About the Conroe Symphony Orchestra
The Conroe Symphony Orchestra (CSO) was founded the summer of 1997 by Herb
Armentrout, Mary Curtis Taylor, and Mark Multop, with the Mission of “adding to the
cultural enrichment of the community, assuring a better quality of life for the Conroe
area.” Since 1997, the Conroe Symphony has experienced rapid growth and now has
three divisions: The Conroe Symphony Orchestra, The Friends of the Symphony, and
the Conroe Symphony Youth Orchestra. The CSO organization includes more than
225 volunteers who provide support for the presentation of five classical concerts, major
fundraising events, youth orchestra activities and educational and community outreach
programs.
The CSO Season includes traditional classical treasures, popular favorites and featured
soloists. The major objective is to provide the audience with the best possible musical
experience, while showcasing the talent and hard work of our area musicians. The
Symphony’s objectives could not be accomplished without the talent and hard work of all
of the volunteers.
The Vision of the Conroe Symphony Orchestra is to “be recognized as one of the
outstanding community orchestras in the State of Texas.” As a 501 (c) 3 non-profit
community orchestra, the CSO is supported through individual and corporate donations
and grants, in addition to ticket sales. Since ticket sales generate only a portion of
the income, the Symphony depends very heavily on donations from our supporters to
accomplish the Mission and our long-term Vision.

Gayle Laminack
President, Board of Directors
Dr. Don Hutson
Music Director & Conductor
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the CSO, it is my pleasure to
welcome you to our 19th season, “A Season of Symphonic Celebration”.
The Conroe Symphony Orchestra is growing by leaps and bounds! We
are so fortunate to be here in Montgomery County at this time, where
our support and our volunteers have blossomed in remarkable ways.
At our “Pardner Up” fundraising event recently, many of you stepped
up and pledged unprecedented funds to help us continue to fulfill our
mission to present orchestral music for our awesome community. We are so thankful for your patronage and support,
and promise to develop and foster musical activities for the benefit of all our citizens.
You are definitely in for a treat this season. Our five concerts will feature extraordinary artists, both local and national,
some of whom have appeared on Broadway and some who are just starting their musical careers by winning outstanding
musical competitions here in Texas. Plus our orchestra has dazzled us with their exceptional abilities. There will be
something for every member of your family, and we hope to see you at each event.
Meanwhile, please join our volunteer arm, the Friends of the Symphony, where you can contribute in so many ways.
We have many exciting opportunities for your service, and, in turn, you will learn more about what it takes to present
our concerts and develop our outstanding local musical talents. It is such a fulfilling experience, and you will be able to
make a difference in the lives of our friends and neighbors.
Lastly, I encourage you to buy season tickets and introduce your children to the magic of live music. They will never
forget who took them to their first concert.....
Thanks for being part of our musical family!
Sincerely,
Gayle Laminack, President
CSO Board of Directors, 2015-2016

Conroe Symphony Orchestra
Dear Friends,
Every year in the same month I get to write two letters. One is
almost a sad one as it is the prelude to the final concert of the
season. We look back over the year and reflect on all that has
been done. And, 2014-15 was a great year.
The second letter is exciting because I get to announce the
coming CSO season. And, if you thought last year was great then
hang on to your hat. The 2015-16 season is shaping up to be
another wonderful year.
We will start the season off in Gala-style as we welcome Sal
Viviano back to help us celebrate the life and music of Frank
Sinatra. Sal is no stranger to Conroe and the CSO. He has performed many times with us over the
past 10 years. Sal has developed a program called “Perfectly Frank: A Century of Sinatra” that will take
you on a journey through the music of one of the greatest pop singers of our time.
At Christmas we will welcome YTA Gold Medalist winner, pianist Yurie Farnsworth, to perform
Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 23. Prepare yourself to be amazed. We will make sure we
do all we can to put you in the Christmas spirit at the “Festive Christmas” concert.
We then skip to the February concert where it is always about “The Music of Amore”, and where we
will feature a number of memorable love songs. But we are also excited to welcome one of our own
back. Alfredo (Freddy) Olivera de la Vega will join us to perform the famous guitar concerto Concierto
de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo.
April’s concert is “Family Night at the Symphony”. One of the things we are most proud of at the CSO
is to see all of the young children who come to our concerts. This concert is all about them. We are
proud to welcome a very talented young violinist Fiona Shea. She dazzles audiences from all over the
world with her playing and we are proud to welcome her here. We will also feature a piece written
for children called Tubby the Tuba.
The final concert of the year, “A Hero’s Salute”, is all about celebrating the heroes of the Armed Forces
that have made all we do possible. Join us and bring your flags for a celebration.
Of course, we want to always say thank you for all you do to support what we are all about here at the
CSO. Our only goal is to make lives better through music. You are why we are here.
We look forward to a great season.
Don Hutson

musical interests, Dr. Hutson teaches a seminar, “The Cowboy Solution”, which uses horses of different training
levels and abilities to demonstrate to corporate executives and teamsthe importance of building partnerships based
on communication, trust and mutual respect.

One meaning of the word “friend” is a person with whom one has a bond. What better way
to bond than at glittering social events such as our recent celebrity roast of Judge Alan “Barb”
Sadler. The gratifying success of our recent golf tournament, and our “Pardner Up” gala in
the company of like-minded fans assure these will become cherished traditions in the future.

Best wishes for another season of beau0ful music! A friend is also one who has similar hopes and dreams. Our ongoing focus is to nurture the
burgeoning artistic growth of the Conroe Symphony Orchestra in whatever ways present
themselves to us as possibilities.
For a community organization a friend is also, clearly, someone who freely makes an
investment of their personal resources. Time and talent are critical to our continuing
success, as is monetary support. The generous influx of friendly dollars enables this amazing
organization to underwrite equipment needs, special artists, and many unseen production
costs that are vital to its growth. Such generosity has been a key element in our symphony’s
recognition as being unique in size and artistry.
Consider this a very special invitation for you to “Pardner Up” with us as we anticipate
another banner year!

17 The Lavoy & Anne Moore Award
The Lavoy & Anne Moore Award is an
annual award given to a deserving orchestra
player who has shown leadership, dedication
and commitment to the orchestra.
The Lavoy & Anne Moore family presents a cash
award to the recipient along with the recipient’s
name being added to a beautifully framed baton
and walnut case that Lavoy used when he was
invited to be a CSO guest conductor.
Kim Bellini, a flutist in the Conroe Symphony, was awarded the Lavoy & Anne Moore
Award for 2015 at the June 27, 2015 patriotic concert.
Kim is a charter member of the Conroe Symphony Orchestra, and has been playing
the flute since she was 10 years old. “Music is such an important part of my life.
Playing an instrument for an audience is extremely rewarding, and I’m so thankful
to be part of the CSO,” Bellini said. “Receiving the Lavoy Moore Award was a true
honor, and I appreciate the recognition for my dedication to the symphony since its
inception in 1997.”

Conroe High School
The Conroe Symphony Orchestra
with
Yurie Farnsworth
Pianist
Born in Berkeley, California, Yurie began playing
the piano at the age of five, and has never
stopped since. Beginning her studies with pianist
Machiko Kobialka in the Bay Area, and then onto
leading piano teachers in Portland, Oregon, Yurie
eventually became a prominent teenage pianist
in the Portland area. Some of her highlights
throughout high school include receiving 2nd
Prize at the national level of the MTNA Piano Competition, performing Grieg’s
Piano Concerto in A minor with members of the Oregon Symphony, and being
selected as the piano soloist for Portland Youth Philharmonic’s performance of
Stravinsky’s Petrushka in the piece’s centennial year.
More recently, Yurie received the Grand Prize at the 2015 Young Texas Artists
Competition, and also won the Shepherd School Piano Concerto Competition,
earning her a concerto performance with the school’s symphony orchestra. She was
also one of the youngest participants in the International Holland Music Sessions
in the summer of 2014, representing the United States, and gave a solo recital in
the historic town of Alkmaar, Netherlands.
Yurie is currently a Senior at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University,
studying with pianist Jon Kimura Parker. While her focus is on classical music,
Yurie enjoys listening to and attempting to play a variety of musical genres in her
spare time.

Alfredo “Freddy” Olivera de la Vega
Classical Guitarist
Alfredo Federico Eulogio Olivera de la Vega
(“Freddy”) was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He has been musically inclined since he was a
boy living in a home that was always surrounded
by musicians, singers, artists and actors. As a
child, he sang in children’s choirs and played the
recorder, his first instrument. When he was twelve,
he studied guitar with Maestro Sergio Lavia, an
Argentine guitarist and composer. Maestro Lavia taught Alfredo classical guitar
techniques from the Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia, and sixteenth and seventeenth
century music for the lute by different European composers.
In addition to composing, Freddy plays an impressive amount of instruments,
including the acoustic guitar, piano, electronic synthesizers, electric guitar, bass
guitar, violin, viola, cello, and mandolin. He has studied French, Italian, English,
German, and Latin so that he would be able to read works in their original language.
Alfredo has participated in groups that range from classical guitar duets to rock
bands (particularly rock and roll, Heavy Metal, Blues, and Progressive Rock), Latin
and Celtic music, as well as Argentine Folkloric music. His compositions include
music for classical and electric guitar, Neo-Baroque or Baroque guitar Etudes,
rock band music, ballads for piano and voice, and pieces for small string and wind
ensembles and a Concerto for guitar and Orchestra in D minor.
Having founded and conducted his chamber orchestra “Leipzig” in Argentina,
“Leipzig” performs a variety of orchestra originals ranging from The Beatles to Celtic
Music. His performances include small theatres, national TV and radio networks
in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. Freddy composed a rock-opera in three acts for
orchestra, choir, and band titled “Sanctuary”.
Freddy has lived in Texas since 2002 with his wife Elizabeth and their three
children, Joaquin, Mary and Alejandro. He currently conducts the Conroe Youth
Symphony Orchestra (CSYO). Outside of this, he has his own rock band project
called “Fredyx” which favors his original music as well as cover songs.
