Michael, Head Judo Instructor at Memphis Judo & Jiu-Jitsu, has been involved in the Martial
Arts his entire life. Michael began his Judo training at the age of 10 and received his Shodan in Judo in 1987. Michael’s involvement in this Olympic sport has given him the opportunity to represents the United States in international competition all over the world. In addition
to his Judo background, Michael has competed in various other grappling arts earning him
national and international recognition for his competitive accomplishments. His Martial Arts
experience and training have deep roots in self defense and hand-to-hand combat.

(2006 – Present); Head Judo Instructor - Memphis Judo & Jiu-Jitsu ( 2003 – Present); Assistant Judo
Instructor - Florida School of Judo, Tampa, FL (1994 - 1998); Assistant Judo Instructor - Michigan State
University (1990 - 1994 ); Judo Team Captain - Michigan State University (1991 – 1994); Assistant Judo

CONTACT
Jim received his 4th degree black belt in 2005 under Shigeyuki “Ace” Sukigara and Michi
Ishibashi. Jim received his Shodan in 1983 and actively competed through the 1990s. He
has been coaching Judo for over 35 years including local Judo clubs and seven years as the
head Judo coach at a Stephen F. Austin State University. Although his passion is learning/
practicing the classic art of Judo, he has coached many successful collegiate and national
level competitors. Jim moved to Tennessee in 2006 from Texas where he was very active in
Judo: Vice-President of Tennessee Judo Inc. (USA Judo) presently, Tennessee State Championship
Tournament Host from 2006-015, Executive Board of Texas Judo Inc. 2001 – 2006 , 2000 U.S. Senior
Nationals - Venue Coordinator & Announcer , 2006 U.S. Senior Nationals - Announcer, 1996 – 2006 Tournament Director – Kodokan Judo & Physical Fitness, Invitational Tournament (A Texas All Star Tournament) , Official Judo representative - Dallas 2012 Olympic Bid Committee.
Secretary/Treasurer – Brenda Cook, Shodan
Started judo in 1971 with Frayser Judo Club, competed from 1971 until 1999. During her
completion years, she competed in tournaments all over, she competed in the AAU Junior
Olympics and is a 3 time bronze medalist, she was honored to receive the Female Outstanding Competitor award at the Junior Olympic Regional’s in 1977, First place at Sr. National Trials in 1981. Since her competition days, she has been an Assistant Coach at Frayser Judo,
Club, and has held the Office of Secretary for Frayser Judo Club. For the past 10 plus years she has
held positions of Secretary and Treasurer for Tennessee Judo Inc. She holds the Rank of Sandan, is a
Regional Certified Coach and a Regional Certified Referee. She still attends many local and regional
tournaments and helps with registration and weigh-in as well as works the head competition table, and
score tables.
Promotion Board
Chairman - Glen Campbell, Yodan
Started Judo in 1965 at the Davis YMCA in Memphis under Jim Cardell. Later also trained
under Ralph Graves and Ryozo Nakamura. Promoted to Shodan in 1969 at age
18. Competed nationally for about 10 years. Head coach for three different clubs and now
assistant head coach at Memphis Judo and Jiu Jitsu. Promoted sandan 1976 and yodan
2012.

Mike Takata, Godan
Mike started judo in 1977 under Sensei Sam Imoto in Visalia, CA. He practiced judo under Sensei Willy Cahill at Stanford
University and Sensei Donald Tyrell at the University of Tennessee. Mike is a former Junior and High School national champion. He represented USA in World High School Team Championships in Tokyo, Japan and Junior Pan-American Championships in Mexico City in 1987. Mike has been the coach at the University of Tennessee since 1996. Represented the
USA as a referee at the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China, and numerous other international events. Former Junior and High School national champion. Represented USA in World High School Team Championships in Tokyo, Japan and
Junior Pan-American Championships in Mexico City in 1987. He served as Secretary of the National Collegiate Judo Association for
eight years. Mike currently holds the rank of Godan and is an IJF Continental referee.
Brain Rowe, Rokudan
Brian is the Head Instructor, Johnson City Judo Club (1983-present) and holds the Rank Rokudan, 6th degree black belt
(7.3.2003). Prior to Johnson City Judo Club he has been very active in the sport for a number of years: Coaching: Head
instructor, YMCA at Johnson City (1981-1983), Head Instructor, University of Missouri-Columbia Judo Club (1978-79), Assistant instructor, University of Southampton Judo Club, UK(1973-77). Competition: British Universities, Gold 1976, British
Universities, Silver 1977, National Trials, Gold 1977. Teaching: Judo, course for undergraduate credit (1hr) East Tennessee
State University, 1995-2001, Martial Arts Faculty Advisor, East Tennessee State University, 1983-1990. Affiliations: United States Judo
Association , 1987-present, continuous Gold patron life member, US Judo Inc (USA Judo), 1980-present, continuous, Tennessee Judo
Incorporated, 1980-present , President, 1982 - 1984, 2003 – 2009, Tennessee Judo State Promotion Board, 1984-present, Sanction
Officer, 1997-2002, Chair, Referee Certification Committee, 1997- 2009,.
Bill Ryan, Shichidan
Sensei Ryan is the Director and Head Coach for Clarksville Judo Club, which services Clarksville & Ft. Campbell Areas. Bill has spent over 50 years training in Martial Arts and has over 28 years of experience as an Instructor. He holds the
following Martial Arts Ranks: Judo Shichidan (8th Degree) Jujitsu Godan (5th Degree) Tae Kwon Do Sandan (3rd degree)
Aikido Shodan (1st Degree). He served 23 years in the US Army and retired a Master Sergeant. Formally served as a base
instructor for Ft. Campbell combat units including Special Operations personnel. He has had the privilege to train with
some great Judoka senseis: Kotani, Sacabi, George Harris, Jim Bregman, Karl Geise, Charlie Robinson, Phil Porter, Greg Fernandez,
Aurbrey Marzel, and Anton Geisenk.
Jim Irvine and Brenda Cook are also members of the promotion board.
Athlete Representative
Jason Rieger, Nidan
Jason has been in judo since 1998. He got started in judo after he saw part of the annual UT Martial Arts club judo tournament while in college. After he graduated he was lucky enough to have the opportunity to continue to work out with the
club. He currently holds the rank of Nidan and is a nationally certified referee. He is not only a referee Jason is still an
active competitor,
Nick Sparks, Nikyu
Nicholas Sparks has been playing judo since 2010 and currently holds the rank of Nikyu. While he is currently school at
Ole Miss. he maintains his relationship with judo and is in good standing with USA Judo. He is a member of Memphis
Judo and Jiu Jitsu and won the 2012 Junior Olympic Championship in Irving, Texas. “Judo has and is a very important
part of my life and it is of the utmost importance to me and I promote our sport at every opportunity that I can! “
Matt Black, Ikkyu
Started Judo at Frayser Judo at the age of 14, as a youth he was an avid competitor, he returned to Judo at the age of 34
and he now holds the rank of Ikkyu. Now his focus is primarily on coaching with just enough competition to keep him sharp.
In Shiai the majority of his wins have come via Osaekomi as Matthew favors Ne Waza. His Tokui Waza are Harai Goshi,
Ura Nage, and Mune Gatame.

John Pepper, Sankyu
John Pepper began studying Judo in 2006 at Columbia Judo Dojo now known as Tennessee Judo Academy, under the
instruction of Terry Spencer and Jim Irvine. From 2008 to 2015 he used software which he developed to run registration
bracketing and score boards for the Tennessee state Judo Championships. John currently holds the rank of Sankyu.

The 2015 University of Tennessee Judo Tournament was a great success with competitors from 33 clubs across 9 states.
Thanks to everyone for their support of our annual event. Tournament results and award photos have been posted to our

Mike Takata just returned from Barbados where I represented the USA as a referee at the
2015 Barbados International Invitational. Attached is a photo of the USA referee delegation
with Sensei Efigenio Braafhart, PJC Referee Commissioner for South America and Sensei Keith
Weithers, Referee Director for Barbados Judo.
Russell Ragghianti and several members of the University of Tennessee Judo Club conducted
a participatory judo clinic as part of a program in Knoxville, TN on December 5 promoting
sports activities for visually impaired youth
