Meet our Newest Members
Don & Ruth
Feld transferred
their membership
from Bethel
Grove Church.
Ruth was the
organist at
Bethel Grove for
many years. She taught Sunday school and Bible
School for many years. Ruth served with her
husband while he was in the Air Force. Don
attended this church when he was younger. He
went to college and then joined the Air Force and
served as a pilot. He taught Sunday school while
he was in the Air Force.
Don and Ruth just celebrated their 50th wedding
anniversary on August 29. They live at the
Harvester near Rhodes, and were invited to come
to church by the Boyd's and the Bristley's. They
have many friends here at First Presbyterian
Church. Both Don & Ruth are retired.
Their sponsor is Doug Boyd. We are glad to
have them as new members.
Eric & Tressa
Voss joined the
church by confession
of faith. Their children
are Nolan and Caden
Bartlett, and Charlotte
and Eliott Voss. Caden
is a Freshman and
Nolan is in the 6th
grade in the
Marshalltown Schools;
Charlotte is in 1st
grade and Eliott is in
preschool at West
Marshall School. The
family lives in St.

joined the church.
Their sponsor is Craig Henze, and we
welcome the Voss' as new members.
Cello-Piano Concert
On Sunday October 4, at 2 p.m., First
Presbyterian Church, 101 South Center Street,
Marshalltown will host a concert with Don Perkins
and Shieko Uno. They will present a duo recital
for cello and piano featuring a program that
centers on music of J. S. Bach as a starting point
and then follows the inspiration of Bach to music
written by Camille Saint-Saens, Max Reger, and
Heitor Villa-Lobos.
Good News from First Presbyterian Church Sept. 30, 2015, page 1
Don Perkins began his cello studies with Jack
Forrest Fowler at Rogers Elementary School in

The Aging Leaves
“How beautifully leaves grow
old,” wrote 19th-century essayist
John Burroughs. “How full of light
and color are their last days.”
Society doesn’t think highly of
old age. Beauty products tout the
supposed virtues of maintaining a
youthful appearance. Older adults’
wisdom, born of much life experience, is often
disparaged, ignored or not sought. But God says
this about the righteous, whose lives are rooted in
Him: “In old age they still produce fruit; they are
always green and full of sap, showing that the
LORD is upright” (Psalm 92:14-15, NRSV).
The aging leaves of autumn can prompt us to
look for beauty in the seniors among us, to notice
the light and color that still abound. From all the
fruit they still produce — service, prayer, love —
may we learn about living faithfully until our own
last days.

Awesome Presbys
Awesome Presbys, our group for 5th-8th
graders, meets the second and fourth Sundays of
the month from 2:00 – 3:00 at the Gathering Place.
After discussing activities for the fall, the kids
helped set up the inflatables and games for the
Sunday school Kickoff. Be looking for more
information on Awesome Helpers, activities in
which the kids do things to help others in and out
of church.
Awesome Helpers – In late October and
November the Awesome Presbys will be
Awesome Helpers. If you need help with any odd
small jobs that 10-12 year olds can do, arrange for
some Awesome Helpers with Michelle at 641-7535929. Jobs the kids can do include moving boxes
or items, washing windows (none requiring a
ladder), storing lawn furniture, taking boxes to 2nd
Chance on Third or Goodwill, etc. Our calendar is
limited, and jobs will be filled on a first come
basis. Thank you.

God Sightings – Summer 2015
During VBS and throughout
the summer, we asked the children
and adults to share their God
sightings. They were written on
special sheep and put to graze in
the God Sightings Pasture, first in
the Narthex and later in the Lower
Lounge. There were five pages of
blessings shared! Here are a few of them:
I see God in all of what the children could do &
learn
Garden produce from a tiny seed!
Beautiful sunsets
I have seen God’s perfect timing and perfect
ways.

Sunday school
Wednesday Club
Summer Sunday school came to an end on
September 6. Thank you to Doug and Karen
Bacon for teaching this month. Our regular
Sunday school began on September 13, with
Wynona Anderson leading Gathering with Cindy
Butler playing some favorite songs on piano.
Thank you to Karin Podhajsky, Lauren &
Leah Mosher for helping with Children's Church.
Our Sunday school kickoff was great fun. We
had inflatables, a
lip sync stage,
goofy games, snocones & popcorn,
and a fish pond in
the parking lot.
This was followed
up with a potluck
and a movie,
Ragamuffin, the
story of Rich
Mullins, who wrote
“Awesome God.”
Thank you to all of
the youth and
adults who helped
make this day a good church memory for our
children.
The children studied Samuel, including
Hannah’s prayers for a child and God’s call, in
Sunday school in September. Ashley Johnson and
Amber Young, our new Carpenters Workshop
teachers, started off by challenging our 4th & 5th
graders to try some baby food (bananas) to bring
the Bible story
to life.
Students in
Bibleland.com
are enjoying
the new
computers
which, along
with our
teachers,
were dedicated on September 13. In October, the
children will learn about David.
Wednesday Club will start October 7, and run
through November 18. We meet in the Gathering
Place from 2:45 – 5:00 on Wednesday afternoons.
Wednesday Club is open to children in K-4th
grade, but space is limited, so please turn your
registration forms in quickly.
Volunteers are needed for our Wednesday
Club ministry. We need people to bring snacks,
ride along on the bus, and help in whatever way
necessary with the kids. Wednesday Club is a
great way to share your talents and love for God
with children, many of whom desperately need to
hear about Jesus. Plus, it is fun!
Church Women United will meet on
Friday, October 2, for a forum meeting at First
United Methodist Church at 9:15 a.m. Bonnie Ohrt
will be speaking on weaving. All are welcome to
attend.

Faith Statement
I believe in the God of fruit time and harvest,
who makes the land to bear gifts in its time and fills
our tables with the bounty of His hand;
I believe in Jesus Christ His Son, who was the
first fruit of those who slept, and brings us to
spiritual tables where our cups are always full;
I believe in the Holy Spirit, who causes us to
remember all for which we are grateful and teaches
us to see a relationship between our gifts and the
giver;
I believe in the world as the arena of my
spiritual life, where I am to share hospitality with the
stranger; for in so doing I shall fulfill the desires of
Him who has given me everything, and of His Son
and the Holy Spirit.
—John Killinger, Lost in Wonder, Love and Praise

Childhood Obesity
The percentage of children who are overweight
in the United States has doubled in the last twenty
years. Chronic diseases, such as Type II diabetes,
hypertension, orthopedic problems and even sleep
apnea which are usually associated with
overweight adults are becoming more common in
children and adolescents. The Center for Disease
Control (CDC) identifies every child who is above
the 85th percentile of Body Mass Index (BMI) as
“overweight”. (For information on BMI and growth
charts go to the CDC National Center for Health
Statistics website).
Factors which help determine if a child has or is
at risk for childhood obesity includes - family history
of obesity, sedentary lifestyle, socioeconomic
status, and poor eating habits.
Fortunately, some of these risk factors can be
modified. Although a child’s genetic makeup
cannot be changed, changing activity and eating
habits can make a positive impact on a child’s
weight and general health.
Some suggestions to help children achieve and
maintain a healthy weight are:
Participate in at least 60 minutes of physical
activity a day
Limit TV, video and computer time
Prepare and eat more meals at home, making
sure to include fruits and vegetables at every
meal
Provide healthy snacks
Limit high sugar drinks such as soda pop and
juices
If you have concerns about your child’s weight,
visit with your pediatrician or family doctor. Often
times consulting with a dietician or nutritionist can
help determine easy changes you and your family
can make in your eating habits.
Thank you sincerely for sharing our
sorrow. Your kindness is deeply
appreciated and will always be
remembered by our family. Thank you
for the peace lily you sent for Terry's
memorial service.

Colossians 2:6-7 says: “So
then, just as you received Christ
Jesus as Lord, continue to live
your lives in Him, rooted and
built up in Him, strengthened in
the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with
thankfulness.”
This passage speaks to the spiritual fullness
that God desires us to have in Christ. This
fullness comes from three things: the knowledge
and recognition of Jesus Christ as your Savior,
the continued spiritual growth and deepening of
your faith, and the outpouring of that into the world
around us.
This is a great model to all Christians of how a
Christian walk should look. I also believe the key
word in this passage is “continue”. The process of
fullness in Christ is just that: a process. It takes
time, energy, and includes making deliberate
choices on how you will live your life.
Here at First Presbyterian, we have been
working on a discipleship process, a series of
steps and opportunities modeled after this
passage. We have broken things down into three
simple words: Know, Grow, and Go. In the weeks
Good News from First Presbyterian Church, Sept. 30, 2015, page 5
to come we will be sharing with you a simple 3-step
process to help you discover your greatest
opportunity for growth, and provide you with
resources and opportunities to join with others to
Know, Grow, and Go.
Be praying over this verse and asking God
where He would like to see your heart and actions
move, and be prepared for what we hope will be a
great new way to grow in your faith!
Jon Rottink
One of the blessings of
celebrating a person’s life after
the Lord takes them home is
that as a pastor, I get to see
things like their devotional Bible.
Every life has its joys and sorrows, its’ struggles
and pains. A person’s Bible can give you an insight
into how people deal with the difficulties that come
up during our journey on earth. LaVine Meyer had
written many things in the front of her Bible. Some
of the scripture references were these:
II Timothy 1:12: For which cause I also suffer
these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I
know whom I have believed, and am persuaded
that He is able to keep that which I have committed
unto Him against that day (KJV).
Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your
heart and lean not on your own understanding; in
all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your
paths straight (NIV).
Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for
you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and
not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a
future.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first His kingdom and
His righteousness, and all these things will be given
to you as well.
Hebrews 13:5: Keep your lives free from the
love of money and be content with what you
have, because God has said, “Never will I leave
you; never will I forsake you.”
I Corinthians 15:51-55: Listen, I tell you a
mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be
changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at
the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the
dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be
changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with
the imperishable and the mortal with immortality.
When the perishable has been clothed with the
imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then
the saying that is written will come true: “Death
has been swallowed up in victory.” “Where, O
death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your
sting?”
LaVine also had this little verse written inside
the front cover:
I am standing at death’s door
Beyond which I cannot see
With eyes of faith I’ll know my Lord
Is waiting there for me.
What will our children find in our Bibles when
we pass? LaVine had the verse of scripture which
guided her through the tough times and eventually
lead her home to the Lord! I hope your Bible will
be well used and full of highlights and notes from
reading and study.
