High Times
The second half of the Autumn Term progressed, the girls enjoyed a variety of successes and
achievements – read all about what our girls have been up to and please remember to look at and like our
Truro High School for Girls facebook page or @trurohigh on Twitter, for more photos and news as it
happens!
Sixth Form
UCAS
Some girls have been busy attending interviews around the country recently and all girls now have their
applications in. Girls are receiving university offers every day and hopefully this will give them the incentive
to work even harder to achieve the grades they need in the summer.
On 25th November, Penny Dowell from Bristol University gave an informative talk to Y12 about applying to
selective universities and writing a personal statement.
Sixth Form Assessment Week
As last year, due to the fact that we no longer have modules in January, we will run a Sixth Form
assessment week at the end of January. The girls will be having an examination in each of their subjects
so we can monitor their progress and give them any guidance and feedback they may need before the
summer exams. The exams will take place in the week beginning Monday 26 th January.
It is essential that the girls revise the modules/work already covered over the Christmas break and that they
do not leave it until the summer when they will have a lot of exams!
Debating
CONTENTIOUS subjects were top of the agenda at the Cambridge Union debating competition, attended
by seven Sixth Formers on 5 December. The competition’s first round was held at Truro College and saw
teams from Truro High, Truro College and Truro School debating topics such as ‘should prisoners’ children
be raised behind bars’ and ‘police should carry guns’. Club members Zahra Dalal and Sylvie Rowland put
forward a persuasive and convincing case, supported by their fellow club members, including Megan
Tamblyn who acted as time keeper and Miss Whitney, who chaired a debate. Next year the school will be
entering the competition, while the girls attended this year to get a taste of what the event is all about.
Senior Maths Challenge
In this year’s UKMT Senior Maths Challenge over 81000 pupils from across the UK took part. The top 10%
nationally received gold certificates, the next 20% silver and the next 30% bronze.
In November, Allison Au, Freya Martin, Amy Purohit and Casey Wong represented the school in the
Regional Senior Team Maths Challenge competition. They worked well together and put up a good
performance in a closely fought competition. There were also several certificate winners in the individual
Senior Maths Challenge competition:
Bronze certificates were awarded to Karen Chan, Elle-Rose Hoskins, Lexie Pan and Casey Wong; Silver
certificates to Allison Au and Amy Purohit. Amy also received Best in Year.
A Gold certificate, Best in Year and Best in School were awarded to Laura Ladbrooke, who is applying to
read Maths at university.

Children in Need
The Sixth Form organized a cake stall to raise money for this important charity. We raised almost £140
which was added to the ‘own clothes’ money from the whole school to give a grand total of almost £520 for
Children in Need.
Ice Skating
Several of the Sixth Form went ice skating at the Eden Project as part of the enrichment programme. The
mix of Year 12 & 13 students all had a great time and we all returned without injury!
Christmas Party
The girls enjoyed their own special
Christmas lunch of pizzas and Chinese on
the last Tuesday of term, and after the
whole school Christmas lunch on
Wednesday, Miss Freeman and Benjamin
joined us as we exchanged Secret Santa
presents.

Senior Sports report and results
What a very exciting and successful term we have had. Well done and thank you to everyone who has

Netball
Tuesday 4th November PSP Netball v Helston
Year 7 won 28-0; Year 8 won 12-2; Year 9 won 11-8; Year 10 lost 8-34.
Wednesday 5TH November PSP Netball v Redruth
Year 7 won 29-8; Year 8 won 23-5; Year 9 won 20-2; Year 10 won 23-10; Year 11 won 33-30.
Saturday 15th November U16 County Netball Tournament at Bude
This was my third early morning start this week but on meeting the girls at the bus my spirits raised with all
their enthusiasm!
We arrived in a sunny Bude with lots of hope for a good day. In our group matches we played 6 games
winning them all: Camborne 12-7; Falmouth 13-1; Penrice 7-2; Newquay Tretherras 10-3; Launceston 8-1;
Penair 7-2.
We then had to play Penryn in the semi-finals and in a very tense game lost 8-9. After playing excellent
netball all day the girls were devastated not to be going through to the Regional round in January. We then
picked ourselves up again to play Falmouth for 3rd / 4th place, and won 4-1 finishing a very good 3rd place in
the County. Well done girls I am very proud of you all and thank you for a very enjoyable day!

Tuesday 18th November Year 7 & 8 Netball Festival at Redruth
Year 7 won 4 against Falmouth, Penryn, Camborne and Richard Lander but lost to Truro School. As all
teams lost one match Truro High finished 1st overall on goal difference. Well done girls!

This was the last of the PSP Netball matches and over the term Year 7 have not lost a match well done
Year 7! Also a very good performances by all year groups.
Hockey
Thursday 6th November U14 County Hockey Tournament
U14 County Tournament – due to the very bad forecast this tournament was played with the top 6 teams
only. Our first match was against Truro School and we really took the game to them and should have won.
The game finished 0-0. Next up was Penryn and again we were not troubled by their forwards but were
unable to score ourselves so that game also finished 0-0. In order to progress we knew that we would have
to win some games. We went in hard against Richard Lander and were rewarded with a goal after Amy
Shaw broke through the defence, we also hit the post and missed by inches late in the second half. Against
Penair we looked shaky but held firm to see out another 0-0 draw. This meant that we only needed to draw
with Bude to finish in 2nd place. We scored first after Milly Frankis found space in the circle. It was late in the
2nd half that Bude managed to find an equaliser but we were delighted to learn that our performance
qualified us to the Regional tournament at Millfield on November 12th. Well done to all who played on a very

Milly Frankis scored the goal. This meant we qualified for the Regional Tournament on 12th November at
Millfield as runners up.

Monday 10th November U12 IAPS Regional Hockey Tournament at Millfield
We left early in the morning (6am) to get to Millfield for a
10am start. The girls were chatty even at that early hour.
We played 6 games and the girls played some excellent
hockey with some outstanding saves by Sage in goal. The
results were:
Lost to: Millfield 1-0; Taunton 2-1; Beaudesert 3-1. Drew
with All Hallows 0-0. Won against: Clifton 2-0; Forres
Sandle Manor 2-1. It was a good day and the girls were a
pleasure to take on the long trip. Team: Sage NewbyJelliffe, Evie Roberts, Nancy Ellemann, Lucy Day, Katie
Day, Milly Frankis, Sophie Hodgson, Katie Humphreys,
Reilly McCormick and Evelyn Robertson.
Wednesday 12th November U14 Regional Hockey Tournament at Millfield
Yet another early start this week, the girls awoke around Exeter where we stopped for refreshments. On
arrival at Millfield the girls excitedly warmed up for their first game.
In the 1st game we drew with Godolphin School 0-0, this was a close game with both sides having good
attempts at goals. We then played Cheltenham Ladies College and lost 2-0, again we had opportunities but
some very good defending by Cheltenham denied us a goal. Our last game against Blundells we lost 3-0,
again the girls put up a strong defence but they had a very good attacking team. The girls competed well at
this level considering the age range of the team. We had players from Prep 6 to Year 9.

Wednesday 26th November U15 Invitation 7 a-side Hockey Festival
The standard of the teams at this festival was very high and it was good to test ourselves against different
schools.
We lost to: Plymouth College 1-3; Shebbear 0-4; Truro School 0-2 and won against Penryn 2-1.
U14 Hockey team has also competed in the Penzance Junior League on a Sunday 7 th December
On a cold Sunday we played 6 games winning 3 games against Penzance B & C teams and Truro B. We
drew 0-0 against Truro A and lost against Bude A & B teams.
Well done to all for surviving the wintry conditions!
Monday 8th December U12 & U13 Friendly Hockey Match v Truro School.
U12 drew 0-0; U13 lost 0-4.
Cross Country
Sunday 9th November Cornwall County Cross Country Championships at Newquay
This was a very long and demanding and race. Holly Owers and Zoe Beckly ran in the junior race and
completed the course and finished middle of the runners.
Tegan Elliott and Yoyo Barnsley ran in the Inter- Age group for Cornwall Athletics Club and finished in the
top 10. Well done to you all.
Wednesday 12th November Cross Country at Brannel

Wednesday 10th December Cross Country at Penrice
In very cold, wet and windy conditions the girls ran bravely into howling gales at times. This was a relay
race with 3 girls per team Year 7 & 8 girls running against mixed teams of boys and girls did incredibly well.
Although finishing last out of 6 Schools they were not far behind the other teams. The Year 9 & 10 team
with only 2 girls of the correct age borrowed Victoria Bradshaw from Year 8 to make up their team and
when going into the last round last Emily Williams ran an excellent race to come in front of two other
schools. Year 7/8 team: Evelyn Robertson, Maddie Babb, Holly Owers and Zoe Beckly. Year 9/10 team:
Emily Williams and Giselle Aguer Martinez. Well done to all who ran. Mrs Tregay.
MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM ALL THE PE STAFF!
Moon Rocks land at Truro High!
While trips to the moon may be something most of us can
only dream of, students at Truro High have been enjoying
parts of the satellite coming to them instead.
An exhibition featuring real Moon Rocks was held at the
school in a partnership project with Roseland Observatory,
courtesy of NASA. Exhibits included moon and meteorite
samples which the students were able to handle as well as
explore under the microscope. There were also displays
with topics from how meteorites killed the dinosaurs to
where moon landings took place.
Youngsters from local primary schools including Kea, Cusgarne, Bosvigo, Tregols and Archbishop Benson
also came to see the exhibition, before taking part in a series of hands-on experiments led by the Truro
High Science Department.
Year 10 Young Enterprise 2014/15: Trade Fairs
Both our Year 10 Young Enterprise companies have had a successful first term. Members of both “o’Cal”
and “Silvah” have shown enthusiasm mixed in with some real business acumen. Good teamwork has also
been a main feature. Advisors Mrs Katie Wild (from the local Chamber of Commerce), Mrs Gill Hall and Mr
Geoff Winwood (both from Oxford Innovations) all say how impressed they have been with the progress the
companies have made.

“Masterclass” at the Pool Innovation Centre, on
18th November, in marketing their company and
products, including preparing for a trade
fair...Stalls were reserved for both companies for
Truro High School’s Christmas Fayre on Friday
5th December and then, two days later, the Y.E.
Christmas Fair on Lemon Quay, Truro. Several
girls from each company were able to attend,
along with representatives of 16 other, from most
schools and colleges in our area. There were
prizes on offer - “Silvah” won Best Trade Stand
and came 2nd in Best Customer Service.

Several shoppers made a point of saying how special they
thought “o’Cal” ’s Christmas cards were - presentation of
these quality products needed to be as good!
Thanks go to Mrs Wild, Mr Andy Purchase, several other
staff and several parents who called in to see how the
companies were getting on. Mrs Gill Tregay was key in
helping to get the girls, display materials and products,
safely down to Lemon Quay on the Sunday, and then back
again afterwards! The girls seemed to enjoy, and benefit
from, their (apparently highly profitable) two trade fairs.
There are good reasons for them to look forward to more
business next term. In the meantime, do get in touch with

O’Cal at YE Christmas Fair on Lemon Quay
Art Department news
This term the Art Department were busy with The Big Draw event in November. The whole school were
invited to draw poppies and these were all put together in a giant installation which was displayed at our
Last Post remembrance event. The display has now been moved to the main stairwell.
The Year 10s have been busy making fans for the school production as well as Art Nouveau style paper
furniture. An exciting trip to Plymouth University as part of the Combined Truro Schools Project took some
Year 10s to the top of a very tall building for drawing and into a dome shaped theatre for a unique visual
experience. Year 9 started an architecture project with a tallest tower problem solving activity,
congratulations to Sarah Pun and Denise Grande who were the best architects/engineers! Year 8 took
various approaches to art history, including a ‘picture poem’ collage. Year 7 tried painting, drawing, printing
and wire sculpture of butterflies and bugs. Year 11 successfully completed large coursework pieces in their
mock exam and should be very proud of their outcomes.
Competitions in the department this term included the poster design for The Importance of Being Earnest,
the scholars’ Christmas cards (won by Daisy Katz) and an open submission competition requested by a
local business, for which there have been some varied and interesting responses.
Year 13 have been busy with their personal projects as well as preparing portfolios for Art College. The
term finished with a visit to the Heseltine Gallery to see the work of BA students from Falmouth University.
Life Drawing classes have been very well attended this term by Years 10 to 13 and some parents and staff.
Life drawing recommences on 7th January.

Last Post: Centenary event
On 14th November, Truro High joined other schools and community groups around the country to
commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War with an evening of readings, music, poetry
and drama. Prep and Senior girls took the audience through a thought-provoking programme, devised by
Mr Ford, Head of History, and the Last Post was played for the fallen. An art installation of poppies was
unveiled which is now hung on the main stairs, with a timeline dedicated to those involved in the conflict,
who may have been the relatives of anyone with a connection with Truro High. For more details on how to

Careers Clinic: @TruroHighFuture
Every Friday from 1-1.30pm we run a ‘Careers Clinic’ based in the careers sections of the library where
students can come in and get some advice on their future careers.
One Friday every month we are doing a ‘Careers Taster’ where we’ve had ‘Old Girls’, parents and local
businesses in to give the girls an insight into what doing their job is really like and the pathway that they
took to get there. The girls really appreciate this opportunity and those that have attended have been
inspired by the information they gained.

lawyers; Laura Snapes for her insight into arts journalism and advice on how to make your hobby your job;
Dr Sam Holland for discussing what it is really like training for and becoming a vet; Dr Kate Turton and Liz
Cooper for sharing information and advice on their career paths ‘from afar’ which have helped to add a

Rotary Young Chef Competition
On 18th November three Year 10 students competed in the Rotary Young Chef competition: the aim of this
competition is to develop the young people’s food skills and awareness of healthy eating. It was created to
give young people the chance to show off their creative culinary talents, to promote healthy eating and to
learn important life skills. Now with support from Filippo Berio, Rotary Young Chef has grown into a
prestigious national competition.
The students, Calypso Squibb, Edwina Chow and Nell Salvoni each cooked a two course meal for 2 people.
All students chose to use fish as the main part of their dishes, embracing the
healthy eating aspect. The competition was judged by Rotary member Mollie
Foster and Chef Colin Hankins from “Taste” St Agnes (@tastestagnes).

compete against other students
from local schools on 15th January
at Richard Lander, she has also
won a day of work experience at
Taste St Agnes with Colin Hankins
where she will have a chance to
perfect her dish.
Tasty pasty developments
Congratulations to Prep 6 pupil Lucia Harrison who has won the Proper Cornish “design a pasty
competition” and will have her idea of a “Full Cornish Breakfast” pasty developed by their New Product
development team early in the New Year!

Prep School
Prep Six – Victorian Workshop
Prep Six travelled back in time on 17th November. They
were transported to a Victorian school room, taught by
a ‘Victorian’ school teacher and took part in ‘Victorian’
lessons. This all happen at Helston Folk Museum, the
role-play experience brought their History topic to life.
After the workshop the girls had a chance to handle
different Victorian artefacts, they had great fun trying to
work out what different objects were used for. It was a
brilliant morning, a lesson in history they will remember
for a long time to come. Mrs Bateson.
City of Lights Parade
For the second year running, Truro High was asked to host the start of the
Truro City of Lights Parade on 19th November. Prep 5&6 had been busy
making willow lanterns for this year’s theme to commemorate the centenary
of the start of the First World War. As one of the main exhibits was to be a
Land Girl, they chose to make chickens! It was a cold crisp night and 26
Primary Schools and some of the samba and marching bands joined us as
we lit our lanterns and made our way down Falmouth Road and into Lemon
Street to start the parade!
Elf Workshop
On Wednesday 3rd December Prep 2 were sent a very special
letter from Father Christmas asking for their help. His elves
were snowed under with wrapping and asked Prep 2 to wrap
and make some presents. As a treat he left some hot
chocolate, stollen, mince pies and panettone. Then in the
afternoon he set the girls a challenge asking them to find the
true meaning of Christmas. Miss Mills and Mrs D headed for
Marks and Spencer but it wasn’t there! Finally Prep 2 went to
the Cathedral where they looked at the manger and lit a
candle by the statue of St. Nicholas.
The end of term passed in a flurry of Christmas fun and frivolities.
The Prep School also received a visit from Maid Marian (well, the actress who will play her in the Panto at
the Hall for Cornwall) and they had fun dancing to the Robin Hood music. However the last few weeks
were, of course, dominated by preparations for our own production of ‘The Keykeeper’, a light-hearted romp
through history full of songs, dancing and a multitude of props and costume changes. The Nursery and
Pre-Prep Nativity play was woven into the story and, as usual, they stole the show.
The very end of term was tinged with a hint of sadness as we said good bye to three members of staff: Kate
Griffin, Tracey Kemp and Sophie Turriff. We are sorry to see them go but wish them every happiness in
their new, exciting lives. Next term we are looking forward to welcoming ‘Naturally Learning’ to run our
Nursery and Annabelle Ramsey who will be our new Prep Three teacher.

Prep sports results
Wednesday 5TH November Netball v St Joseph
Prep 3/4 this was a very close game with lots of good court play. THS won 2-1
Prep 5/6 the girls worked well together and showed good court play and some excellent shooting. THS won
7-2.
Boarding
Since arriving back after October half term, these last 6 weeks in the boarding houses seem to have
disappeared in a flurry of Halloween biscuits, fireworks, karaoke, Earl Grey cupcakes and Christmas carols.
Earlier in November, many girls from Rashleigh enjoyed a trip to the fireworks display in Truro and some
came along to a lovely village bonfire in Tregony, where we warmed up while enjoying the bonfire, before
having sparklers and watching the main fireworks display.
There was also a ten pin bowling trip which many of the girls came along to, bringing out a great
competitive spirit in lots of our girls. Some Dalvenie girls continue to enjoy swimming sessions at the
weekends and during evenings and recently it’s been lovely to see our boarders playing volleyball and
badminton as well as joining in with the weekly Zumba classes. A dedicated group of Rashleigh girls have
continued to go to badminton training on a Friday night at Penair School. Their coach has only positive
things to say about their commitment to badminton and it is great to hear their stories about club games and
tournaments.
In the last few weeks, the build up to Christmas has well and truly begun. Our Christmas trees have been
carefully decorated and both lounges are looking very festive. Dalvenie boarders enjoyed mince pies and
Christmas music while decorating the tree and making Christmas paper chains. On the final weekend, we
tucked in to a wonderful Christmas dinner cooked by the kitchen staff before heading back to the lounge
where we exchanged ‘Secret Santa’ gifts, before forming teams to compete in the extreme sport of
marshmallow and spaghetti tower building! The winning team’s creation was a true feat of engineering, but
it sadly only managed to stay upright for 4 seconds before slowly collapsing. Some enthusiastic multi-lingual
Christmas karaoke followed and we all got a little bit sad thinking that some of our girls would be starting
their last ever week at Truro High School. We will miss them terribly but we’ll also have lots of lovely
memories of the girls and their adventures this term. We would love to see them again soon, and hope they
have enjoyed their time here.
Rashleigh also hosted a Secret Santa party, with all girls exchanging gifts, enthusiastically singing
Christmas songs and enjoying their last few days together with two girls who are sadly leaving the house.
Despite being sad to wave goodbye to some of our girls, we look forward to seeing them when they visit
England and we’re already looking forward to meeting our new girls who join us in January.

Awards and achievements
Musical success
Congratulations to Molly Leigh who has passed her Grade 6 Piano with Distinction. Molly also entered the
following events at the St Austell Music Festival: Piano (Merit) 3rd place; Vocal solo (Distinction) 1st place;
Flute (Distinction) 1st place; Violin 1st place (Outstanding) - Molly won a further cup for the highest mark in
strings; Flute trio 1st place; Farleys Flutes 1st place. Molly was also asked to perform her flute and violin at
the Gala Concert.
Woodwind success at Camborne Music Festival
Grades 1 - 2 Woodwind Class: Trophy awarded to Lowena Olver; 2nd place Saffron Harris-Leslie; 3rd place
Izzie Leigh; Nancy Ellemann and Roisin O'Halloran received Merit Certificates.
Grades 3 - 4 Woodwind Class: 2nd place Eleanor Sneesby.
Grades 7 - 8 Woodwind Class: Trophy awarded to Abigail Leigh; 2nd place Layla Stuart; Minnie Fok
received Merit Certificate.
Most outstanding woodwind player trophy awarded to: Abigail Leigh.
As Mrs Lynne was due to retire at the end of term, the Flute Choir held a concert in Piran Performing Arts
Centre and performed in front of parents, staff and friends. Mrs Lynne has taught many girls at Truro High
over the past 18 years and we are very grateful to her and wish her well in her retirement.
Out and about
Clothes Show Live!
We had a lovely time at the Clothes Show... Highlights were... Any member of One
Direction for £10, crazy glitter lip gel, lots of Christmas bargains and an amazing show at
the fashion theatre... But the best highlight of all was the excellent behaviour of our
students, who, despite a 5am start from school, were cheerful and nice to everyone all
day.

Visit to Parliament
In November, Tia Joslyn in Y12 visited the House of Commons:
I have been a Member of Youth Parliament for nearly two years now, and annually we run a nationwide
campaign called Make Your Mark. This allows all the young people in our constituencies to vote for the
issue which they feel most affects them – such as euthanasia, exam resits and work experience. This year,
in Cornwall, 2,100 young people took part, and in the UK, 800,000 took part – nearly a million young people

having a voice. The top five issues chosen were votes at 16, exam resits in Maths and English, increasing
the living wage, improving mental health services and allowing all young people some work experience.
Then, on 14th November, I was able to travel up to London and partake in a debate in the House of
Commons regarding these issues. Aside from MPs, we were the only people allowed to sit on the green
benches, enriched with history and debate. The debates we had were filled with passion and it is so
inspiring to see young people fully engaged in politics, and already are actively trying to improve things. At
the end of the day it was announced that the top two issues that we had voted for were increasing the
national living wage and improving mental health services for young people. These now become our
national campaigns for a year, and to achieve our aims we will write to MP’s, local Councillors, influential
people, and try to bring these issues to the forefront of our society. Votes at 16 has been in the news a lot
recently – this is due to the fact that this was our campaign last year.
Being an MYP has been an incredible experience but, unfortunately, my role ends in February. The
highlight really was debating in Parliament – I left feeling inspired, and knowing I had met the young people
who will be future leaders of our country. Tia Joslyn.
PTA
Thank you
A huge thank you to everyone who has been involved with supporting the PTA over the past term. Your
donations for the Christmas Fayre were fantastic and the combined Prep and Senior event raised
£2,729.47! Thank you also to Charlotte Bradley and Kitty Van Den Heuvel for managing the sale of ice
creams in the Prep playground after school on Fridays: this raised £225 in the first half of the Autumn term!
We welcome all parents to our monthly informal meetings (held in Rashleigh boarding lounge). Our next
meeting will be in January (date to be confirmed). All details of events and times are posted on the PTA

Fundraising
Christmas Shoe Box appeal
This year Mr Mothersole’s Christmas Shoe Box appeal for
Samaritans Purse received fantastic support from the girls.
183 boxes were collected, including a number collected by
Mounts Bay (Lyonesse) Senior Section Unit (for 14-26 year
olds within Girlguiding UK) which Rebecca Winn is a
member of. They coordinated a collection locally in the
Penzance area and collected 33 Christmas shoeboxes. The
boxes were for a selection of age groups ranging from 2
year olds up to 16 years of age for both girls and boys who
will receive few, if any, presents at Christmas.

Art supplies for Tanzania
The Art Department have donated a range of art materials and books to the Don Bosco Secondary school
in Moshi, Tanzania. The school is run by the Salesian Order and has a close connection with our local
Catholic community here in Truro. A local retired teacher, Paul Barnes, has spent time in Tanzania working
at the school on a number of occasions and is currently raising funds to build a science lab there. The
school has limited facilities and we hope that our small contribution can help them to experience art lessons
for the first time. Paul will be travelling to Tanzania in January with all the charity contributions he has
collected and we will be able to hear about the direct results of this charity, when Paul returns from his visit.

Old Girls’ Association news
Reunion lunch for 1955-65 leavers
It was wonderful to welcome back 40 ‘Old Girls’ and some former members of staff to our reunion lunch on
8th November. For some, it was the first time they had returned to school since they left and they were
excited to see how much had changed, and how much they remembered. Tours of the school were
followed by a delicious buffet lunch and for many it was a chance to catch up with old friends and their
news. Miss Murphy was as always much sought after and there was an orderly queue of ladies eagerly
waiting to meet her as they entered the Dining Room!

reunion last Saturday. We thoroughly enjoyed the day, the delicious lunch and seeing so many old
friends. The tour of the school brought back so many memories and we could not get over some of the
changes and improvements - especially Rashleigh House, where we lived from 6 to 12 years old in vast
dormitories!”

was such a bittersweet experience for us all, I think! It was so lovely to catch up with old friends, particularly

was an oddly disorientating experience to tour the school - highly reassuring, though confusing, to
recognise a few bits! Lovely to catch up with various friends - and to be able to have a word with Miss
Murphy.
Strange coincidence: Spent the afternoon re-visiting the Truro town centre - and was delighted to find they
were rehearsing for Britten’s ‘War Requiem’ in the Cathedral and stayed to listen. One of my vivid
memories from THS days is of sitting with Miss Worton (who I think was one of the best teachers at school in that odd little store-room behind the milkbar, where she was coaching me for Oxbridge entrance)
listening on the radio to the very first performance of ‘War Requiem’ from Coventry Cathedral. Made an
immense impression on me at the time, and my sister Catherine subsequently gave me the record for my
21st birthday (I still have it!). Odder still, of course, we came down to the Midlands when Geoff, my
husband, took over as Head of History at one of the very big Coventry comprehensives, so got to know the
Cathedral (with its glorious Piper windows) very well. And finally, to be sitting listening to the Truro
Cathedral rehearsal on the Centenary Remembrance weekend even odder still! So - again, many thanks.”

forward to it, but had a great time. As Helen Corrigan (nee Fogarty) showed us around the memories of
what we got up to came back. I was telling my daughter last night about wetting the chalk, putting paper in

the piano so Miss Buddle could not play and taking the clothes hooks off the wall in the cloakroom as a
keepsake when we left!”

must have taken a lot of work, but it was a very enjoyable occasion and the lunch was delicious. Very

Back to School Day 2014
A great day was had by all at this year’s Back to School
event: we enjoyed a refreshment and welcome from the
new Headmaster before being escorted off to our various
classes by current students. I opted to try some of the
classes that weren’t on offer to me when I was a pupil and
really loved my introduction into Psychology and Classical
Civilisation while others enjoyed lessons ranging from
Drama to Religious Philosophy. Lunch in the Dining Hall
was a wonderful tasty treat followed by much laughter as
we looked back at old school photos and tried to spot
ourselves!

Obituary: Mrs Pauline Williams
Taught at Truro High School 1948-1980; died 10th March 2014
Truro High School was the centre of my mother's world for over 30 years. She was passionate about
everything the School stood for, and never ceased being proud to feel she belonged to such a place of
learning and inspiration. Many of you remember that in old age she continued to attend as many reunions
as she could, even towards the end of her life, in a wheelchair.
At the recent Old Girls' Reunion for the 1955-1965 leavers, so many of her previous pupils came to me full
of how her enthusiasm had inspired and influenced them, from Nature Study and biology, to tennis,
rounders, netball. And most of all, people tell me, for the devotion she gave to all those under her care. (I
have to say that, as children, Katrina and I definitely felt that we were at the end of the line!)
Several of her former pupils kept in touch with her throughout her life and their visits gave her huge
pleasure. It was wonderful to see some of them make long journeys to attend her funeral in March.
Her career at Truro High started with her teaching juniors. As well as Nature, English was a passion, and
I'm sure many can remember the drama productions she created, in conjunction with the Art Department
and Mrs Perry's music. 'Toad of Toad Hall' and 'Hansel and Gretel' stand out in my memory. She added
Biology and sport in the senior school to her repertoire. People will remember the enthusiasm and energy
she brought to everything she was involved in.
Her expeditions were legendary (although certain members of staff were known to call them 'jaunts'!); she
was in the vanguard of teachers who understood that more is learnt from exploring and experiencing things
outside the classroom than from books and boards.
She retired in her 60s to join my father who had taken early retirement as a headmaster, so that they could
spend more leisure time together, both enjoying boating and Pauline continuing to play tennis. It also gave
them time to indulge their interest in travel, particularly to Central and South America where Katrina lives.
But she could not desert Truro High, and was called back from retirement to take on another generation,
every bit as energetic as before. I suppose she will always be remembered for skipping about the place in
her tiny little gym skirt or tennis whites, running down and back from the town in her lunch hour still in her
gym clothes.
It has been incredibly rewarding to hear from so many generations of past pupils just how much they learnt
from her, and what an outstanding teacher she was. However, I thought people might be interested to see
a side of Pauline they might not know. She filled a book with reminiscences of her earlier life: apparently

she was so uncontrollable a teenager that her parents took her away from Truro Grammar School and sent
her to boarding school at Eastbourne for her final year, in an attempt to instil some discipline in her. It was
not totally successful—I quote a passage from her memoirs:
'When I got to college, aged 18, I kicked over the traces.......I didn't study much and was always out with the
boys from the colleges. I did well in exams, but my teaching was abysmal; they sent me to Battersea, I had
no discipline, I became ill and couldn't do my finals. Result: after 2 years I came home with a 'C' and no job.
My parents were furious!'
Obviously something changed by the time she entered Truro High! Juliet Williams.

Fond farewells
Sophie Turriff joined the school as a pupil ten years ago.
Following a year away after A levels when she went to
work with horses, she came back to the nursery first as a
volunteer, then as an apprentice and finally as a full blown
member of staff. She has been much loved by all of the
children and quickly became a highly valued colleague.
She is leaving us to move to Devon where she is setting
up a new home and hopes to embark upon a teacher
training course.
Tracey Kemp first started working at the High School fifteen years ago having previously been with us as a
student on a college placement. She quickly became a vital part of the nursery team and took over as
manager five years ago. Tracey is much loved and admired by children, parents and colleagues and has
been responsible for many innovations in the nursery. She will be greatly missed but she too is keen to
pursue a teaching career and so has moved into the maintained sector to help her achieve this dream.
Kate Griffin came to the school ten years ago having relocated from
London for her husband’s work, to cover a maternity leave for two
terms, and has never left! She is an incredibly adaptable and talented
teacher and has been a Prep School form teacher, Senior School
tutor, Latin and RP teacher and has taught all of the Prep School
French. On the last day of term she joined the Prep 6 Latin club in
their version of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarves’ (see photo)!
Kate’s retirement will leave a big hole in the Prep School but she has
promised to be a regular visitor and even to accompany Prep Five
and Six on their residential visit in May.
