passion to the point I
started a hillclimb in the Southeast (dragon)
and began writing a book on hillclimbing in
the US and it's history. I have a collection of
programs, t-shirts, trophies, articles from
many hillclimbs and have interviewed many
drivers from the past. George Bowland (who
holds most of the PHA records) is a close
friend and he has mentored me and helped
me compile much of this history for the
future. I want to make sure this sport
remains alive and well for future
generations. I have attended hillclimbs in
Switzerland and Germany, studied their
systems, safety and procedures and I want
to continue to learn and borrow from them
to grow hillclimbing in the US. The dream of
running Mt. Washington was far away 10
years ago. I sold the Hillclimb Special / A
Mod car I was driving and bought a
Westfield 7... with Hayabusa motor. The

The Porsche Special was built by Bill Rutan of
Connecticut in the late 1950's. It was a purpose built car
for hillclimbs. The front hood, longitudinals and center
tube are from a 1945 VW as is the highly modified front
suspension. The engine is a Porsche 4 cam engine from a
1958 Carrera. The frame, rollcage, rear suspension and
the cooling system were designed by Rutan and weight
was kept at around 850 lbs. It has several FTD's from the
era and has also raced at Lime Rock and the Pittsburgh
Vintage GP. The Porsche Special was profiled in a fourpage spread in the June 2011 edition of Hemmings
Sports and ExoGcs.
The most famous race was the 1961 Mt. Washington
hillclimb where it had the overall FTD on a dirt and
gravel road. It also has the distinction of overall FTD on
Mt Washington from 1904 to 1990. Of course the cars in
1904 were bog slow and in the 80's the road was
partially paved which changed the driving style and the
competition changed. However, the FTD stands. The
second overall FTD on Mt Washington was Carroll
Shelby in a race-prepared Ferrari.
The car was restored 4 years ago, and was recently
raced at the Hershey, PA VSCCA hillclimb. Driver was
Wayne Carini who came in 2nd overall on 50-year old
tires.
