Super Saturday: A Successful Fun-raiser!
By Taniah Elmore and Jane’a
Bradby
th
On Saturday, May 5 , the Fairfield
Community came together for Super
Saturday, a SPECTACULAR event to
th
raise money to send 8 graders who
pass all their SOLs to Kings Dominion.
The all-day event included a Talent
Show with amazing dancing and
singing and an appreciative audience.
Other events included a car wash with
enthusiastic sprayers and cleaners, a
video game tournament, and a
delicious bake sale.
That was not all! The Do Something
Club sold tomato plants and Ms.
Morgan hosted a prom dress sale with
gently used dresses for as little as
$15.
Basketball players played a three-onthree tournament, and face painters
entertained the little children.
Community members brought their
goods to sell at a yard sale, and Café
D was brimming with beautiful jewelry,
craft items, and enthusiastic shoppers.
Deep Run High School’s State
Championship Tennis Team hosted a
tennis camp for budding FMS players.
Finally, Mr. Crowder grilled hot dogs
and hamburgers to feed hungry
shoppers, tennis players, and car
washers! Yum! How super was that!
All in all, everyone had a great day!
FMS Students (and Mr. Crowder!)
sell their special talents and
goodies during this year’s
Super Saturday, to benefit
8th graders going to Kings
Dominion.
FMS’s Second Annual International Fair = AWESOME!
On the evening of Wednesday, May 9,
the FMS campus was transformed into
a multi-cultural tour of the world! The
evening began with a fashion show, then
visitors obtained passports at FMS’s
makeshift Ellis Island. Guests followed
their maps to visit Country Exhibits
th
created by IB 6 graders in Café Q.
Then it was off to the Spanish and
French classrooms where Mr. Dunaway’s
and Ms. Wall’s students fed their visitors
with food from their countries. Ms.
Chung’s Chinese students and families
were treated to a presentation on herbal
remedies and acupuncture. Beautiful art
displays graced the cafeterias. Ms. Hall
even arranged for a fencing demo in
Café G! Throughout, Mrs. Storrs’s jazz
combo entertained. What a night!

FMS Faculty Taste Victory (Finally!) During
the Student vs. Faculty Basketball Game
By Staff Writers
With excited students, teachers, and
administrators cheering from the
bleachers, the faculty out-scored
the students during FMS’s annual
Student vs. Faculty Basketball Game.
This was a first! Importantly, the
event raised over $1,000 for the 8th
Grade Kings Dominion field trip.
Here’s to all the students, teachers,
coaches, and administrators who
made this happen! What a great way
to cap off a successful season for
both the girls’ and boys’ basketball
teams!

BOYS BASEBALL
By Troy Turner
The boys’ baseball team
had an exciting, hard-fought
season, with outstanding
fielding and hitting by the
players.
Coach Scott and Coach
Horst are proud
of the team’s efforts, and
th
want to wish the 8
graders all the best in
high school!
LADY FALCONS SOCCER
By Asia Teachey and Ms. Hall
“The practices are hard, but we
have learned a lot this season,” said
th
Emma Brown, a 6 grader on the
Lady Falcons soccer team.
The 2012 Lady Falcons took the
field in style this season, sporting
pink soccer socks and supporting
the fight against breast cancer.
On the field, team captains Achari
Simpson and Rebecca Childress led
the team with spirit and
determination. Eighth grader Ruthie
Baker was this season’s MVP with
an impressive goal-scoring victory
over Elko.
Off the field, the Lady Falcons
donned war paint and warrior
scarves for a fun-filled day of
service at the Susan G. Komen
Race for the Cure. Coach Hall and
Coach Dunaway are extremely
proud of the girls as they have
shown 100% class,
good sportsmanship, and
Falcon PRIDE both on
and off the field. Way to
go, Lady Falcons, for an
awesome season!
GIRLS’ SOFTBALL
By Asia Teachey
I caught up with Jill Payne, one
of the newest members of the 2012
softball team, coached by Ms. Catlett and
Ms. Mattox, just before the Wilder game.
Asia: What do you guys do to warm up?
Jill:
We stretch, then run around the
field twice. Then we throw the ball.
Asia: What do you need to do to stay
focused before a game?
Jill: We need to shake off our mistakes
and focus on our strategy.

FMS’s Art Students Receive Special Honors
By Nikolaus Johnson
It has been a busy spring for Mr. K
and Mr. Epps and their Art
students. In March over 60 FMS
students displayed their artwork
at Virginia Center Commons for
the Youth Art Month Show. Jayla
Rose was asked to exhibit at the
SunTrust Art Show, and Alex Tarr
was honored for his artwork during
the HCPS School Board Art Show.
Finally, Mr. K took several art
students to the Virginia Museum of
Art, one of the top 10 nationally
ranked art museums. It was an
excellent educational opportunity
for students to see real examples
of what they have learned in class!

On April 5 , ten 6 grade strings students from FMS joined
other strings performers from around the county at Godwin
High School for the annual Fiddle Fest. Everyone had an
amazing time at this excellent event!

FMS Students Go Bowling
with PAL
Earlier this month, members of the DO Something
Club, Delta Academy, and Alpha Academy were the
honored guests at the annual Henrico Police Athletic
League (PAL) Community Recognition Bowling Party.
FMS students had a great time bowling, playing video
games, and socializing with friends! Seventh grader,
Farid Cedeno, won a 42” flat screen TV during the
Xbox Kinect video game tournament. Many thanks to
Henrico PAL for supporting our students!
Sixth grade IB student, Nathan Cozart, placed
second in this year’s Forensics Meet, held
at Moody Middle School earlier this month. Nathan
performed “Let America be America Again,” by
Langston Hughes and credits his performance to
excellent coaching by Mr. Glotfelty. This is the
first time an FMS student has ever placed in
Forensics! Way to go, Nathan!

Riddles
By Webster Hill IV
1. A man was to be sentenced, and the judge told him, “You may make a statement. If it is true, I’ll sentence
you to four years in prison. If it is false, I’ll sentence you to six years in prison.” After the man made his
statement, the judge decided to let him go free. What did the man say?
He said, “You’ll sentence me to six years in prison.” If it was true, then the judge would have to make it
false by sentencing him to four years. If it was false, then he would have to give him six years, which would
make it true. Rather than contradict his own words, the judge set the man free.
2. How many letters are in the alphabet? There are eleven letters in “the alphabet.”
3. If there are three cups of sugar and you take one away, how many do you have? You have just one – the
one you took away!
Weird But True
By Farid Cedeno
1. During the lunar day the surface of the moon can reach well over 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. It’s impossible to breathe and swallow at the same time.
3. Astronauts cannot whistle on the moon.
4. Noseprints can be used to identify dogs, just like fingerprints in humans.
5. Stretched out, your digestive system is nearly 30 feet long.
6. If you eat too many carrots, your skin can turn orange.
7. A hotel in Las Vegas has a two-story-tall chocolate fountain.
8. You take about 12,000 breaths every day!
HOROSCOPE:
By Raven Witherspoon & Brandon McLeod
If your Birthday is between April 21 and May 21, you
are a Taurus. A Taurus is a patient and reliable
person. You’re usually warm-hearted and loving to
many that you meet. You’re persistent and
determined in anything you do. But, on the flip side,
you can be jealous and possessive of people and
things. You can be resentful and inflexible. You love
security.
