Courtney Meyer 715-210-5258 St. John's Lutheran Church May 2011 Newsletter Dear members of St. John's I am writing this article on Easter Monday. It's a beautiful day outside. I managed to be out and clean out some of my flower beds. The perennials are sprouting and leafing out, so spring must be coming. We have ham to eat for supper, or dinner, plus potatoes, corn and salad, so I can spend a little longer time on the computer. Looking back on Holy Week, I marvel at how everything played out. Palm Sunday was fun with the kids and the procession into "Jerusalem". On Monday came word of the passing of Nina Lodahl, 92 years of age. Funeral services were held on Maundy Thursday morning at 11:00. The church was packed with family and friends. That evening we held our first-ever Seder Feast - Passover Meal for about 20 brave souls willing to try something new. We held it upstairs by moving the pews to each side and setting up tables right down the middle, and how elegant the tables looked with white tablecloths, candelabra, china dishes and glass serving bowls. The meat of the evening was lamb and beef roasts, along with symbolic recipes for food. Such as salt water to dip the lettuce into reminding each one of the tears shed by the Hebrews in captivity in Egypt; horseradish symbolizing the hardships they suffered; haroseth - apples, walnuts, cinnamon and wine mixed together to symbolize the mortar used in making the brick buildings; and, the matzoh - cracker-like, unleavened bread that they only had time for as they hurriedly left Egypt before Pharaoh could change his mind again. Sparkling grape juice was used in place of wine for drinking. It was a fun evening and something we hope to do again next year. The altar was stripped before we left and the black paraments adorned the altar. Good Friday services were held at 8pm that told the story of Jesus being betrayed and led away to the cross for crucifixion. We all left the church in silence. Easter Sunday morning began with the Meyer family - Al, Pat, Courtney and Jason cooking a delicious breakfast for those who came. Many thanks to them. Services began with the altar being dressed with white paraments, and with the young people carrying in Easter lilies and flowers from the funeral to adorn the altar area while the congregation sang, "Jesus Christ Is Risen Today" accompanied by Tracy Gabryel on the organ. Confirmation students had made their own crosses, designed and put together by them and their families, which also were on display around the altar table and pulpit. Everything looked so beautiful with the flowers, crosses, children singing, organ playing, and all the people. A grand morning it was! Thank-you to everyone who had a part in making the most wonderful of all mornings so special. Christ is Risen! He is Risen Indeed! Howard and Bonnie Weber Synodically Authorized Ministers - ELCA St John's Lutheran Church Council meeting minutes for April 5,2011 Council Chairperson, Jason Meyer called the meeting to order. Attending were: Brian Bolstad, Al Meyer, Carol Bolstad, Jason Meyer, John Agen, Val Kulesa, Jessica Wisocky, Chris Peetz, Pastofs Howard and Bonnie Weber, and Eileen Sikora. Val made a motion to approve the agenda. Seconded by Al. Motion carried. Pastor Bonnie led devotions. John made a motion to accept the treasurer's report as printed. Seconded by Al. Motion carried. Val made a motion to accept the council minutes with the correction that Nina is not in a Nursing Home but in Assisted Living. Seconded by Chris. Motion carried. Old Blue Book A discussion of chapter three of the Blue book was held. This chapter dealt with the question, "What Does It Cost?". We also went over the article in The Lutheran. Next month we will discuss chapter 10 in the Blue Book. Handicap Accessibility The question came up, Is the reason people don't want to spend money on the Church because they feel the Church is dying? Building on rather than a chair lift to the basement was discussed. A chair lift will not meet codes. We need to find a contractor or someone that can give us some estimates. The handicap accessibility was tabled until the next meeting. Constitution We worked on the constitution, starting with chapter 12. Next meeting we will start with C 15:03. Thanks goes to Chris for typing the constitution for us. Other Letters to Inactive Sending letters to the inactive members was discussed. Pastor's gave us sample copies to look over. Meeting The next council meeting will be held May 1 following the Church service. Chris made a motion to adjourn. Seconded by Brian. Motion carried. The meeting was closed with the Lord's Prayer. Carol Bolstad, Secretary St. Johns Sunday School Newsletter Where has the time gone? I'm writing this as of Monday the 25th of April and we have 4 Sundays left of our Sunday School year. We have been very busy this past month. We have sung the past 3 Sundays during the Sunday Service. The children sang for the service when we recognized our seniors and the confirmands—they sang "I Am the Vine". On Palm Sunday we re-enacted Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem, we had the coats, the palm branches, the children sang "Pharoah, Pharoah" and "A Ride for the King". On Easter Sunday, some of the children were involved with bringing the lilies to the altar, and they sang "Shine Jesus Shine" to celebrate that Jesus had risen and of his triumphant win over the devil. The children are preparing for the final days of Sunday School, we have so much to do and so little time to do it in. We have our Annual Rewards Shopping to do and the end of year Sunday School Program and Sunday School Picnic to accomplish. There's Mother's Day in there too! Confirmation is May 1st, our 2 confirmands are Jewel Fredrickson and Amber Lodahl. They've met all the requirements including the presentation of the 10 Commandments to the congregation. The girls have worked hard between learning the Commandments—doing Commandment Classification. They understand making and breaking of the all of them, and how important the Commandments are to our spiritual health. In Sunday School the confirmation class has been working on Route 66, that is learning little things about the 66 books of the Bible. Route 66—66 books of the Bible, cute phrase. We will have the usual end of the year shopping, the program and the Sunday School picnic. The students will start preparing for the end of the year program—May 22nd. I'm going to try something different this year. I hope you enjoy it. Vacation Bible School will be 1 week earlier this year, so please make a note. August 4, 5, 6 & 7 are the dates. We received another balloon back from Rally Day, this time from Sheboygan, WI. That ends my letter for this month. There was no April Birthdays for the children, but we did get to wish Carol Bolstad a "Happy April Birthday". God Bless Everyone Monthly Trivia: Do you know there were 11 earthquakes mentioned in the New Testament? .the name Jesus is mentioned 1,281 times in the Bible. Question of the month: Who performed his first miracle after Jesus descended into Heaven? HINT: it's in the Book of Acts.
