A SPECIAL THANKS
There are so many issues with our church facilies that we take for granted: a warm
building in the winter, air condioning in the summer, clean restrooms, or cleaned floors. We
are so thankful to our Facilies Team for all they do for us, and we know many of those things
may only be noced when they stop working!
We wanted to give a special thanks to them for two items related to the fellowship hall.
First, they had the carpet professionally cleaned there (and in the nursery), and it is a
noceable improvement. Also, they added shelves in the audio/visual and storage room in the
fellowship hall and reorganized the room. It is much more useable now.
We thank them for their diligence. We can also work to thank them by not undoing all their
hard work to clean out that room!
Mission Moments

Dear Church Family,
We would like to thank you for all your support and
kindness shown to us during Daddy’s illness and death. I know
that your cards, calls, and visits were most appreciated by
him. The excellent meal provided before the funeral service
was truly appreciated as well. We are so grateful for all of your help.
Sincerely, The Family of Edwyn L. Coffey
Blessings to the Homebound Ministries.
So many cards, 73 I believe. Looking through them brought back memories of those I
knew coming to church with Lawrence the 40 years every other Sunday and looked
forward when my Ashley sang solo. So many good memories! Now I’m 94 and cherish
all. Blessings to you and keep up the good work.
Norma Flowers
To First Baptist Church Members,
Ben and I want to thank all of you for the beautiful Poinsettia which was delivered to us
by Lancy Rhyne along with about 85 Christmas cards. We appreciate every one,
especially the ones made by some of the children. We are thankful for your Christian
love and support all year. May God bless each of you in the coming year.
Love to All, Ben & Peggy Griffin

THANKSLOVING FEAST
A big thank you to everyone at First Baptist who contributed money, turkeys, or desserts
for our Thanksloving Feast. A special thank you to those of you who gave up their time
to be with family on Thanksgiving to volunteer to help cook, serve, and clean. This
home mission opportunity would not be possible without the generous help from those of
you who contributed.
This year we prepared 478 meals. The most ever!!! So many who were looking for a
meal and/or the fellowship of others on this special day found a wonderful meal and
love from our church. I can’t thank you enough for sustaining this effort for
approximately 25 years. It is supported only by your donations and not through our
church’s budget. It is my hope this mission will continue for years to come. God Bless!!

Resolutions …
The New Year has come, and many have made a New Year’s Resolution. Over 60% of
Americans make resolutions at least infrequently. We are a resolution people! Unfortunately, we
don't do as well finishing them!
The statistics of our ability to finish them are troubling. Only 8% of people are successful making
it all year. Only 64% will make it a month. By 6 months, the vast majority of us will fall by the
wayside.
Still, I think there is a value in these resolutions. Maybe we just try to cast them too far. If we
commit to lose a few pounds and at least get off our Christmas weight, that’s a vast
improvement over doing nothing at all. Since 64% make it a month, maybe that should be our
focus, Scott Griffin and I made that challenge to the youth last Sunday night. Let's make a
commitment for one month. We spent some time brainstorming some things we could do as a
commitment for and to God, and then the youth wrote down their individual commitments.
We shared a plethora of ideas. Scott shared something he read last year about having a
one word resolution. Pick one word that will reflect your commitment to God and your
commitment to others. He shared the word "grace" as a paradigm for his commitment this year. I
also thought of words like mission, compassion, hope, study, deeper, pray, communion, family,
formation, and coffee that could create some interesting movements of the Holy Spirit in our
lives. (Let me explain that last one. I thought it could be interesting to make a commitment to
have coffee with a different person each month to get to know them better and to deepen our
community in Christ. As a method of evangelism, getting to know someone over a cup of coffee
may be one of our best strategies.)
The youth named many more options.
• Commit to a prayer time each day.
•
Read a book of the Bible. (Middle school parents can note we mentioned that all of the NIV
translations of the Gospels have an AR test. That commitment can be a twofer!)
•
Do a random act of kindness each week.
•
Invite a friend to some aspect of our church life.
•
Tell someone about what Jesus means to you.
•
Pick a devotional book and use it every day this month.
•
Read a Christian book. (I shared my commitment to read C.S. Lewis this month.)
•
Work at CRO or some other mission site.
We then do the more difficult step: I invited them as they felt led to share with a partner.
They all did. Now they have someone who can ask them how they are doing with their
commitment, and we can meet next month to discuss them. Maybe then we'll make a commitment
for the next month.
As the research shows, we generally don't do well with the year-long commitments. Maybe
we can do better thinking one month at a time. That's our challenge. Will you join us? If you do,
find someone to join you and hold you accountable. To quote the great Baptist forefather of
missions William Carey, “Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God.”
Grace and peace, Kendell

CBF Children’s Choir Festival and
Cantus Children’s Choir Camp
`âá|v tÇw jÉÜá{|Ñ
The CBF Children’s Choir Festival for 2015 will be held on
Saturday, March 14, 2015 at FBC, Lumberton. The clinician for
this festival once again is Sandy Holland. Sandy directs the Young
Voices of Charlotte and is one of the premiere Children’s Choir
directors in the United States. Children love her and love to sing
for her. Choir leaders come many miles to learn from her.
Transportation and chaperone costs will be covered by the FBC
music ministry. The cost for this festival including two meals is $25 per person. To
reserve your place, please give your cash or check (in a marked envelope) to
Brian by Sunday, February 1st.
CANTUS is a an ecumenical residential choir camp for children on the beautiful
campus of Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, NC. This camp
provides spiritual, social, and musical development for the
growing child. This year’s camp is June 21-25. The cost for this
camp is $200 with a $100 per child deposit due by February
1st. CANTUS is a great step in preparing older children for
what’s ahead for them in Genesis! This camp exposes children to
great teaching, as well as allowing time to explore handbells, handchimes, musical
theatre, and other great activities. If your child is interested but cost is an issue, let
Brian know.
