The band depends on corporate and individual sponsorships to fund its

the Zanesville Memorial Concert Band has provided local residents with an
enjoyable summer evening of entertainment, as well as providing dedicated
local musicians with an opportunity to perform.

The ZCMB - A Brief History
anesville flourished with performing arts activities in the late
1800s, and the John Bauer Band was among them. The band was
organized before 1880 and averaged 15 to 20 members. When the
band leader died in 1912, his ensemble was taken over by the American
Rolling Mills Company, and became known as the Armco Band.
The 7th Regiment and Armco bands held their concerts locally, in
McIntire Park and Putnam Park. By 1923, the two bands had merged,
taking the present day name of Zanesville Memorial Concert Band.
Today, funds for the concerts are raised by individual and corporate
contributions. An endowment fund has also been established for
anyone wishing to make a donation towards the ZMCB.
The band’s current home is Zane’s Landing Park, along the eastern
banks of the Muskingum River in downtown Zanesville. Concerts are
performed on five Sunday evenings through the summer.
Concerts remain free to the public, thanks to the generosity of our
supporters.

Remembering
Michael Engle
Michael Frederick Engle (April 2, 1987—October 17, 2014) would have described
himself as a “Band Geek,” “Sci-Fi Aficionado,” “Trekkie,” “techie,” Lego Master
Builder, and avid gun enthusiast. He loved life & tried to make the most out of every
day. He graduated from Zanesville High School in 2005 & The Ohio State University in 2009 with a major in aviation management & a minor in business. He was in
National Honor Society, the ZHS band, golf team, ran sound for the drama dept.,
sang with the Y-City Barbershoppers, was very active in the Market St Baptist church
& after graduation from OSU he did a lot of work with Mifflin Presbyterian church’s
youth program in addition to being an active alumni of AHP fraternity.
Michael held a variety of jobs throughout his life. He started working at age 16 at
Pugh Jewelers, went on to Timber Run Gardens, & his first summer home from OSU
at Zanesville Aviation where he decided that his college major was to be aviation.
After graduation from OSU he was a special projects manager at Pilot Air Freight in
Gahanna. When he landed that job, he came home telling us all that “you know, the
future is in air freight!”
One thing that was a constant for Michael was his love of music. We introduced
him to all kinds and styles of music. He tended to gravitate to classical movie sound
tracks, jazz, classic rock & what we now call “the oldies.”
Michael’s 3 biggest fears in life were: spiders, needles, and cancer, in that order.
After calling me to ask about symptoms of a urinary tract infection, I had him go
to an urgent care where he checked out fine & was told it was viral. That set off
alarms for me & I pushed very hard for him to get to a doctor. In the next 8 months,
additional symptoms started to appear & after a very stern talk from his dad, he
went to a doctor one of his roommate’s recommended who immediately sent him
for a CT scan which revealed a tumor which was the size of a pork roast in his lower
abdomen. He was diagnosed with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor (DSRCT),
a childhood cancer that very rarely develops in adults. We were told that he had a
15% chance of making it 5 years...he made it 2.
The July 17th concert was to honor his memory & his valiant fight to beat cancer. If
his story can do anything, it is our prayer that it motivates people to be proactive
in their healthcare. Cancer awareness is great—but just being aware isn’t enough.
Get your physicals, care for your bodies, & catch it EARLY! That is the true key to
beating it.

LISA GALVIN
GUEST CONDUCTOR
A native Ohioan, Lisa Galvin holds two degrees in Music Education
from The Ohio State University, and recently retired after 30 years of
successful teaching in the Reynoldsburg and Hilliard City School Districts. Her middle school and high school performing ensembles have
been invited to perform at local, state and national venues, and they
consistently received Superior Ratings at both District and State level
events sanctioned by the Ohio Music Education Association. In 2014,
Lisa was asked to join the staff of The Ohio State University Marching
Band as Interim Associate Director. She is a founding member of the
Brass Band of Columbus, where she has maintained the Principal Horn
chair for the past 31 years. She is also a founding member and Principal Horn with the Athena Brass Band, comprised of women brass
band professionals from across the United States.
Lisa’s interest in music arranging and composition has steered her
toward an active career of producing all types of music. She was
asked to join the arranging staff of The Ohio State University Marching
Band in 2008, and her music has been featured in several bowl game
appearances and popular halftime videos by the famed marching
band. Mrs. Galvin also enjoys writing solo, ensemble and large group
works for a number of middle school and high school band programs,
and she has served as a guest conductor and clinician for many bands
across the state of Ohio. In 2009, Mrs. Galvin was asked to join the
band staff of the newly-opened Hilliard Bradley High School in Hilliard,
Ohio, where she was privileged to have two original compositions
chosen as the school’s Alma Mater and Fight Song “We Are Bradley.”
She has been commissioned for numerous compositions, and in 2012
she was honored to have one of her original works premiered at the
International Women’s Brass Conference. She has original compositions published with Daehn Publications and the C. L. Barnhouse

ZANESVILLE COMMUNITY THEATER PRESENTS
Quilters
Musical by Barbara Damashek and Molly Newman
Directed by Rebecca Wagstaff
Musical Director: Chad Stemm
Show dates: September 16, 17, 23, 24/ 8:00pm / September 18, 25 / 2:30pm
QUILTERS is the story of, Sarah, a pioneer matriarch and six women, who
are called her daughters, as they face frontier life. The musical is presented as a series of short tales and tableaux matched with musical numbers,
each presenting an aspect of frontier life or womanhood.
The patches or blocks represent “girlhood, marriage, childbirth, spinsterhood, twisters, fire, illness and death.” The various patches are ultimately
assembled into one glorious, brilliantly colorful quilt, the effect is both
breathtaking and magical.
Annie Get Your Gun
Musical by Irving Berlin
Directed by Angel Palmer
Musical Director: Tom Tompkins
Audition Dates: August 14, 15 / 7:00pm
Show dates: November 4, 5, 11, 12 / 8:00pm / September 6, 13 / 2:30pm
Annie Oakley is the best shot around, and she manages to support her
little brother and sisters by selling the game she hunts. When she’s discovered by Col. Buffalo Bill, he persuades this novel sharpshooter to join his
Wild West Show. It only takes one glance for her to fall head over heels
for dashing shooting ace Frank Butler, who headlines the show. She soon
eclipses Butler as the main attraction which, while good for business, is
bad for romance. Butler hightails it off to join a rival show, his bruised male
ego leading the way, but is ultimately pitted against Annie in a final shootout. The rousing, sure-fire finale hits the mark every time in a testament to
the power of female ingenuity.
