Having relocated premises to Height Brooklands, a
prestigious riverside commercial office development
Samsung Techwin Europe saw an opportunity to
create a state of-the-art demonstration room where all
of the company’s very latest IP Network solutions were
to be on show.
Winsted proposed a Prestige Sight-Line console,
selected for its modern aesthetics perfect for this hightech environment, custom finished in Samsung’s
corporate colours with a vibrant blue work surface and
incorporating the Samsung logo on each side panel.
The console allows use of Winsted’s Versa-Trak display
mounting system for ergonomic comfort and
adjustability. Combined with VESA-compliant brackets,
Versa-Trak has enabled two 21in flat panel screens to
be easily attached and provides horizontal and
vertical adjustability for optimal viewing angles and
sight lines for the operating staff. The console also offers
long-term advantages through its modular design,
which allows the console to be adapted to meet
changing future requirements, thereby extending its
operational lifespan.

The state-of-the-art airport is Tunisia’s seventh
international airport boasting first class facilities and
services designed for a capacity in excess of 7 million
passengers annually.
Great importance was given to the workstations
having an optimum ergonomic design, while the use of
space
and
aesthetics
were
also
important
considerations in selecting the correct console design
and room layout for the imposing 90m high tower. A
solution based upon Winsted’s Prestige Sight-Line
range was decided upon and seamlessly integrated
into the tower formed to match the room’s curvature.
With operator comfort at mind and ensuring air-traffic
control staff can perform their highly responsible duties
without problem, a ‘reflection minimising’ dark colour
was chosen for all worktops reducing any glare from
the towers imposing windows, while LED task lighting
was incorporated into the console design ensuring an
adequate level of lighting day and night.

Birmingham New Street Station

Winsted was awarded the control room furniture
tender by WS Atkins, lead consultant on the project.
Several operational rooms at the station are involved
and the furniture provided by Winsted complies fully
with Section 12 requirements (fire safety legislation).
Sourced from Winsted’s unique range of consoles and
related equipment, designed specifically for the rail
industry, the installation comprised a large L-shaped
desk and straight console, along with two smaller
consoles in adjacent rooms.
These Section 12 consoles for rail applications consist of
modular powder coated steel assemblies and are
available as stock items, with Trespa work surfaces that
match the console finish. Winsted was also
commissioned to manufacture custom storage
cabinets in laminated fire retardant MDF.
Commenting on the consoles and ancillary furniture
supplied and installed by Winsted, WS Atkins’ Senior
Project Engineer Stuart Fenner says the equipment is
helping to maximise the control room operators’
monitoring performance: “We’re very pleased with the
specified units, which meet all of the client’s
operational requirements.”

Brussels Energy

Brussels Energy, Belgium
Brussels Energy is a public private partnership between
the Regional Brussels-Cleanliness Agency and SITA. The
site, located on the Quai Leon Monoyer 8
in
Brussels, incinerates household and commercial waste
which is then processed as a renewable energy
source.
Rockwell Automation, working with Brussels Energy,
contacted Winsted to assist with the design for the
refurbishment of the dedicated control room.
The approved design based upon Winsted Prestige
Sight-Line series consisted of 6 Sight-Line modules with
credenza, finished in a unique white gloss, integrated
with custom worktops, rack mounts and desk mounted
monitor arms. A host of accessories including task
lights, phone trays and file storage bins were also
included in the design to maximise space and increase
user efficiency. The sleek integrated solution works
perfectly in accordance with the client’s needs and
allows operators to work in comfort throughout their
shifts whilst giving a comprehensive overview of the
entire process.

Subsea 7 is one of the world's leading subsea
engineering and construction companies servicing the
oil and gas industry. The company's global offshore
operations are supported out of the UK, Africa, Brazil,
North America, Norway, The Netherlands and AsiaPacific. The Subsea 7 fleet consists of dynamically
positioned vessels which rank amongst the largest,
most modern and technically advanced in the world.
Ongoing investment in new equipment sees the latest
vessel the ‘Normand Subsea’ a state-of-the art ROV
Support vessel joining the Subsea 7 fleet. Equipped
with new technology, Subsea 7 commissioned Winsted
to design, supply and install the impressive ROV Control
Rooms. Working closely with Subsea 7, designs were
generated by Winsted addressing the Normand’s
unique requirements for seven ergonomic control
rooms and offices. With plans approved the vessel
built in Norway, was installed with custom console
solutions with 19” rack facilities, desktop touch screen
units and bespoke monitor walls.
Installation of the new control room furniture on the
Normand Subsea was undertaken by Winsted’s
installation team in Kvinesdal, Norway.

The Connex Center, a highly secure alarm receiving
centre and remote support centre is operational 24/7,
365 days a year securing streets and properties
nationally. The ability of staff to operate effectively in the
control room is a major factor influencing the response
time and outcome within incidents and consequently the
effectiveness of the group, so an ergonomic solution was
a must.
Winsted’s solution for the control room was commissioned
ahead of rival bids and provides consoles that enable
the Connex Group to achieve a number of aims - to
provide
an
ergonomically correct
environment,
compliment the modern décor of the center, whilst
providing a modular solution which allows for any future
expansion or changes in configuration to meet future
operational needs.
A bespoke three person ‘island’ control console based
on the EnVision design, with a further two workstations
providing an additional five comfortable operator
positions complete with storage were designed,
manufactured and installed. The furniture attractively
finished in a ‘non-reflective’ graphite marmoleum
matching the colour scheme of the room, teamed with
the black and silver of the framework makes the
completed room feel spacious, light and airy. The result is
an impressive site with innovative design.

SSE’s Equipment Performance Centre located at
Ferrybridge C power Station complex near Knottingly,
West Yorkshire, monitors eight major power generating
stations, including thermal, hydro-electric, wind
turbines and other renewable energy sources.
Winsted won a competitive tender for this project,
supplying its Prestige Insight console, which has an
overall depth of 32 inches to save valuable space and
maximise control room functionality. Winsted provided
a 15-degree curve for this custom-made console, also
designed to meet the operational space restrictions,
since the new monitoring arrangements had to be
accommodated within the same physical space as
their predecessor.

The Jumeirah Palm, Dubai is one of the world’s most
recognisable landmarks. Forming the shape of a palm
tree, the island, located off the coast of the United
Arab Emirates in the Arabian Gulf.
In order to ensure the security of its residents and
visitors, a comprehensive security plan was deemed
integral to the island’s success and prosperity. 300 Kms
of fibre network connects more than 250 cameras to
the island’s command and control centre. From a
centrally located building, the security team survey the
islands’ roads and public areas, with operators
monitoring 24/7 for any security or road traffic
incidents. Winsted supplied a series of custom-made
nine-operator consoles and worked closely with their
client Siemens LLC to create an aesthetically pleasing
yet ergonomic solution.

Siemens BT - Security Solutions SES-AE, who oversaw all
the security provision of Palm Island explains: “It was
important to have ‘Best of breed’ products across the
island’s entire security system, an ethos that was
continued through to the command and control

Winsted played a leading role in a brand new training
simulation system installed at Dyfed Powys Police HQ in
Carmarthen, Wales.
Winsted’s flagship Sight Line console system has proved
a key factor in enabling this monitoring/recording
function to operate effectively. A custom-built
horseshoe-shaped Sight Line console was supplied for
the project, following Winsted’s success in winning a
competitive tender organised by IT and audio-visual
systems integrator Tecknowledge .
Tecknowledge Proprietor Robin Newbury explains that
his company provided Dyfed Powys Police with a
consultative input to the design specification process.
“We were tasked with finding a suitable solution for the
control room fit-out and I had not dealt with Winsted
before. We therefore requested tender quotes from a
number of suppliers, but following this process we
recommended Winsted to the client. This advice was
based on the high quality of the company’s control
room furniture and the fact that Winsted offered the
best option in terms of its service and the furniture’s
return on investment. “

London Underground Ltd (LUL) is responsible for the
largest underground network in the world with no less
than 250 stations to care and maintain.
With
passengers numbers in excess of 1 billion a year makes
the network also one of the busiest.
In preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games, to be
hosted by the UK’s capital, the network has undergone
an extensive refurbishment program. As part of the
station modernisation program a key focus has been
on enhancing safety and security with the number of
CCTV cameras set to double.
110 Control Rooms across the network have been
upgraded, each installed with a bespoke control room
console supplied and installed by specialist supplier,
Winsted. Due to the unique technical challenges of
each installation, Winsted have built close bonds with
LUL’s
contractors
to
ensure
each
bespoke
manufactured
console
meets
all
operational
requirements and is seamlessly integrated into each
building while also conforming to Section 12 of the Fire
Regulations covering London Underground Tube
Lines.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is as
large national organisation, constantly developing
space technology and its applications to specific
Indian national service tasks including satellites for
communication, television broadcasting and
meteorological services, in addition to Indian Remote
Sensing Satellites systems for resources monitoring and
management. ISRO has developed two satellite
launch vehicles that are deployed into the earth’s
upper atmosphere to place satellites into required
orbits, improving both India’s communication networks
and the understanding of the ecology of the country.
The expanded headquarters in Bangalore now forms a
control base for five ISRO sites used for space vehicle
development and testing, satellite relay
communications and the storage of critical mission
supplies, such as specially formulated aviation rocket
fuel. As part of the expansion program Winsted was
selected to design and manufacture a bespoke
control room featuring multiple video walls and control
positions, where operators can observe critical launch
and mission processes via multiple explosion-proof
cameras.
